As a resident I once joined a Code Blue resuscitation without donning appropriate PPE
Blood sprayed into my unprotected eye.
The next 3 months were a nightmare
Do not join a resuscitation until you have donned appropriate PPE
The drama on a

ー19 inpatient service is intense, frequent, & cuts like a knife.
Two extremes from the past few days.
Let’s round together...
Put on your PPE, I use a CAPR helmet, some people prefer or only have access to N95 & face shield. We’re lucky.

My son was 100% formula fed. Breast feeding was not an option for our family.
I am watching the formula shortage crisis unfold with a sick feeling.
If you’re price-gouging formula, I hope you get caught.
If you’re leveraging this shortage to promote breast feeding, STOP IT!
One day the bards will sing of how a cancer/sudden cardiac death-surviving comedian/ophthalmologist blew up a nefarious money grab from academic publishers using homemade video
I go to sleep at night hoping that when I wake up President Zelensky is still alive & leading.
Few people have ever galvanized the attention & respect of so many, so quickly.
He has inspired me.

Now more than ever, PLEASE stop using the word “elective” when discussing medically necessary, time-sensitive surgical procedures.
Theres nothing elective about them & the lack of urgency that word implies sends the wrong message.

today as a reaffirmation of my commitment to reduce gun violence in America
Someday, my son will ask me what I did to help stop the epidemic of gun violence. It’s important I have an answer I can feel proud of
#GunViolenceAwarenessMonth
Today on National Gun Violence Awareness Day, we
#WearOrange
to call attention to our nation’s gun violence crisis that steals more than 43,000 lives and wounds 76,000 more every year, because an America free from gun violence is worth fighting for.
Why do you

Please avoid infantilizing language when referring to interns.
They are intelligent, hard-working, highly motivated adults.
Just like you and I were when we were interns.

Thankful to be doing this work on this day.
Feels very meaningful & certainly memorable!
To all HCWs, First Responders, & essential workers out there today, much respect for doing what you do.
We are trying to bring you in the building, into the room.
To share with you. To reinforce the desperation when it comes to the hospital & Covid
To reinforce the right behaviors & help change the wrong ones outside the hospital.

Female doctors make $2 million less over a 40-year career than their male counterparts, new research estimates. More men become surgeons and women have been shown to spend more time with their patients, leading to fewer services that can be billed for.
To those taking shots at doctors & HCWs struggling to care for those in their cities/regions: Understand we are all watching. We all talk to each other
The regions that treat us w/ disdain will have a hard time recruiting soon. We get to choose.
Open season on doctors is over
If you think 24h shifts in medical training are good b/c they give you insight into what being an attending in a given speciality is like, you should also ask why are attendings working 24 hour (& longer) shifts?
It is clear to me the list of healthcare workers who are also artists continues to grow.
Your creativity & skill makes me smile!
Please reply if you’re a healthcare worker with some art to share so I can retweet!
US employers cut 140,000 jobs in December, according to the latest jobs report. Women accounted for all the losses, losing 156,000 jobs, while men gained 16,000.

Didn’t happen
I felt sick. I stayed home.
Under normal circumstances, of course I’d have gone to work. These are not normal circumstances.
We are already learning lessons, don’t be a cowboy.

I saw something today that I really wish I hadn’t.
Struggling to process it while acknowledging I may not ever forget it.

It’s ok if you’ve had enough. It’s a lot. Be sure to carefully clean your CAPR & wash your hands.
I’m ok at the time, but reflecting after the fact on this juxtaposition is hard.
Tears. Prayers. Covid in both cases
Two totally different outcomes.

(1,23) Earlier today, the jury rendered a verdict. I am now free to write about how I feel and the impact of this trial on me. The first and most important thing to say is that the only victims coming out of this trial are Jaime Guttenberg, Alex Schachter, Joaquin Oliver, Alyssa

Hi, I’m a doctor in a movie. I’m very abrupt when talking to patients and generally am rude to their families. Frequently I will make decisions that make real doctors lose their minds. I drive a sports car and have an obvious personality disorder.

South Africa is in my blood, my parents are from there.
For me, there is tremendous pride not just in how quickly SA scientists turned this data around, but in their transparency releasing to the world knowing the reaction would be harsh.
There is much good in this world
If you’re a physician in America and you’re not engaged in the work towards increased firearm safety, you need to ask yourself some hard questions tonight
Doctors everywhere, but especially in states like Tennessee and South Carolina, are told not to talk about gun violence because it is “too political”.
AND THEN THEY GET SHOT AT WORK.
When a medical student, resident, or fellow dies by suicide, what follows at institutional level?
Is there an investigation?
Is there accountability or changes made?
Does
@acgme
have a process?
It would be helpful to know & share findings & interventions.
This must get better.

Honestly I feel a bit nervous even though not my first go-around. I am heartened by the courage so many of you display every day.
Will share a bit of what I see along the way.
Please don’t say/write “gun control”
That term is a gun lobby creation from 1990s & Dickey Amendment to foment fear & create a false narrative around firearm injury research. When you use it, you’ve lost argument
We seek gun safety legislation & gun violence risk reduction

Given the extraordinary nature of what everyone is dealing with, I might suggest now is a time to think about some guidelines re: tweeting about the passing of a medical student, physician, or other healthcare professional.
Thanks for considering this.
-Volunteerism is important but isn’t a default setting
-Know your Fair Market Value
-Ask for help
-Read good books
-Step into tension

When a society is hit w/ a cataclysm, it adapts. It doesn’t go back to how things were “normal” before
Promoting a uniform idea of “normal” now is a barrier to progress
I aspire to be part of a society that adapts & improves, even though it’s uncertain exactly how & it’s hard.
For those who don’t agree that the vaccinated can return to pre-pandemic normal, I ask: What should we all do? Perpetual masking? Forever not dining out, avoiding large weddings & indoor gatherings, etc? Virtually everything has risk, and zero covid is not a viable strategy.
Feeling motivated friends. Feeling motivated.
