Yesterday, in the greatest honour of my life, I was elected as a Dublin City Councillor by the wonderful people of Kimmage-Rathmines.
As I met with 1000's of Dubliners over the course of this campaign, I became more convinced of the need for change in our politics - a new...
For Irish readers: The US govt just burned all bondholders but saved hundreds of thousands of businesses and jobs in Silicon Valley Bank without indebting the entire country and multiple future generations, if youโre wondering how the Irish bank bailout could have been different.
So it turns out that in the middle of a climate crisis, the Irish EPA has granted licenses for several fossil-fuel-burning power plants to power data centres for the richest companies in the world. While the Greens are in government. With no carbon abatement requirements. Wtaf.
Taoisigh, Ministers, Attorneys General (one of whom is now a disgraced Supreme Court justice) from 2011 to today covered up an estimated โฌ12B State embezzlement of Irish pensioners. The policy is still in operation.
Stunning.
No question that the Commissioner and the Minister must resign tomorrow.
Complete breakdown in law and order because of underinvestment, poor management, an inaccurate threat assessment, and total incompetence. Handed the capital city to the far right tonight.
I am deeply shocked and appalled at the inhumane and violent treatment of a students union representative by

I was thrown out with excessive force from Nancy Pelosi's honorary doctorate of law

Most people don't realise this, but the more seats there are in your constituency, the more important it is to vote further down the ballot. Often the 6th or 7th seat in a local election is determined by a handful of votes because most don't bother to vote all the way down.
People are not sleeping on trolleys all over Europe. Hospitals are not far past their capacity all over Europe. Staff are not working 24 hour shifts and 7 days all over Europe. This is not a European phenomenon. It is a completely Irish disaster.

Hi everyone! My name is Eoin Hayes, and Iโm running for Dublin City Council in the Kimmage-Rathmines local electoral area, which includes Haroldโs Cross, Crumlin, Terenure, Rathgar, and parts of Drimnagh, Dartry, and Dolphinโs Barn.
Iโm running for Dublin City Council because...
Proof, if any was needed, that Fine Gael are not serious about solving the housing crisis.
If he doesnโt want to reduce house prices, that means he doesnโt want to massively ramp up housing supply through building more homes.
Very worrying for the locked out generation.
It really says something about the grace and strength of the political leadership Rรณisรญn and Catherine personify, when they're smiling at their own resignation surrounded by their parliamentary party. A different type of Irish politics, indeed.
A few months back, a good friend (American) was visiting Dublin for a day, so we decided to tour some the best food/drink/establishments in the city - here recorded for posterity: we started off in

The most shocking thing about Damien English is that heโs been a TD since 2002.
Imagine being that incompetent/corrupt and still keeping your job for 20 years and earning a platinum level pension?
@Noahpinion
That is definitely incorrect. The rate of destruction and loss of life vastly exceeds other conflicts - the kind of destruction only recently seen in places like Darfur and Kosovo.
The Labour Party and the Social Democrats 'have to be one again', former Labour leader says.
Howlin said there is no ideological difference between the two & although the Social Democrats are opposed to the idea currently, he believes "the day will come"
Varadkar has been in govt 12 years, his government just recorded a โฌ5B surplus, & our health service is at 110% its capacity (which he cut).
Cutting taxes and spending at the expense of peopleโs lives.
@alxwlsdn
The EU/ECB did not have *any* hand in the bank bailout. Was a purely Irish decision. What followed they should rightly be blamed for, but the core primary decision was Fianna Fรกil and the Greensโ alone.

Yeah I donโt buy that constitutional argument for a second and in any case could have been fought. Would be completely daft to suggest that the state has an obligation to bail out any write downs on assets on the basis of property law.

The Irish Presidency is the *only* directly-elected national office in the country. I think that entitles you to a political voice, perhaps even a primacy, regardless of the apolitical tradition some seem to be obsessed with.
Thatโs it. 15,000 doors. Thousands of conversations with voters. Several public events. A billion leaflets (joke). One election day.
Thank you to everyone who volunteered on my campaign and to the wonderful people in my community who were so engaged, welcoming and kind.

Calling all cyclists!
Are Dublinโs roads stopping you or your family from cycling more? We need urgent improvements to our roads to prevent another tragedy. I am passionate about having safe cycling infrastructure in Dublin and if elected on June 7th I aim to make that happen.

After a few seconds she said โI have two: 1 - all things, no matter how darkly you may feel, pass; 2 - bitterness only hurts one person - yourself - so itโs best to move on as quickly as you can.โ
Itโs worth noting and reflecting on how uncontroversial gender recognition was in Ireland in 2015, and how controversial it would be now 8 years later. Our media/political arena landscape has been utterly transformed in a decade and Iโm not convinced it was for the better.
Oscar: Professional Trans Person ๐ต๐ธ๐ณ๏ธโโง๏ธ
Ireland has had the same gender recognition system for the best part of a decade and the world hasnโt fallen apart.
Most Irish people didnโt even notice the (very long fought for) passing and implementation of the gender recognition act in 2015.
@Noahpinion
Yep thatโs old data - rate of killing has not gone down, though! Approx 10K children dead in 100 days, about 100 per day? What do you call that if not genocide?
People, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, deserve respect, dignity, and love. To all our trans and intersex friends and family, you are loved and such valuable members of our society ๐
The president-elect of TCD Studentsโ Union has spoken about the importance of trans visibility, describing it as "an act of defiance."ย Jenny Maguire was speaking on International Transgender Day of Visibility, an annual event dedicated to celebrating transgender people worldwide.
The one thing that really struck me was how friendly everyone was to him as an American (he was wearing a baseball cap). There was a great buzz everywhere we went too, but not too crazy crowded. Lucky to have such places in Dublin.

Today in climate-tech research: So it turns out that the *only* climate action project to get any funding from the EU's Innovation Fund in Ireland was won by a company owned by a Russian oligarch supporting the invasion of Ukraine. โฌ4.24 MILLION!
I don't particularly like speaking out about this but it needs to be acknowledged to be addressed.
And it is essential it is addressed if we want more people to go into politics.
TDs/Ministers/Taoisigh Leo Varadkar, Michael Martin, Paschal Donohue, Brendan Howlin, Michael McGrath, Stephen Donnelly, Simon Harris all implicated, as well as Supreme Court justice Sรฉamus Wolfe.

V sorry to hear about the passing of Niamh Bhreathnach, Minister for Education that removed tuition fees from Irish universities and opened them up to a generation of young people (before FF/FG hiked 'student contribution charges'). Pushed us forward as a society.
Again: in every other jurisdiction, the onus on reporting this information lies with Airbnb, not the owner. One is easy to enforce, the other is not. Law was intentionally designed to fail (written by FG).
Not a single homeowner using Airbnb or other short-term letting platforms complied with the obligation to provide Dublin City Council with details on how many nights they rented out their properties last year
A friend of mine in the US just had their savings interest rate put up to 3.9%. In Germany, retail banks are doing 3%+. National banks are absolutely screwing us.
Itโs basically like if Athloneโs population was this super exclusive and concentrated enclave of multimillionaires and billionaires and the rest of the country worked for them. Wild.

Good to hear traffic cameras will be coming to Dublin next year - so important to hold bad actors on our roads accountable for their actions.
I hear this request all the time from talking to residents in my area, especially cyclists.
I can tell you this is insanely widespread, in particular in deep-pocketed Dรกil candidates. One of the biggest disadvantages for those in smaller left wing parties. (And thereโs no enforcement!)
