This one is wild. He passes a bill that says, “street vending has been decriminalized and the Metropolitan Police Department is excluded from street vending enforcement,” and then proceeds to blame the police for not arresting them for selling stolen goods.
“Illegal vending is decriminalized right now.”
FACT ✅: The Council made vending without a license a civil penalty, consistent with all unlicensed business activity. It is still ILLEGAL to sell stolen items. It is up to the police whether they want to enforce the criminal law.

Councilmember
@BrianneKNadeau
spent the last three years demonizing cops and legislating away responsible policing, which contributed to a loss of 500 officers. Now that the result is rampant violence in her Ward, she demands the department provide *more* police. Shameful.
I want to express my condolences to family and friends of the victims in last night's shootings. The string of shootings over the last 2 weeks, incl. in Adams Morgan and U St. last night, is upsetting and devastating to our community. My statement/update:
The fact that
@charlesallen
can get away with this big of a flip-flop is insane. The reason we are short 500 cops is because of Allen’s efforts to reduce the size of MPD. Now he says, “we need more officers on the force.”
@tomsherwood
asks Allen if there's a crime crisis in DC. Allen: "We have crime at an unacceptable level, so that is a crisis."
Asked whether the city has enough officers, Allen says "We need more officers on the force," but says DC also needs more 911 calltakers, teachers, nurses

Moving the Caps & Wizards out of DC is the wrong decision for the teams & bad for our city. This summer, I sounded the alarm on the risk of overlooking Cap One Arena while chasing other priorities. This wasn’t inevitable. Full statement on MSE move 👇:

We received tons of positive feedback on our digital billboards. Many more to come helping educate residents on the impacts of
@charlesallen
and the unmitigated disaster created by his policies of protecting criminals and demonizing cops.
You are a highly unserious person. Until you accept blame for how we got here and repeal the CPJRAA from 2020, no amount of additional bureaucracy or window dressing will get us out of this.
Violent crime is occurring at levels not seen in the District since the early 2000s. We can and must do better to fight violence and protect our residents.
So today, along with 7 of my colleagues, I'm introducing the Evidence-Based Gun Violence Reduction & Prevention Act of 2023
-68 Arrests
-Dozens of weapons seized
-2 pipe bombs and a box of Molotov cocktails seized
-56 injured officers – 2 hospitalized
-Capitol Secured in less than 2 hours
-Hearings resumed
Maybe we can stop talking about "defunding police" now?
These brazen and traumatizing crimes cannot be tolerated. Students were ordered into cars during robberies so they can unlock their phones before being let go. Unfortunately, many of these incidents involve youth targeting other youth to steal items in their possession.
Four years ago we built a movement. I’m determined to follow through on the work we started.
Today I am proud to announce my campaign for re-election as Ward 4 councilmember. We’ve accomplished an enormous amount and have more left to do. I’m committed to doing that together.
The Council has had 3.5 years to undo their misguided pro-crime legislation passed in 2020, unfortunately, their hubris and their devotion to activists prevented them for doing the right thing.
Goodbye Caps & Wizards. Deal with Virginia being announced tomorrow morning at Potomac Yards (where celebratory announcement tents are being prepared now). A significant blow to DC and its ailing downtown. Sad part is, it could have been avoided if city had acted.
Washington, D.C. is number two on a list of U.S. areas hurting the most from retail theft, and the crime cost residents an average of $336 per person in 2021, according to a survey by Forbes Advisor.
"Officers are leaving faster than they can be replaced. We cannot find anybody to take this job. Unfortunately, there’s a direct correlation to the anti-police legislation that the D.C. Council has put forward."
We can confirm that three of our members have been shot by a suspect in the 5300 block of Hanna Place SE. The injuries appear to be non-life threatening and the members have been transported to area hospitals.
The groups who profit off the increase in crime just so happen to be the same groups advocating for fewer police and less accountability for criminals.
As violence rose in DC, so did the fight against it. Today DC spends $100+ million on 100+ plans, initiatives & programs. Who's in charge? What are you getting for your money? And why does an expert who helped build it says it's not working? Answers today on

Residents of the Truxton Circle-Mount Vernon area were treated to low flying helicopter sounds for nearly an hour last evening. Furthermore, there was racing vehicular noise through alleyways that followed. My question: What was the result of this public safety intervention?
Today at the Council, the Committee of the Whole voted to advance the Secure DC public safety legislation. Thanks to
@CMBrookePinto
for her collaborative approach on this bill. I want to highlight a few elements I strongly support that will improve accountability & make DC safer:
DC has reached 180 homicides for 2021. A 12% increase over last years 20% increase. We are on pace to break 200 homicides, a number not seen since 2003. We are short 100s of cops and the responsible policing that used to address this has been prohibited by misguided legislation.
This is an amazing exchange. Mendo slips that the bills are being rewritten by activists, but then acts coy when he realizes he’s caught.
Tomorrow’s vote will show which Councilmembers side with the activists, and which ones side with sanity.
Solitary confinement is psychological torture and ruins lives. Jails put people with mental health issues in solitary. Others for minor infractions. And DC uses it 3x the national average. That’s not only bad for them, it’s bad for public safety.
“Police are investigating after a preschooler was discovered suffering from a gunshot wound at a D.C. hospital. Investigators say she walked into the hospital alone.”
DC has reached 220 homicides for 2021. A 12% increase over last years 20% increase. These are numbers not seen since 2003. We are short 100s of cops and the responsible policing that used to address this has been prohibited by misguided legislation.
Today marks the the first time (that we can recall), where EVERY SINGLE crime category is showing an increase. Officer numbers continue to plummet under the misguided “reform” legislation passed by the Council. It is long overdue to begin repealing the CPJRAA.

Senate warns of increased crime on Capitol Hill as lawmakers and staff face string of robberies, carjackings
"In Washington, D.C., anti-police, soft-on-crime policies…endanger the public and empower criminal behavior."
One issue that is not rebuttable in the
@recallallen
discussion, is that for two+ years, Allen did everything he possibly could to drastically shrink the size and scope of MPD. He was very successful in doing so proven by our current 50-year low in staffing numbers.
Our office prosecutes juveniles and holds them accountable when they break the law. But prosecution takes place after a crime has already occurred.
To truly make the District safer, we must also work to stop crime from happening in the first place.
I’ve talked with 1D Commander Hall & neighbors about this unacceptable violence. Appears highly targeted, several injured, & all expected to survive. MPD responded quickly & investigating. I’ve also talked with witnesses who were inside. If you have relevant info, contact MPD.
Remember that time your advocacy led to a shortage of 500 cops, a 50-year record low, and then you blamed them for not being able to do their jobs the same? Thanks for checking in. Also, how’s your I-82 working out?
Hey
@DCPoliceUnion
, remember when NYC cops went on 'strike' by not doing their jobs in hopes it ruined the city? That was so crazy! Can you imagine if your cops were as craven, as disinterested in their mission, that they did the same? That would be insane!
I sincerely think it would be helpful if the union would make some concrete policy suggestions instead of just continually pointing out that crime is rising in DC.
Mass shooting at 6th and Longfellow NW. 6 people shot, 3 are deceased. We have lost 100s of cops and the DC Council has legislated away all of the responsible tools we had to prevent this. When will enough be enough?

I've heard a lot of questions, concerns, & misinfo about the Revised Criminal Code Act, so I wanted to provide some more info.
The RCCA brings our criminal code into the 21st century, advances equity and justice, and promotes public safety by ensuring that the law is clear.
After a four-year-old with a gunshot wound walked into a DC hospital *ALONE* yesterday, not a peep from anyone on

But our rights are only as good as they are known and protected. Here is a 🧵 on our worker rights in DC:
The Mayor’s veto of the Revised Criminal Code Act is a distraction and contributes to dangerous rhetoric. Today, we overrode it. Do not believe the hype: the Council is not tying the hands of law enforcement. Text of remarks at:
We applaud the news that the U.S. House of Representatives voted 229-189 in favor of H.J. Res. 42, a resolution disapproving the adoption of the most anti-police, pro-criminal legislation ever passed by DC Council.

Soap should be free to all who need it.
People aren't stealing soap for fun. They are stealing it because they, like all of us, want to and deserve to be clean.
How many bars of soap could 1 cops salary buy?
We’re 60 days in 2024 and we’ve had 27 homicides. Basically one every other day. This crime apologist and Allen acolyte thinks that just because we’re not hitting numbers from 2023 (the highest in 26 years), that everyone needs to stop talking about crime.
“You might think the these dangerous trends would force DC officials into a fundamental rethink of the city’s approach to crime. But, despite the sense of looming danger that’s enveloped the city, they seem intent on making things easier for criminals.”
With the shooting in NE, DC has reached 200 homicides for 2022. There have been 476 carjackings YTD (⬆️14%), and 2,057 robberies (⬆️2%).
