Junior colleagues approached me and asked how to deliver a strong 12-minute conference presentation.
I doubt that I can perfectly nail it down but here are some ideas for an empirical paper:
[please add to this thread if you find stuff missing or debatable]
New year, new job!
After 11 years abroad I'm returning home full-time as a professor and chair in comparative politics at the University of Münster.
Looking very much forward to a new academic chapter w. new colleagues!
It's conference time! I still see a lot of default stata figures. Default
@stata
figures are troublesome for so many reasons. I'm not saying you have to use my schemes, but think about alternatives. A short thread:
1/n (thread about a threat)

Joining Aarhus also marks the end of a psychological extremely burdening period of my career and after talking to many friends about it I decided to use this opportunity to share some points on my job market situation bc I do think it matters to share: (a thread)
@MarkusWagnerAT

I've been on holidays for four weeks now. I created an automatic email outlining that I will not read any emails or work on review requests in the meantime. As a result people started contacting me via facebook with work related things. We have an issue academia, big time.
I guess it is now official: the first day of my new appointment

Kai, shame on you but also: your tweet rejects itself. You suggest to

to reconsider his academic career because of his "ideological take" on what he experienced, not based on his qualities and merits as a researcher.
Think before you tweet such non-sense.
So
@MarkusWagnerAT
and I have this paper showing that the entrance of extreme parties legitimizes extreme positions. Given the development in Thuringia (Germany) we might need to write another paper on governmental entrances/support roles:
I have used a university credit card for the first time to pay for a conference. I didn't need to use my own savings, it didn't even touch my wallet.
I've been in this business for almost 10 years and always paid everything upfront with my own money - which is ridiculous!
In the German election study of 1961 54% of respondents agreed that national socialism was a "good idea but not well executed".
30% agreed with the statement "very strongly" and "strongly".

Yes, we published a null finding. We did it.
This is also the last paper out of my PhD studies I wanted to publish. That's it, no more working on old stuff.

Authors: Please stop putting tables, figures at the end of the manuscript. Even if journal suggests you should do that, ignore it. For reviewers this policy makes 0 sense!!!

There's a crisis of academic casualisation and precarity at the LSE. Insecure and short-term contracts are rife. We're social scientists, so we decided to research how serious the problem is. Here's a thread with our key findings, 28-page report + code repository.

In Saxony it currently looks like that all parties but the CDU, AfD, and the new party by Sarah Wagenknecht might drop out of parliament.

How I deal with stress:
- constantly reading non-academic books (this seems to be key for my well-being)
- sports (2-4 times a week; force yourself to go to your limits)
- no procrastination at work (if I can't focus, I leave the office)
- all weekends = work free
We should have a thread for academics with tips about how to deal with the stress/anxiety that comes with the profession.
Here are mine:
-Exercise
-Observance of one no work day (easy for me because I observe a Sabbath)
-Non-work audiobooks

, what about you?
Fascinating, yet also depressing finding: everyone believes to be in the middle...
Also reflected by how German politicians (=all very rich in the income distribution) themselves engage with their wealth in public.
Nice to see the Guardian is picking up our study on (biased) perceptions of inequality as well: German voters’ view of personal wealth causes problems for the left

It won't help if Europeans and their media point their fingers to the US. It's not like racism is absent in Europe. We might as well do something about it in our own backyard, no?
