A little news!!!
I keep having conversations with people who, upon seeing headlines about the latest church scandals, both want to understand what's going on and, at the same time, are wrestling with whether they can still in good conscience stay in this institution. (1/3)
Matt Maher plays at Holy Hour in front of boxes containing 50,000 pages of evidence for Dorothy Day’s canonization cause. An official “send off” Mass will follow.
A friendly reminder that the bishop Trump is tweeting about is still "in hiding" after trying to take down Pope Francis in August 2018. He pops up every once in a while to publish conspiracy theories (like this letter) in right-wing Catholic publications:
This is huge: Pope Francis says he will appoint two women to the previously all-male Congregation for Bishops, which helps him choose the world’s bishops.
When a cardinal complained that a rise in Vatican salaries meant a particular usher earned as much as the cardinal, the pope remarked: "That usher has 10 children; I hope the cardinal doesn't."
#StJohnXXIII
Conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter was killed on this day in 1943 for refusing to serve in Hitler’s army, a decision he made because of his Catholic faith, although it alienated him and his family from other Catholics at the time.
A little news: I'm now an associate editor at
@americamag
! In this role, I'll be spending a lot more time writing and editing Vatican news and analysis, along with hosting
@InsdeVaticanPod
. Stay tuned and drop me story ideas if you have them!
USCCB shutting down CNS, paving the way for EWTN's CNA to become the only Catholic wire service covering US news, is reminiscent of when the US bishops' TV station closed down after being beaten out by EWTN. That decidedly changed the tone of US Catholic media, and this will too.
Reading through the McCarrick report, it's so frustrating how often lay people who raised concerns about him were straight-up ignored, as if only clerics could credibly say what was happening.
Vatican spokesman: Saturday's Mass at the Chaldean Cathedral of “Saint Joseph” in Baghdad will be the first time a pope has celebrated Mass in the Chaldean rite
Shoutout to all the Vatican journalists who just got awoken at 2:30 Rome time because some Italian hoaxer decided to start a rumor that Benedict XVI was dead
The Vatican was not happy with
@USCCB
's statement on Biden's inauguration.
"It is most unfortunate and is likely to create even greater divisions within the church in the United States,” one senior Vatican official told
@gerryorome
Vatican: Pope Francis was discharged from the hospital this morning. On his way home, he stopped to pray at the Salus Populi Romani icon for all those who are sick and in gratitude for a successful surgery.
The pope often visits the icon before and after trips abroad.
Family killed in the Texas mall shooting identified as Cindy Cho, Kyu Cho and their 3-year-old son, James Cho. Their other child, William, just turned 6 and is the only survivor. They were going to the mall to exchange clothes he received for his birthday
This is huge. Pope Francis appoints Bishop Fernandez head of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith—the Vatican's doctrine office, formerly known as the Inquisition. This will be a vital appointment for cementing Francis' reforms.🧵
New: Pope Francis thanks
@MikeOLoughlin
for his reporting on Catholics who cared for HIV/AIDS patients in the '80s and '90s "at great risk to their profession and reputation."
Pope Francis, meeting with a group of
@Deloitte
consultants today, doles out some Catholic Social Teaching, urging them to prioritize their impact on people and the environment above profits.
It's official: I'm writing a biography of Madeleine Delbrêl to be published by
@litpress
! I'm so excited to tell the story of the "French Dorothy Day" for an English-speaking audience 📚
I'd only seen the photo of Pope Francis and Ayatollah Sistani sitting together, but this one of them holding hands is so much warmer

While Pope Francis' meeting with John Kerry was about climate and not a comment on the "communion wars," I can't help but contrast this photo with the experience of growing up in St. Louis in 2004 when then-Archbishop Burke was waging that year's communion war against Kerry.
One of the first pages of Dorothy Day's FBI file. Later it warns she should be arrested in the event of a national emergency.
You can read the whole thing here:
Sr. Nathalie Becquart, the first woman to vote in the synod of bishops, gave a fascinating talk this morning, proposing synodality as the way for the church to move forward from any form of domination, including patriarchy.
From Pope Francis' Christmas Eve homily: "God was born in a manger so that you could be reborn in the very place where you thought you had hit rock bottom."
Today is the birthday of Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker Movement.
Her work continues today with her granddaughter, Martha Hennessy, who will be sentenced this week for entering and vandalizing a naval base in protest of nuclear weapons. (1/2)
Jean Vanier is credibly accused of sexual misconduct with six adult, non-disabled women, according to a new internal L'Arche report.
The report also details lies concerning how much Vanier knew about abuse allegations against his mentor, Thomas Philippe:
Three things:
1. There are a lot of cardinals in Rome this week for the World Meeting of Families
2. "A bishop or priest" giving a blessing in the Sistine Chapel or anywhere else is not "highly unusual"
3. Resignation rumors have been circling for weeks; they didn't just break.
After the protesters left, Capitol Police walked through the empty rotunda taking photos and examining the pictures of migrant children that were left on the ground.

Capital police officers are dismantling the human cross these Catholics made with their bodies on the Russell Rotunda floor during today’s

NEW: ‘I am honored that the Americans attack me,’ Francis says after receiving a book that describes how a wealthy and often traditionalist sector of the American Catholic church—both clerical and lay—attacks him.
"When the pope reached EWTN’s reporter and cameraman, one of them told him they were praying for him. He responded that maybe Mother Angelica, EWTN’s founder, is in heaven praying for him, but that they 'should stop speaking badly about me.'"
ROME, ITALY—Once a year, on Pentecost Sunday, rose petals are dropped from the oculus of the Pantheon while the “Veni Creator Spiritus” is chanted.
These pilgrims were blessed to see it, today!
@usccbp
I laugh off a lot of abuse from Catholics but the one that really stung was when I tried to join the third order Carmelites after praying about it for years. They found out I work with
@JamesMartinSJ
and took every opportunity to tell me how terrible they thought he was. I left.
It’s been confirmed that some, if not all, of these students attend a Catholic high school and were in DC for the

What they are doing is shameful, and so antithetical both to what our faith is about and what the pro-life movement should value.
Fr. Rutilio Grande struggled with his mental health throughout his life, receiving medical care in a clinic and support in his Jesuit community.
Cameron Bellm argues the church has a long way to go in following the example of those Jesuits:
For the church to be credible, Pope Francis said pastors need to "be free like Peter 'from fear, from calculations based solely on worldly concerns' and free like Paul 'from slavery to self' and 'from...the intransigent defense of tradition.'"
Fr. Radcliffe mentions a powerful testimony given in the synod: “Many of us wept when we heard of that young woman who committed suicide because she was bisexual and did not feel welcomed. I hope it changed us.”
BREAKING: Vatican doctrine office opens the door to blessing same-sex couples outside the context of the liturgy.
The new declaration follows up on its 2021 statement against blessing gay unions that said God "cannot and does not bless sin."

BREAKING: America Magazine, the publication of the Jesuits, the congregation of the Catholic Church that Brett Kavanaugh belongs to, has just called for the Kavanaugh nomination to be withdrawn.
“According to the email, a pregnant woman having a miscarriage was found late last month caught in the [razor] wire [in the Rio Grande], doubled over in pain.”
Just sit with that.
Officers working for Gov. Greg Abbott’s border security initiative have been ordered to push small children and nursing babies back into the Rio Grande and not to give water to asylum seekers even in extreme heat, according to an email from a DPS trooper.
George Horton of

, a character witness for Martha Hennessy, says at her sentencing "I heard more about the Catholic faith in that courtroom [when Martha and

were on trial] than I have in any church in my life."
People are saying all kinds of rude things about me because of the info I published on how the CDF doc was written. Turns out I'm both a liberal spinmaster and a gay-hating pope apologist at the same time.
I never offered a take on the info. If you need that, here it is:(thread)
So these are the plans for the Swiss Guard's barracks renovation... I'm gonna need Architectural Digest to do a house tour when this is done.
(Also see if you can spot the hidden Pope Francis in one of these pictures)
Cardinals Cupich and Tobin are now the pope's point men when it comes to choosing American bishops. Having the two "Francis cardinals" in this role could shift the U.S. bishops towards Francis' vision...or it could deepen existing divides.

From Francis' address to the synod today: "The people of God, the holy faithful people of God, continue on with patience and humility, enduring the contempt, mistreatment, and marginalization from institutionalized clericalism."
Happy 90th Birthday to Jean Vanier,
@larcheintl
founder, who teaches us that being fully human does not mean climbing up the ladder of power and wealth, but climbing down it, meeting and loving others in our shared vulnerability and weakness.

@InsdeVaticanPod
: The Vatican's statement on gay unions was drafted by a much smaller group of people than would ordinarily write a doc like this, and it passed Pope Francis' desk so quickly that the Vatican hesitated to say he approved it.
75 years ago today, Cardinal Ritter gently informed the faithful of our archdiocese that if they refused to integrate their parishes, they could consider themselves excommunicated.
Vatican says Pope Francis will consecrate Russia and Ukraine to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on Friday, March 25 and that the same will be done in

by Cardinal Krajweski, the papal almoner.
Vatican press conference: The continental phase (the next phase of the synod) will not just be a set of discussions among the bishops; there will also be lay people involved in the meetings, with attention to including people from marginalized groups in the church and society.
Stepped into a church for the first time in three months. Kind of jarring to see caution tape blocking off 2 of every 3 pews—also, my mask doesn’t fit so well when I bow my head
Still, it was good to be back
New Orleans’ oldest independent bookstore, the Catholic Book Store on Carrollton, closes its doors today after some 85 years.
Here’s my haul from the liquidation sale. All books 75% off, gifts 50% off, open til 5 p.m.
A pleasure to talk with Anglican Bishop Jo Bailey Wells about her presentation on women’s ordination to Pope Francis and his advisors.
“It didn’t feel terribly radical inside the room. It only has felt radical in terms of some of the reactions.”
Another detail worth mentioning: no Catholic clergy participated in the clergy march the day after the rally. So Eric Martin, a lay Catholic grad student, borrowed a stole from another minister and joined in. He’s the one in cargo shorts on the right.
1. As we mark the 2-year anniversary of the tragic events in Charlottesville, Virginia, a quick reminder: although it was oddly under-covered, a sizable number of the counter-protesters staring down white supremacists that day were clergy.
