American elites are now cosplaying foreign wars. They want all the emotional thrill & life purpose that can come from conflict, but without the slightest bit of discomfort, much less, you know, the real risk of being killed. It’s a moral simulacrum as rendered by failed…

Removing mirrors alone is not a huge thing, but the locking down of public and semi-public spaces do to deviant behavior of a few is such a nasty trajectory

Funny thing, and rarely mentioned, is how damn white NPR listener base is. White, educated, and completely out of touch with normie minorities who they treat like weird distant things to worry over.

Some white people may choose πŸ‘ because it feels neutral β€” but some academics argue opting out of πŸ‘πŸ» signals a lack of awareness about white privilege, akin to society associating whiteness with being raceless.

Man. Downtown San Antonio on a Sunday night is dystopian. Everything closed, clusters of mentally ill, addicted, and desperate wandering empty streets. It’s made worse by being ringed by an elevated expressway, which makes it feel like an empty concrete battlefield

It's weird how young people outside of the fancier neighborhoods in the US, including in some pretty desperate parts of the world, are pretty well adjusted, social, and able to do normal human things like make small talk, despite being far closer to tragic and violent stuff.

My rules of travel 1) pack absurdly light 2) never change money at airport beyond bus fare 3) no hotels. Rent cheap apartment near transport hub 4) walk across town 1st day to learn 5) ride busses often, take cabs rarely 6) become regular at a few places 7) watch & follow

Bills new stadium, largely paid by taxpayers, is depressing as hell. NFL & owners, awash in cash, use an intentional scarcity (only 32 teams!) to squeeze cities. I will take away one of the things that makes this town proud, unless you pay up. It is a classic monopoly & sucks

One thing painfully clear from my last few months of walking, talking, & then hanging with people in bars/restaurants/churches/etc is how hard the ban on social gatherings has been on people. Most people deeply need physical & organic community.

I want to think Putin has miscalculated so badly he will be deposed in a coup, or power struggle, or palace revolt. In a month, year, or two There is something so ruthlessly off about this whole thing, if that doesn’t happen, then I have misjudged our capacity for selfish evil

I’ve spent a lot of time around hard drug users, helping them. You don’t want to do anything to increase their paranoia, which can tip into mania in a second. Public transport requires everyone be on their best behavior to work, and shooting up isn’t anyone’s best behavior.

@esaagar I spent 7 years documenting homelessness and poverty, all over the country, and that didn't prepare me for LA. It shocked me. The most depressing image I saw was an expensive gated adult club (with BMW's in the parking lot), with tents along one side of its walls.
