No one is going to celebrate 3 years of Maara.
So here's an appreciation thread (with a few comparisons to Charlie) for the movie I'll always gatekeep - 🧵
In the DARK series, if you enter this cave, you can either go 33 years into the past or 33 years into the future. So, Gunaa released in 1991 and Manjummel Boys released in 2024. Okay bye 🏃🏾♀️
Revisiting the write-up I did for celebrating 15 years of Mozhi 💖🧵
When I was 12, I had this prodding question in my mind - Can we lead a happy life despite our flaws? And I received the answer from a beautiful Tamil movie. Mozhi, meaning 'language', is a poetic title.
Reached home safely 🙏🏽
Declare this as

No one should ever experience the nightmare I experienced. Ticked all the boxes of a survival thriller. 😤 That auto driver was my saviour. I'll forever be grateful to him. 🙏🏽
My favourite albums of 2023 - a thread 🧵
Ilaiyaraaja owns the album, but not to forget Yuvan's two lilting melodies, GVP's cheeky female-POV love song, and Sean Roldan's gaana & heartwarming love song. Ilaiyaraaja's instrumentals are otherworldly. Wholesome album!
Maara is an adaptation of Charlie, not a remake. The movie's got its own path with 2 story arcs. The smaller story arc of Vellaiyan & Meenakshi finds closure and gives completion to the bigger story arc of Maara & Paaru.
This will always be one of my comfort movies ❤️
Unlike Tessa, whose only aim is to find the man who rented the house before her, Paaru chases a story. She wants to find the person who painted the story that she thought only she knew. This gives the character a purpose and more screen space.
While Charlie dives directly into Tessa's life, Maara begins with an intriguing mythical story that serves as an allusion to Vellaiyan and Meenakshi's forlorn love story. This sets an aesthetic tone for the entire movie.
Then there is the undercurrent of love. While Pularikalo was placed earlier in Charlie & focused on a new beginning, Theeranadhi is all about the woman's journey whose destination is yet unknown. The placement of the song is perfect for Paaru's character arc.
I haven't met anyone else who loves Maara's album as much as me. It's my THE GO-TO ALBUM. The album's got everything in it to heal me, especially those two instrumental pieces. Oh Azhage & Kaathirundhen are the less-celebrated songs.
And then there is the happy ending of the fairytale story. If at all I loved a fairytale-like movie, Maara would be the one. Because it has as much soul as it has the concepts of destiny and miracles, enriched by aesthetics, vivid colours, art, lighting & landscapes.
The surreal event of finding and losing someone is said through a beautiful song. In the OG, Charlie always knows that Tessa is searching for him. It is a cat-and-mouse game schemed by him. Meanwhile, Maara is unaware that a woman is searching for him until the pre-climax.
This conversation between Maara and Kani has my whole heart. The warmth of seeing the world through a different lens after wanting to die is definitely something indescribable. Such delicate moments are what make Maara wholesome.
The most poignant scene from Maara's perspective. Since Charlie doesn't explore the story arc of the elderly people, the conversation between Charlie and Kani focuses only on Tessa. But in Maara, this scene heartwarmingly shows the hero's purpose of leading a vagabond life.
OMG, thank you very much, Shraddha ❤️❤️ I honestly didn't expect my thread to gather this group of people who all love Maara equally as much as I do 🥹💖 Made my day! 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Vidyasagar is the soul of the movie. The whole album is a gem. And the background score amplifies the emotions aptly. This is what I'd call as rich music.
Also, only a single bulb lights up when Karthik falls in love, but a whole chain of lights goes on when Archana does.
This movie taught me that we can lead a perfectly happy life by not treating our flaws as flaws, but by converting them into our biggest strengths. Mozhi begins with extraordinary beauty and inquisition and is then tossed into an emotional brilliance.

Dear
@arrahman
,
My little daughter has become a fan of Maanja Nee and wants to watch more video songs in which you appear. Now she's vibing to Jigu Jigu Rail. Please keep appearing in more music videos.
Thank you. 🙏🏽
16 years ago, it was Diwali on this day. I woke up, got dressed up, and switched on Sun Music to watch the new songs. This was the first one to be telecasted, the movie being a Deepavali release. Since then, it has been one of my soul songs. 💜

Kaathal - The Core moved me to tears. It deals with homosexuality with such subtlety and delicateness that you'd be overwhelmed with emotions by the end of the movie. Hats off to Mammootty for doing this role! 🫡 This will always be one of my favourite films (1/3).
The imperious, honest, and inquisitive Archana (played by Jyothika), is both adorable and feared. She considers her life to be just like any other human, despite being deaf-mute. She cherishes her talents - painting, crafts, and martial arts.

Karthik (played by Prithviraj), is not the usual misogynistic character we get to see in commercial potboilers. He admires Archana's talents and doesn't demean or dominate her or treat her disability as a burden. He wholeheartedly accepts her as she is.
The 13-year-old me laughed it off, but the 29-year-old me can't take it lightly. Radhamohan said in an interview with Ashameera Aiyappan that we evolve as society evolves and he'd never do anything like that again.
One day, in an emotional high, Karthik tells Archana that it’s a beautiful feeling to be able to imagine her voice through their usual gestural interactions. One look at his face, beaming with love, and you’d instantly know that his intentions are genuine.
@nightingale97_
Goddess, my foot! I was horrified at what just happened. What followed after was nothing short of a nightmare - sewing that episiotomy cut 😭 Can't even begin to recollect. I'm so one and done. Never going through it once again 😣 Goddess aam goddess 😏
I have watched many poetic movies, but Mozhi is the one poem I'd always revisit when I need to feel good. It's wholesome - love, friendship, comedy, sentiments, everything in the right quantity.
So that's it. I can now bend the fingertip 80%. Yet to find the grip or properly use the finger. No more surgeon follow-ups 🧿 And no more hand pictures 🥳
31 days since my injury. Flesh is grown, two layers of skin yet to grow. The nail side looks a bit scrambled. I can't bend the fingertip as there's no blood circulation 🥲 The surgeon has taught me an exercise and an antibiotic & ointment have been prescribed 😌

Hi, hi. So I'm writing a book that has three women, a time machine, an unfortunate plane, and the gemstone lapis lazuli. Bookmark this tweet too and please support me in 2025/2026 when I publish the book 😇
Professor Gnanaprakasam's backstory and his scenes with Karthik hype the emotional quotient of the movie. There's this bittersweet scene which has the right balance of sentiments and comedy in it. I use the comedy part as a reference sometimes irl.
Vanakkam all!

On the other hand, there's Karthik. Yes, he loves Archana, but he respects her and the friendship he shares with her. And he won my heart when he respected Archana's rejection and stayed away from her.
Just when I thought that Archana wouldn't have a change of heart, Karthik showed up with his pragmatism. In the pre-climax, he emotionally persuades Archana to live her life to the fullest. He is angry with her, but he wants her to have a clear vision of everything.
A film so unpopular, you think only YOU remember it.
What a trauma this movie was! 😭 But Ilaiyaraaja's Konjam Konjam and Ulagile Azhagi are my favourites 🫶🏾
But Archana isn't the one to take such humiliation light-heartedly. “If you have to please me or some part of your self by imagining a voice every single time I speak, you might as well not talk to me at all!” She slays and walks away like a warrior.
Though Viji (played by Prakash Raj), Karthik's friend, is mainly there to provide comic relief, his empathy and good-naturedness are something to laud about. Above all, he is a compassionate friend to Karthik.
Sheela (played by Swarnamalaya), Archana's friend, is another strong woman who looks up straight when she tells Karthik that she is a widow. She is that understanding, non-judgemental friend everyone needs.
Panic listening within the year-end has made me add this album to this list. I've been listening to it on a loop for the past two days and I'm truly dumbstruck by the versatile and poignant numbers. I'm keeping Side B for 2024 and I'm sure I'm gonna get addicted to it too.
Okay, this is gonna sound weird. In my high school, one girl told me I looked like Kamna. I brushed her off.
A decade later, a customer at my workplace told me that I looked like Deepika from one Jayam Ravi film. Turns out Kamna's name was Deepika in Idhaya Thirudan. 🤷🏿♀️
Quote with celebs you’ve been told you look like.
Because of my curly hair and somewhat wheatish complexion when I had been to Chennai at my cousin's place my uncle jokingly described I kinda resemble 90s Vijay.
Imagine this without the moustache and lot younger.
One haunting duet, one soulful duet, and one devotional song are all this album contains, but how splendid the compositions are! Ilaiyaraaja once again proves his mettle in this spellbinding soundtrack. I want to listen to more albums by him in 2024.
Few biting people <<<<< People who love this movie ❤️
Anyway, I wasn't telling Charlie is lesser. Charlie is wonderful in its own way. The comparisons are just plot differences & not a derision of the director's take.
No one is going to celebrate 3 years of Maara.
So here's an appreciation thread (with a few comparisons to Charlie) for the movie I'll always gatekeep - 🧵
5. Maaveeran (Tamil)
This movie was quite surprising! It exceeded my expectations with its slick writing and taut screenplay. A well-made blend of humour, fantasy, and socialism. Definitely a feather in the cap for Sivakarthikeyan.
What a dazzling soundtrack by A.R. Rahman! To give us a nostalgic, soul-stirring, 7+ minute song like Nenjame Nenjame in 2023 is truly a blessing. And then there is a reggae number, three terrific bangers, and two heartrending songs. A complete package!
Never expected this thread to reach so many people 😭🙏🏽 I was like, why bother with copying the write-up and editing relevant videos when no one's going to bother? But you all have shown so much love to this. The movie is so close to my heart. Thank you very much! 🥹❤️
So, the album of Delhi - 6 was released 15 years ago on this day. Here's a thread on how much I love Rehna Tu - 🧵
On my 1st listen, I thought Rehna Tu was a dreamy song. Repeated listening showed me that it ran deeper. It was a universe cocooned in 6 minutes & 51 seconds.
@ShraddhaSrinath
Thank you very much, Shraddha ❤️❤️ Your character breathed more life into the movie 💖 Yesterday I was stumped that no hashtags or posts were celebrating this beautiful movie. That's why I created this thread and boy, there are so many people now loving & celebrating it 😭❤️
Stayed away from listening to this all these years because I knew what it'd bring me - nostalgic sickness. And that's what happened as soon as I listened to it. My eyes welled up with tears.
I heard Song of Soul for the first time in 2007. (1/n) 🧵
What a song! Listening to

in the morning felt like a blessing. Listening to it in the evening while it rained felt like being in paradise. All hail

❤
Mozhi treats its women right except for Ananthakrishnan who keeps chiding his wife and treats her as if she is inferior to him. According to his character, it is justifiable, but it still could have been avoided.
Delve in the mushy-mushy romantic song

31 days since my injury. Flesh is grown, two layers of skin yet to grow. The nail side looks a bit scrambled. I can't bend the fingertip as there's no blood circulation 🥲 The surgeon has taught me an exercise and an antibiotic & ointment have been prescribed 😌
I was relieved to hear the hand surgeon say that the wound has healed a bit. Based on further reviews, flap surgery might be done if needed. I'm gonna go back to work and avail leave on review days. Hope I get to use this hand soon 🥹
As it is said, when we love something so much, we start noticing its flaws. Same is the case with Mozhi too. There's a scene where Ananthakrishnan is proposing to Preeti but Viji accidentally appears at the spot. He assumes that the former is gay and even derides & mocks him.
With a grandiose song like Veera Raja Veera, this album is a harbinger of classicality. Both versions of Chinnanjiru Nilave are heart-melting, and then there is the breezy Aga Naga in the voice of Shaktishree. Even the three short songs are brilliant!
Met with a mixie accident while preparing lunch. The injuries are a bit severe. I don't know how long it will take for me to come out of this shock & trauma. I'll not be much active here. Will be turning to poetry, music & books to keep me calm 🙏🏾❤️
