Recently,
@tavissmiley
asked what I mean when I say I am “too embarrassed to fail.”
Fear of embarrassment is a great motivator - you don't want people who support you see you fail, and you don't want the people who doubted you to get the satisfaction of being right.
Failure is designed to help us learn from our mistakes and become the fuel we need to move forward in our careers and lives.
Don’t let your past hold you back. Let your failures fuel you!
Little matters more than the way you work with your team.
That’s what true leadership is - when you are able to achieve goals with your team. To me, this means developing my team's skills so they can reach their full potential.
How do you ensure your employees succeed?
Communication is key.
But we often take for granted when it comes to practicing being excellent communicators is the listening aspect. When your employees are being listened to they feel understood and confident.
How do you practice active listening in the workplace?
Every successful founder has a little crazy in them. For me, that meant dropping everything to start Tru Optik.
You never know what life experiences will lead you to, and for me it opened my eyes to start a business that eventually saw a nine figure exit.
Growing up in the Bronx I would always dream about my future. But owning a professional soccer team was outside the realm of my imagination. Now, thanks to

I spoke about Netflix's 3rd quarter earnings which at the time, was their lowest earnings for their 3rd quarter in the last 5-6 years. I believe it was because Netflix was not doing anything different. To learn more, watch here:
In my earliest days of entrepreneurship, I made a bad investment which cost me a lot. This taught me the ultimate life lesson - always take responsibility for our actions. When a mistake happens, it is easy to point fingers, but greatness is only achieved through accountability.

I explain that corporations love to make claims about how much they care about diversity and inclusion, but reality doesn’t line up. While some companies have stepped up, many have not made good on their pledges.

More densely populated area than several existing MLS markets, higher soccer viewership, more fortune 500/1000 companies, and less direct NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL competition in market 🤔⚽️
Having opportunities are essential to achieving success. Belief isn’t enough, we need to lean into early education opportunities, particularly STEM. The sooner people can learn, the sooner they can get their foot in the door.

So I normally only tweet a few times and year and look at tweets from others like a couple times a month. Going to try to really engage on twitter for a few weeks and see if it sticks 🤷🏿♂️. Maybe I’ll even get an

Believe me we looked at Stamford, Norwalk, Bridgeport, NH and Danbury locations for 3yrs. No where else can you get enough land close to public transportation. Bport infrastructure is underrated and the community deserves some investment. It will be a great win for all of CT!
Hardest part of now being an angel investor is saying no to impressive founders with good ideas and early traction. Second hardest part is feeling like you paid to become an employee of the ones you invested in....lol

I’ve gotten a lot of great feedback that

This time got personal.
Dragged out of his car at gunpoint & handcuffed 4x, even just a few yrs ago (by then a CEO). Never arrested for anything. Just Black in America.
Here’s his story
I’m humbled to be included as

on the list of ten of the largest business exits by African American CEOs and entrepreneurs. This list includes titans such as Oprah, Bob Johnson, and Jay-Z. I am very grateful, thank you!
Reflecting on my conversation with Beet TV, I urge for greater diversity and inclusion in the adtech world. With better STEM training and coding for young people of color, more opportunities can open up.
To hear about how this can be done, listen here:

Don’t let that ruin your trip. Of all the black founders I know that raised at least $5MM of venture capital up to those w/ 9 figure exists (including my own) only 1 raised their money in Silicon Valley. East coast and LA far from perfect, but more inclusive than the valley 🤷🏿♂️
More Black businesses have been launched than ever before. However, they are receiving less VC capital than pre-pandemic. Corporations and VC firms love to claim that they care about DE+I, but the reality doesn’t match.

firms and their partners (regardless of age) are like aging MLB sluggers. They’re not that useful in the field and strike out often, but they are worth keeping around because they occasionally hit massive home runs.
@TurnerNovak
Your statement might be true. But majority of metaverse startups themselves will fail as well over the next 2 years. Too many lemmings and wanna be entrepreneurs like in every hype cycle. The best founders will rise to the top regardless of if they are in the metaverse or not

It’s about centralized location relative to travel and public transportation. Can pin on a map more central, but not in terms of population in state within 60 mins. Bport - 75% of state can get to in about an hr by car, Amtrak, metro north, ferry, or boat

Appreciate it man! I hope to play all the New England teams we can regardless of league (even outside of US Open Cup). It would be so exciting for all the fans. And I want bragging rights 😉. The new Pawtucket stadium looks like it’s gonna to be beautiful too!
We must immerse ourselves in learning about people’s experiences in a different market. Listening to other people can spark new ideas for your business and understand what’s up and coming.
What are some industry-specific challenges your business faces?

Not counting on anyone pulling us up…lol. My group will have to cut the expansion check like anyone else. But having a great MLS academy, and a succesful MLS Next Pro team and then being able to cut the check — Is the closest thing in the US to earning promotion 🤷🏿♂️🤔
@tkawaja
90% of 2010-15 adtech startups were BS too. But for 10% of us worked out pretty damn well. I just made 2 crypto angel investments after turning down or not entertaining dozens. I don’t think I’d even seed invest in a new adtech startup that isn’t a blockchain based strategy 🤷🏿♂️
I had a great time speaking at the 9th annual Eclipse IP Futures Conference in October!

the customer service is so inconsistent. I rather it be just ok all the time than great sometimes and terrible other times. At least then you know what to expect

I’m a fan of every team in CT. If Hartford had ambition to go to MLS I might have invested in them. Now can be fun for CT fans to play each other 🤷🏿♂️. An MLS team in CT makes more revenue for NE, NYC and RB than adding another team on west coast or down south.

How can 13-2
@AlabamaMBB
be ranked 4 in
#top25
and 15-2
@UConnMBB
is ranked behind them when UConn beat Alabama by 15 points head to head just a few weeks ago? 🤷🏿♂️🤔
When I decided to sell Tru Optik, it was no easy choice of who to sell to.
However, when TransUnion sent me a supportive during the George Floyd protests, that was a major turning point.
Learn more about the decision here:
Wow impressed with
@Timberwolves
victory tonight. Superstar had tough game, questionable coaching decisions in first half, inconsistent refereeing the whole game. But stuck together, key players stepped up, great coaching adjustment and they pulled off huge victory

Would love to have lived is this fairytale land of just finding 2-3 smart people and raising a $3 - $6M seed round 🤣. Every black founder I know including myself with a 9 figure+ exit only raised a $250k - $1.5MM seed round. $1M check from
@a16z
would have been great in 2014 🤷🏿♂️
