At 13 I went into care. At 16 I was kicked out of care & went back to an unstable situation. At 18 I studied law at uni. At 25 I was called to the Bar. At 26 I secured Pupillage. In interviews, I took pride in who I am & where I come from. It’s what formed the advocate within me.
There’s no one face of someone who’s spent time in foster care, just like there’s no one face of the legal profession (or any other career). This
#CareDay24
I want to challenge assumptions of both and celebrate how different life experiences enrich us all. Happy Care Day 😘
26.04.24 - the day I married the man who taught me how to be loved 💍
Before you, I thought love meant slammed doors, breadcrumbs or silent treatment. With you, I learned that love is daily & love is gentle.
I finally know what family is. I know what home is. I belong ❤️
Being from foster care, Christmas was a v tough time, with constant reminders that I didn’t belong. I spent Christmas Day at uni sofa surfing at my friend’s parents
It was hard but 10 years on I’ve created the family I always wanted. I finally belong
It will get better

❤️
10 years ago (aged 17) I was facing an internal war I didn’t think I’d win. I’d left foster care & had nothing. I felt that no one would ever love me.
Fast-forward 10 years & I get to wake up every single day next to my beautiful son & fiancé smiling at me.
It will pass🙏🏼
#NCLW
Hello Twittersphere, I’m Lucy👋🏽 I’m a Future Pupil Barrister from a
#CareExperienced
background. It has not been an easy road to get here, but I’m proud of it. I now want to raise awareness for
#CEP
, help dissolve the stigma & advocate for ways the system needs to change! ⚖️
Being care-experienced, I found
#MothersDay
quite tough. I used to write myself cards & stayed off social media.
Becoming a mum myself helped me heal. Beyond anything I’ve achieved, learning healthy love & becoming the parent I never had for my son is by far my greatest one ❤️
🥹So this is what I’ve been working on…
SO proud to be Co-Founder & Director of Lawyers Who Care, the UK’s first org to offer long-term mentoring & paid work exp in law for
#CEP
. Leading alongside
@mediate_kate
&
@gemmacreamer
has been an honour.
I think one of the subtler ways
#CareExperienced
people can be stigmatised is via pity. I’ve experienced it before (in my profession too).
Pity isn’t compassion. It’s a voice of prejudice involving looking down on someone.
We are your equals, please engage with us as such 🙏🏼
I turned 27 yesterday 🎉
Birthdays were tough for me growing up in a dysfunctional home & in care. I never felt I had a family. However, I have since created my own & I am so blessed to be with my fiancé & son. It’s because of my background that I never take family for granted❤️
Haven’t seen
#teensincare
yet, but saying Care Leavers are “set up for failure” doesn’t sit right with me. Do we want Care Leavers thinking this way? It isn’t a positive message. The system needs serious reform, but
#CEP
can do amazing things despite it.
An honour to be on
@BBCWomansHour

#CEP
in higher education.
Really important to me to challenge the stigmas and narratives surrounding

If anyone in my network is thinking of a career at the Bar & is from a disadvantaged background, please DM me if you’d like help with your scholarship application.
My scholarship meant that I could pay for Bar fees (I otherwise couldn’t). It’s a really important opportunity
Applications for Bar Course scholarships at the four Inns of Court are now open. Check the scholarships pages of the four Inns for information on their specific procedures and start applying! Check our LinkedIn post for recommended resources!

I think we can shed light on the discrimination & disadvantage faced by
#CareExperienced
young people without imbedding a sense of helplessness. We can address the issues whilst seeing our potential & strengths.
I’m where I am not in spite of my background, but because of it.
My bestie took some pics of me rockin my

I never would have thought 5 days ago when I posted my first post on Twitter that I would have reached so many kind souls &
#CEP
. I am so grateful for your support. I promise to continue to use this platform to advocate for young people & what we can achieve.
#CareLeaversCan
💪🏽
@GeeMinx
Of course you can, ask me anything! My GCSE’s were predicted D’s before foster care, but I achieved 14 A’s-C’s (mostly B’s). Then A-Levels I was motivated by sheer desperation to leave my town and escape. So got Distinction, BBB. I studied late at night when there was less chaos.
Spoke at an awards ceremony in London last night as an “inspirational speaker” for kids in care. I soon realised the really inspiring ones were the young people there
I felt at home to be in a room with so much
#CEP
talent & personality. We truly are so remarkable
One of the loveliest ways to help a young
#CareExperienced
person is to volunteer as an
#IndependentVisitor

@CoramVoice

"He had been made to endure a life that no child should lead.”- Michelle Heeley KC
There are half a million (reported) cases of child abuse a year in the U.K. At what point do we confront abuse, neglect & childhood trauma as a public health crisis? And start tackling the roots?
Thank you LBC for interviewing me this morning on this tragic case - we now await a report from the Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel - Mum and partner guilty of killing Alfie Steele, 9, who died in cold bath following... - LBC

Just finished Chris’s book & it’s a must for anyone who wants to understand the system. In the legal industry, I think we could benefit from learning more about lived experiences.

Going into 2024, I want to celebrate everyone working towards improving the lives of
#CEP
& children in their own way. Since joining X, I’ve met the most incredible people. It’s such an honour to be a part of this community & I’m v excited for my 2024 plans 🎉
Happy New Year 🥳
Growing up, I remember charities bringing us Christmas food as we had no money. Whilst speaking to the tragedy of U.K. poverty, I look back on it fondly. They played with us & made us laugh.
Despite hard times, I’ve never forgotten the kindness of others. Merry Christmas all🎄❤️
What has moved me the most about the comments on my story is that so many people from different sides of the political spectrum have come together to share their humanity.
Is there anything more beautiful? If we can come together for anything, shouldn’t it be children?
A week ago I shared my story. Now I am honoured to be going to schools and speaking to young people / hosting workshops to make the law & higher education less alien to them. If you know any schools who could benefit from this please message me or pass on to someone who would? 🙏🏼

Proud to have spoken on
@BBCRadioLondon
this morning about my experience going into care at 13. Highlights: 1) Discussing the stigma.
#CEP
are not “troublemakers,” they are children. Who deserve love. 2) How chaotic it is growing up in care & 3) being called a badass on live air
Not usually a theatre girl, but my friends suggested I go see

“The fact that you’re alive is a miracle. Just stay alive, that would be enough”
In many fields of law (& life), we will come across individuals who spent time in care. Learning our lived experiences, such as reading books by
#CEP
or documentaries (like the Joe Swash one coming up), can only be a strength in empathising and understanding those we work for.
“Diversity improves the quality of decision-making.”
Was delightful to listen to Baroness Hale speak at UEA last night. She touched on many important topics including diversity. I look forward to ensuring inclusion extends to

I think that one of the more subtle ways people can be harmful to
