I'm moving to Oxford (for a bit!) Incredibly excited to have been selected as an
@risj_oxford
fellow and get started on a big research project, looking into how the media reports on missing people
#BlackLivesMatter
protest today in Peckham, South East London - led by young, mainly black people. Upcoming protests also happening tomorrow and 7 June on central London
The whole thing was a mess.
1. They asked us to put "ethnic" fabric behind us for the Zoom
2. They put up a picture of Munya when teasing the introduction of "the author"
3. They didn't brief Kay on the pronunciation of Timi's surname, which was butchered
4. "Is Britain racist?"
Is Britain a racist country?
Author
@CharlieBCuff
says it's "unusual, if not impossible" to grow up in this country without being touched by racism.

One of my friends and good pals sister, Alice Byrne, has gone missing in Edinburgh, Portobello. She's vulnerable and hasn't been seen or heard from since New Year's Eve – please please share, especially if you have any Edinburgh connections!
I've worked as a caterer at dinners like this. Once I remember Boris Johnson saying something about "peasants" and everyone at the table laughed. They were awful to the waitresses and so comfortable in their power. This is petrifying but unsurprising.
WATCH: Conservative MP Mark Field shoves a protestor against a pillar then grabs her by her neck and shoves her out of the Mansion House dinner after climate change protestors interrupted the banquet.
Today is Windrush Day - and let's be clear, we should refuse to let the Tory government, who co-opted the creation of this day for their own sinister means, get away with their continued despicable treatment of black British Caribbean people. Celebrate but don't forget.
BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS / CULTURAL MOMENTS THREAD: This is truly a beautiful time of the year for Black British creativity. Much of it for us, by us. Do engage with this, share it, go to the events, buy the books, support all the years of hard work! 🧵
Did date night in quarantine after we discovered we have a sunny roof and if I say so myself it was lit ☀️ & yeah I printed the menu and everything cause I'm a big cringe ♥️
Finally here! I've written a longread on racist teens on TikTok – it's a twisted story which raises questions about the infiltration of right wing ideologies & the lack of education around race, but most importantly, gives a voice to some very wise teens
After what can only be described as a horrific year for black families in the UK and beyond, there is now a deportation flight to Jamaica planned for early December. There are things we can do to stop this travesty. PLEASE SHARE & USE THIS AS A RESOURCE
After Richard Okorogheye’s death, we must stop making missing people a comparative sport | I wrote about the worrying way in which we talk online about missing person's cases and remembering Richard's humanity
A real privilege to be able to write this essay about Claudia Jones and the inception of Notting Hill Carnival for my first
@nytimes
byline!
“Jones brought her iteration of Carnival to London in another time when people desperately needed it.”
“I always wanted a large friendship group, until 2022 when I realised they don't cure loneliness”
In my final piece of 2022, I wrote about the realisation that large groups are rarely what they seem, and might not be able to give you what you need 🫶🏾

Once again there is no category for lactic acid nor wingspan. By making this about racism you are simply wrong and disingenuous. It’s not a card you can play to get your way. People genuinely suffer from racism everyday, you do them a huge disservice by throwing that around here
After two years as EIC and six years in total, I’m saying goodbye to my role

Caster Semenya: The two-time Olympic champion says the drugs made her feel "constantly sick" and have "unknown health consequences".
"I will not allow the IAAF to use me and my body again," said Semenya.

Due to Covid-19, we're working at really reduced capacity
@galdemzine
in terms of editorial. Please bear with us on content & email replies, we're working hard to publish meaningfully around

, but it will take time. And, as black editors, we're hurting too.
Very proud and humbled to be heading up
@galdemzine

@livlittle

We were expecting some "challenging” questions but this was very rogue and unrelated to the conversation we were having. A reminder on picking and choosing broadcast segments carefully.
Attended the vigil this eve; saw how the police behaved which was roundly despicable. The Sisters were incredible – leading the chants even as their own were seemingly being dragged away.
The freelance bite has well and truly hit. I'm owed so much money right now and there is so little in the coffers. I don't understand why there isn't some kind of regulated overall system for paying freelancers? Surely it would benefit everyone?
Bringing me back to when my (way too tight) cap pinged up and split into pieces over my locs as a kid after having been pulled over one too many times.
NEW: Swimming hats for Afro hair have been barred from the Olympics as official body says elite athletes 'never used, neither require to use, caps of such size'
Seeing as support is being offered to so many black journalists right now lol, a good time to mention that I'm in need of a new formalised mentor - ideally a woman who is in a senior editorial management position at a UK publication who has a good understanding of race issues ♥️
Lol nope. Absolutely had enough of this argument. If you can’t find a job in journalism which aligns with the majority of your morals you shouldn’t be working in it IMO.
Naomi Hersi was a black trans woman who was murdered this week and then misgendered by the press. Spoke to a friend of hers who said that she “was one of the most caring people I have ever met” and “loved the colour yellow”. This was the last thing she shared to her Twitter TL

film is coming out today and let me tell you, this gave me ALL the feels. It brought to life a mostly joyful part of black culture that I thought I would only ever get to read about, with Janet Kay's ‘Silly Games’ an incomparable soundtrack. Watch it

We're developing a beautiful photo essay at the

on British-Pakistani families living in multi-generational households (3+). Exploring the impact this can have on personal identity. We're looking for one more family outside of London to participate! Please RT / DM 🙏🏽
Something helpful: if any students who didn't get the A Level grades they needed for uni & are interested in journalism want to hop on a Zoom for a chat to talk about the industry, drop me a DM!
This year is the 70th anniversary of Windrush, when people from the Caribbean were BEGGED to come to this country and support the infrastructure post-war. And this is how they’re treated, so many years down the line. Disgraceful
Thread: African & Caribbean elders being treated in a disgusting manner by the home office. Many of whom came over with parents and some when they were British citizens. This is a national disgrace.
New journos: because I have learnt this the hard way on a few occasions in the past and it continues to crop up during editing – do not promise copy approval to your interviewees!
Fascinating that less than two years after giving up my time for a long phone call about diversity in the media, this is how the Society of Editors decides to behave. Needless to say, I didn't ever hear anything from them ever again after this email!
Don't have many words, but needless to say I'm a little heartbroken today. My thoughts are with the team navigating the closure and loss of jobs.
Thankful to have been part of this, and to have worked with so many people on their first steps into the creative industries ♥️
We are incredibly sad to announce that gal-dem is closing.
Several factors that have contributed to this difficult decision, including numerous challenges with running a small, mission-driven, independent media company. We’ve shared more here
Jesus Christ, Alexandra Shulman on Adwoa Aboah’s Vogue cover is a petrifying indication of the fetishisation of mixed race people. What a mess of an interview: “She’s the perfect mixture of mixed race, sort of posh Notting Hill royalty.”

Are these the worst council housing conditions in Britain?
These are some of the appalling conditions ITV News found people living in at a London tower block. Residents' repeated calls to the council for repairs were ignored.
More from
@DanielHewittITV
:
I cannot stress this enough, but FUCK the Daily Mail and fuck all of the people on my TL who STILL think it's acceptable to work there. This is the headline they choose to go with having, like most papers, ignored Joy's case for months?
Just been robbed in front of a bunch of people (I'm fine) and let me tell you, I will NEVER understand why people don't ask/support others if they're okay after something bad happens to them publicly
Just FYI writers I have a small commissioning budget for

cover story!
This was such a special story to take on, and the way the actors spoke about their bond and Chadwick Boseman was both heartbreaking and beautiful.
Don't know if you know but I work with some actual bosses
@galdemzine
. This is
@livlittle
's response to a white guy who YET AGAIN is mining us for quotes/sources when really (like some white journalists I know do, kudos) he should be pushing for us to be writing these pieces
This. I've BEEN writing profiles. I can do a great job. I love profiling black people. But you can also ask me to write profiles about non-black people. I honestly can't remember the last time that happened!
@TeenVogue
People have been shouting about the success of Teen Vogue for a good year, and now they're closing the print pub? It just seems to totally undermine the work they do. Even "social first" pubs like VICE have kept their print mag going

A bittersweet moment at

Very interested in how the reaction to the Met's behaviour from prominent politicians and media figures differs from BLM protests last summer. The demographic of the vigil was v white and, from what I could tell v MC
There will be a vigil held for Sabina Nessa, supported by
@ReclaimTS
, this Friday evening (25th Sept) at Peglar Square, Kidbrooke Village — starting from 7pm. The closest train is Kidbrooke Station, southeastern lines.
I wrote about why
@amolrajanBBC

speech will be played in full for the first time on radio
Highly, highly confused as to why
@TeenVogue
is closing its print pub while keeping BRIDES open. The prolificacy of zines amongst teens / young people surely shows that there's a market for print pubs there?
Not long after Grenfell fire I had the honour of speaking to some of the friends of Khadija Saye. Her art still deserves to be celebrated. "She put her heart and soul into every piece of work she made. She forms the most wonderful connections with people."
Just three months ago, at the height of the pandemic, the govt tried to hide a new, scathing report which goes some way to uncover just how corrupt (and racist) the Home Office is.
UPDATE: Alice Byrne is still missing but the time she was last seen is now 10am on 1/1/22, leaving a party on Marlborough Street, Portobello, Edinburgh.
She was wearing a black t and jeans.
Please continue to share, thank you.
What a nasty piece of work and what a way to attempt to shut down a debate that she has unecessarily and cruelly waded into. Talk of categories only further proves that this decision is was will always be steeped in misogynoir and explicit racism - there was no category for t
@paulajradcliffe
Paula, I believe you do not understand what constitutes racism and should not be telling other women, ESPECIALLY black women + black women with intersex traits how they should feel about this. Racism and misogynoir permeates almost every corner of our lives
Treated myself for a lil solo birthday meal (it's tomorrow). One of the few nice things about lockdown has been getting more comfortable with my own company 🥂
So excited to share the cover of Black Joy with the world!!! The beautiful illustration was done by Camilla Sucre. Big up
