If you want to know how ridiculous unis are being re. deductions for a boycott, here's my situ. I have 3 dissertation students. I took those on as a FAVOUR to the dep't. It isn't counted in my workload (100% research). If I participate in MAB, I'll lose 50% of wages.

Just met with a student who's designed a project looking at experiences of deindustrialisation in Manchester as conveyed in the music of Joy Division (1970s/80s) and Oasis (90s) & I've never been so jealous of an undergrad project in my life. Really excited to see it progress!

If you ever wonder about my love of trains, it comes from this man. John Joseph Maher; a proud Irish immigrant, and a solid railwayman all his days. Retired at 65 (imagine!), as station master at Wemyss Bay in 1994. A life well lived, and a life complete. Sleep well granda.

@roselynaguila @lisamdanish @schoppik It varies a lot by institution. At top tier places, you had better work MUCH more than 40 hrs/wk as a grad student or you will not be taken seriously. At lower tier places, grad students as a whole do not average 40 hr weeks.

Oral historians really don't talk enough about how horrific it is having to listen back to your own interviews. I just heard myself pronounce "decades" as "de-CADES" - I've never done that at any other time AFAIK, and I'm currently hiding under my desk in pure embarrassment.
