I find it remarkable the lack of support those in prison get when they’re released. My mum has been out for 2 weeks, and with no support whatsoever, has began drinking and has spiralled, where before, thrived in a controlled space. We need to start talking about rehabilitation.

A friend of mine took his life yesterday. He served in Afghanistan, where he lost his best friends. He saw the lost lives of his friends, and his own efforts, as worthless. The government must address the service personnel who served so bravely in Afghanistan & show leadership.

Thinking about my 99 year old grandma today, who kissed goodbye to her fiancé at the docks in Liverpool in 1941, knowing that she might never see him again. He died 3 weeks later. The sacrifices made in the lifetime of our grandparents are unfathomable. We will remember them.

Nothing really prepares you for a parent going to jail. What’s clear to me however, is that my mum needs serious help and support - placed with the correct services, and given the right treatment. Instead, all we’ve been met with is a privatised system and facilitates reoffending
