Senior journalist at the Australian Jewish News after a 25 year career reporting on the Pacific Islands for Australian and New Zealand radio. Jew and Zionist.
Two Australian Jewish MPs from rival political parties are working together on Jewish issues on a bipartisan basis. Read about how Josh Burns (Labor) and David Southwick (Liberal) are working together in a difficult time.
This is a brilliant price of journalism. Andy Ngo has used classic techniques of solid, shoe-leather journalism to lay bare aspects of an hysterical witch hunt atmosphere. I’d nominate this for a Pulitzer. This is the kind of reporting we need more of nowadays.
Are LGBT people being beaten nearly to death & even killed on the streets of Portland in unprovoked attacks? Or are we actually being hoaxed? I dig into the story behind Portland’s latest moral panic blaming Trump supporters for a rash of hate crimes:
Well, the Jewish News in Australia has had its Instagram feed disabled. “Fraud and deception” is what we were “reported” for. Take a wild shot in the dark as to where this comes from. Our Facebook page is still up but. Lots of Australian Jews being doxxed individually right now.
Polish General Staff: “Tanks? Um … they were here just a moment ago. Not sure what happened to them to be honest. Maybe they’re migrating east for the spring”.
The Poles say a sudden arrival of large numbers of T-72s to the Donbas operated by the Ukrainian Army can’t be linked to the disappearance of the Polish 100 tanks from in Lublin.
They say T-72s can be bought in any army surplus store, just like the weapons used in Crimea in 2014
Why are MPs being rounded up just as curfew begins?
Why are MPs being taken in for questioning for commenting on a bill that has been tabled in Parliament?!
Fiji Women's Rugby 7's Player’s Fan Support I’ll be honest here, I’m supporting this largely because Frank Bainimarama is trying to stop it. It embarrasses his government which hasn’t supported women’s rugby the way it has men’s.
The man who led a military coup against the elected Fiji government has issued a statement which I think we can all agree necessitates everyone purchasing a new irony meter.
You know what? Police Commissioner Qiliho is right. the Fiji Sun IS an essential service. Where else are Lautoka residents going to get a reliable daily supply of toilet paper?
Let’s unite behind the government, they tell us. Don’t be political, they tell us. Not a time for pettiness, they tell us.
At a time when people need trusted sources of information,
@fijitimes
vans are being stopped at the Lautoka “border”. Fiji Sun vans go straight through.
@corybernardi
Assessment: a deadly physical threat exists. Produces weapon. Discharges weapon repeatedly into centre of body mass. Determines threat source is neutralised. Secures the perps weapon. Maintains lock on target. Rolls perp over preparatory to handcuffing. Training meets experience.
The behaviour of our Prime Minister, (yes I said 'our') in assaulting a Member of Parliament is equivalent to an assault on the people, voters, sanctity of Parliament and our democracy. This is not the first time but this is what THE PEOPLE voted.

He died in lonely and undeserved exile from the country he was born in and which he loved wholeheartedly and worked so hard and for so long to help. One day the scoundrels and thugs in power will be gone. On that day, Brij Lal will rest in the place he deserves to. Home.
Fiji is a dictatorship. It’s run by two men backed up by military force. It has the external trappings of democracy but none of the reality. An opposition party leader has been taken in by police for opposing proposed legislation. Soviet commissars would approve. Outrageous!
No, the Australian GG has nothing to do with security arrangements, that’s entirely up to the Fiji government. Certainly I’e never heard of such clumsy and heavy handed arrangements here in Australia. Okay, maybe for the Queen.
The “Zionist hate crime” that never was. Does the Jewish community now get an apology from those protesters who invaded Princes Park in Caulfield and forced a synagogue service to be evacuated because they held Jews responsible for this?
This utter bullshit is happening in a Pacific nation Australia and New Zealand have been trying to help. Really not seeing any positive effects of that so far. Why are we helping prop up what is clearly still the same military dictatorship it’s been since 2006?

Officers were at NFP leader
@bimanprasad
’s home at 6pm this afternoon to take him for questioning.
Macnamara MP Josh Burns is a decent, hard working parliamentarian who represents his constituents well and is well thought of in the community regardless of political affiliation. But he’s Jewish, so…..
After 19 years serving Pacific audiences for the ABC, I have decided that it’s time for a new chapter and will be leaving. Anyone interested in hiring a good communicator with 25 years experience in the Pacific, let me know and I'll send you my CV.
@TheLazyGin
As opposed to beheading babies, putting them in ovens, raping women, murdering entire families and killing and kidnapping young people at a music festival? Your boos mean nothing to me. I’ve seen what makes you cheer.
This sounds like a particularly good idea. Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK would make a powerful economic, trade and military bloc. Have something like the Aust-NZ mutual right to live and work extended to Canada and UK and you’ve got yourself a deal!
The vice chancellor of the University of the South Pacific has been detained and deported to Australia by the Fiji “Government”. An appalling act of bastardry against a man who has been trying to root out corruption and political interference.
This message was sent by VCP this afternoon after landing at Brisbane Australia:
While I sit here on the plane I would like to share my thoughts from last night
At around 11-1130pm while sleeping, I heard a women calling out Pals name inside our locked backyard. The back gate-

If it didn’t have retractable metal claws, mutton chop sideburns an an aching sense of regret then it wasn’t a Wolverine. Still Canadian but!
Elephantiasis in the legs and a thousand-yard stare like he did three tours in ‘Nam and now takes LSD to cope with the flashbacks. That’s a novel way to commemorate Fiji at 50.

Well he’d know about political witch-hunts, he organised more than enough of them in his time in office. Remember, this is the man who used FICAC to target innocent people like Imrana Jalal.
The ABC's Fiji reporter
@LiceMovono
on the scene in Suva, questioning former attorney general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum after he was granted bail and released from custody today.
He was charged with one count of abuse of office.
He labelled the charges "a political witch-hunt".

All I did was retweet that report on Irish anti semitism and say my own experience living there made me believe it and I’ve been blocking what seems like half the population of Dublin ever since. Such charming folk, such an expressive turn of phrase. I know you know what I mean.
“ Hearts full of youth, hearts full of truth, six parts gin to one part vermouth”. About to graduate. Again. With a Masters this time. Gizz a job, I can do that.
Fiji PM, Frank Bainimarama, who is now the chairman of the Pacific Islands Forum, spoke in parliament this week of the importance of regionalism in the Pacific.
Robbed? We’ll never know! Why did the ref refuse to go to video review? Just a disgrace!
@tongaNRL
you did your nation & the Pacific proud.
@RLWC2017
organisers you should be ashamed, but you got what you wanted!
Fiji PM assaults opppsition MP, Speaker dies nothing. Hey, let’s get the Police Commissioner on the case. He’s done such a great job finding out who tried to burn down Judge Gordon Ward’s house. Or is this just an example of democracy with Fijian characteristics?
Thank you for doing your job, Stella. I just hope someone ‘from the top’ doesn’t make a phone call to the ‘higher-ups’ at FijiTV to tell Stella to take down this tweet or she’ll need to clean up her desk.

Israel was built to be a sanctuary for Jews fleeing persecution. The denial of Ugandan Jews that haven is despicable. They deserve to be welcomed into Israel immediately.
Bring 👏 them 👏 home 👏
Gas the Jews or Where’s the Jews? It’s possible to hear both.
I recall the the gold or blue dress from a few years ago.
What matters is the rally was designed to intimidate Jews (and the NSW Police). It included f..k the Jews. It was antisemitic.
Journalism is about interviewing people, and then publishing things they actually said. It’s not really that difficult to remember. But the Fiji Sun manages to screw up even these simple tasks. It really ought to be filed under fiction.
Post floating on social media. Fiji Rugby high performance boss calling out Fiji Sun for its journalism. I don’t know if it’s true (yet), but it’s 100% possible.
Journalists in Australia and NZ, you should be doing stories about the extraordinary scenes outside Samoa’s locked Parliament today. The judiciary is confronting the denial of their authority. This is a major Pacific turning point.

This is the Chief Justice in red, with the Police Commissioner and the whole Judiciary returning to the Court House after being locked out.
The orders of the Supreme Court to convene Parliament today were ignored.
@angry_kpra
Yes, I think so. In New Zealand, Indo-Fijians have seperate organisations from the Indian community, although they coooerate a lot. They are regarded as part of the Pacific Island community.
This lone Russian woman was standing on Prince’s Bridge in central Melbourne just now. I passed her on my way home from work.Many people came up and spoke sympathetically to her. It was pretty sad to see her doing this really, but as she said, what else can she do?

By calling for a ceasefire, you are effectively calling for Israel to abandon its right of self defence, as Hamas have never shown any interest in the laws of war. And I note the resolution ignore the Jews held hostage. You may talk amongst yourselves. We will take action.
It's almost COB and still no updates from health/govt officials. Hundreds of people lining up in front of supermarkets, panic buying, spreading the virus, unwittingly(not their fault), that's already widespread in the community. Govt needs to front the nation soon.

The Low Countries may not have especially fond memories of the last time they experienced the tender mercies of Hapsburg rule. Don’t ride through Amsterdam in an open car.

Where do you live again? California you say? I see. So How are the Yarok, Maidu, Chumash, Cahuilleno, Mojave, Yokuts, Pomo, Paiute, and Modoc people doing these days?
I am very happy to report that I have a job! I am working at Bupa as a communications advisor in the dental area. It’s a great company and it’s good to be working for an organisation that helps people live healthier lives.
My latest article for the ANU Devpolicy Blog. Shenanigans in Suva, about the perils of an authoritarian government having its own people laughing at it. Last week's incident in which the cabinet hid in Suvavouu House may have caused serious damage.
@iowahawkblog
This is all a residual effect of the 1939-1945 unpleasantness. And the 1948 misunderstanding. And the 1956 contretemps. And the 1967 brouhaha…
This is simply not true. There have been numerous cases of people in Fiji police custody being subjected to phyisical abuse, some of which meets the definition of torture. There have been multiple Amnesty International reports on this.
This does not surprise me. Ireland was one of the only European countries not to boycott the Durban hate fest. I lived there for three months and its political culture is deeply weird and disturbing.
If Australia doesn’t show up to the regular meetings, then it really doesn’t have a leg to stand on when it complains about other countries increasing their influence. This isn’t rocket science.
Are Indo-Fijians Pacific Islanders? It's one of those hot-button questions about identity that can spark a lot of heat. Who defines identity? What about the very long-established Chinese communities in places like Solomon Islands? It's tricky.
@lagipoiva
That should never have slipped through the editorial process. A junior reporter sending something like this in is asking for a lecture on ethics in reporting on minors.

I remember going into Waterstones near Trafalgar Square some years ago and asking if they had “Neoconservatism: Why we need it”. The sales associate looked puzzled and suggested it might perhaps be in the comedy section.
The wall of Gaza hostage posters opposite the St Kilda City Hall was vandalised overnight. Today the Jewish community restored it. MPs David Southwick (in the video), Josh Burns and Victorian upper house member Georgie Crozier spoke before the posters were put back up.
Refreshing isn't it? The one who (unnecessarily) referred the then opposition parties and individuals to FICAC now sees himself referred to FICAC by the institution and staff he led. People have decided on change !
@EphraimGopin
None of this top secret insider knowledge counts until and unless it’s confirmed by my source inside the place where I get my shakshuka in Bat Yam!
The job if a journalist is NOT to tell what what you ought to think. It is to give you the facts you need to make up your own mind. If two people hear/ read an item of mine and come away with two different opinions, I consider that a good result.

I make it a point never to interrupt my opponent when they are in the middle of making a spectacular mistake. These people are incapable of doing anything to promote their cause, such as it is, seemingly preferring to make as many people as possible angry at their pathetic antics
