I think some schools tend to grab more older folks than not, but nationally just 5.5% of students are 28 or older at matriculation
Another fascinating way ChatGPT can be used for USMLE studying... ?s often test 4-5 similar diagnoses, ask the AI to summarize how each is different based on the exact question vignette you tell it:

@tessajoliver
This also has me reflecting that medschools as a whole completely ignored/missed out on properly adapting to the modern age of meded. Sketchy is a decade old at this point, NBME et al are just now responding to it.
So general surgery went up to 15 signals for 24-25. A little disappointing considering how little data we get from programs on what they consider a competitive applicant.

ChatGPT can generate visual mnemonic scenes for you. I am stunned at how good they are. Imagine how easy it would be to illustrate this yourself or with help of AI image gen?

Second all of this thread!! Very validating. Isn't it funny how most med school curriculums get in the way of these things? Would have loved to have been learning like I have in dedicated the entire time.
One of my favorite things about taking a research year in med school has been the opportunity to teach preclinical med students and undergrads. Can't wait to teach as a resident and beyond.
One of the best parts about being a student
@URochester_SMD
, is all of the faculty who have no problem investing in your future, in EVERY field. A joy it is to learn here.
My exact words seeing GPT in action for the first time Dr. Ryan. Here's another way I've been using it...I asked it help explain the clinical sig of plateau pressure using a board style question.
my biggest contribution to patient care so far in MS3 has probably been putting in tickets to IT to replace keyboards and mice on EMR workstations that are way past death already
Seeing a patient start to respond and follow commands again following a long recovery from TBI is something truly magical. What a privilege it is to do this work. This feeling never gets old.
@razzz_med
Same here!! It’s deceptively deep 🫠 I’m in that awkward half-learned state where I know enough to convince myself I’m correct but am really even more incorrect
calcium is deceptively complex and touches an obscene amount of systems/pathology, feel like we could have had an entire day of lecture on it.

I spoke with a mother of a son with a difficult congenital condition. I learned she works with her home hosp pall care team to help families of other children with the same diagnosis. Humanity is beautiful, and may we never forget the people who give and pay it forward.
Finishing up another week of interviews for
@URochester_SMD
, always so so impressed by the applicants and their exploits. The future of medicine will be in good hands.
So excited for
#ASC2024
. Abstracts were accepted! Excited to present on trauma/SDH and cheer on one of
@EclipseLabAtUR
's excellent undergrads who I worked with on the ChatGPT study!!!
My most used tool by far after 5 months of surgery/medicine is a flashlight. Used daily. Protects patients from being annoyed at 5am. Bedside procedures way better, dressing changes, wound inspection, etc.
If you have the option, highly recommend doing a transplant elective into a SICU elective...getting to follow patients from pre-transplant to the OR to their ICU stay and recovery is a supreme gift.
Inspired by a post I saw today(sorry couldn’t find it again haha): the number of GS programs (red), and total in the signal region (blue).

Anyone who has ever told stories similar to
@thenocturnists
,
@TheMoth
what would you tell those preparing their own? I'm planning our second annual story telling hour at
@URochester_SMD
and helping folks prep to share their stories! any tips?
Grateful to have holidays off but I also feel a bit of FOMO from not being able to follow with my patients from last week/being worried about them. Anyone else get this?
So thankful to be at
@URochester_SMD
, just finished 2 weeks on ethics service. Above everything else, it is great to be a learner in a place where folks truly care about the mission and people they serve.
It's personal. It affects us all. How can we keep acting as if it doesn't? I lived in Texas for 8 years, and know first or second hand people affected by almost all of these tragedies. This is not the world I want to leave for our kids.
finishing child/adolescent psych clerkship today, will miss it. I think surgery and psychiatry are closer in valence than most people think. Both 'maximally invasive', face to face with patient, nothing in between. One more structured, one less.
@KaitlynSchiess
Finding this applies pretty well to medicine/doctors too. More similarities between ministry and medicine than many (in either field) would readily admit!
I love McDonalds coffee. Why? At 5 am there is nowhere to get a fresh cup of coffee in the hospital except at the McDonalds across the street. Pretty dependable as far as coffee goes.
@ani_cdotes
@trpender
I think its because there has never been the "market environment" so to speak around maximizing your step2 score like there was around step1. I expect that to change, as the metagame changes around residency apps. This is the very first year of that change.
@ButsonCarter
@ashtonsamos
start uworld/amboss ASAP. no sense in waiting, there are so many questions and the explanations are such high quality. Amboss can be had for much cheaper if you throw together a discounted group order (I think I paid $120~~?)
