So... time to share!
I will be running
@readinghalf
April 24 (in spiderman colours!) in memory of Elliott Peto, fundraising for Elliott's Arc. Elliott sadly passed away on 1st December 2022, Aged 5 after being diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, an aggressive type of cancer. 1/2
I don't think I have ever won an award so can get away with a few award selfies right? :) thank you sooo much
@HEE_DigiReady
team for the nomination,
@SABPDigital
for the awesome support, thanks to everyone who has supported me. It was such a strong category I am truly humbled! X
TRIGGER WARNING: miscarriage/baby loss
We lost a baby this year & I've decided to reflect. It helps me to process but also to raise the profile on why we need to support others.
With thanks to
@hcwomenleaders
and
@FlexNHS
for supporting this piece.
Things I did not expect today..
1. A general whirlwind of a day and some bloody amazing allies
2. Winning this award!!!
#FutureDigitalLeader
#DHALS21
3. Getting a short but sweet dance with some beautiful friends to burn off some steam
I'll reply to everything else tomorrow β€οΈ
Little thread. We have been a bit busy in the Cowey household!
Am really excited (slightly terrified, mainly excited π) to be joining
@SABPDigital
@sabpNHS
this Summer as a Strategic Transformation Lead. I am so excited about working in mental health & with a great team (1/n)
Major imposter syndrome today at
#aspiretogether
#regionaltalentboard
filming & reminded I AM part of a board & I am giving my opinions as a *board member*. Iβm a mum, Iβm a woman, Iβm mixed race, I have anxiety.I have different needs sometimes but if I can do this so can you! πͺ
Apparently I'm a finalist for the Future Digital Leader category π¬Slightly embarrassed, very humbled. A great group of nominations - both shortlists and finalists β€οΈ thanks for the nomination
@HEE_DigiReady
& for the support
@SABPDigital
π₯°
The finalists of the Digital Health Awards have been revealed π and you can find out who won at
@DHLeadersSummit
next month.
Find out who our finalists are below π
When you feel like youβve smashed the outlook rules by suggesting a meeting of 1315-1355. I feel like such a rebel π. Stopping back to backs is the way forwards though!
1/n Hi there! Am really excited to say I am leading a project around the future vision of the NHS Digital Academy. Here is a short thread which talks a bit about the work. If you would like to get involved/input your view then please contact me :)
LOVED that this included addressing the nation about what a CIO in the NHS gets involved in π (even if I had to bribe the child with cake to continue watching) - two top blokes I very much enjoy working with!

@jamesfreed5
@Andy_Kinnear
Hi ππ½ Dealing with some personal stuff at the moment so likely to be a bit quiet / ignoring any threads that are serious at the moment because I donβt have the mental bandwidth right now. Thankful for great family, friends & colleagues. Iβll be ok, just need to refocus a little x
Interesting conversation with the 4 year old this morn - wishing me good luck for my first day then wondering why I went back to exactly the same room/table to get set up π¬ (she didn't really care as long as I looked after her toys...)
Time for pre-induction βοΈ!
@SABPDigital
Did a bit of mind mapping tonight to help me feel more prepared and confident for the week ahead. Realising how much genuinely has been out of my control recently, there's a bit more I can influence / do, but again to be kinder to myself.
#IveGotThis
#DoesntMeanItsEasy
The flurry of twitter activity last night / this morning on BAME in the NHS prompted me to think about my own experiences and what I, and perhaps also you, can do differently. Please take a look - there are some important things in here.
So... Did a phone interview for internal role but didnβt get to next stage. To be fair itβs not the right role for me (and I know I need to be happy in what I do!) but Iβm really glad I tried, got the experience & learnt a bit about myself along the way with some good feedback ππΌ
We marched, it was incredible! The current system isn't working for anyone, for parents, for children, for childcare providers and staff. Something must change!
1/n Morning Twitter! I wanted to share a short thread about the work I have been leading on (The future vision of the expansion of the Digital Academy) & how you can get involved. It has been a real privilege to do this work as part of the
@NHS_HealthEdEng
#DigitalReadiness
team.
Not the best start to 2022 but it's actually forced me to relax π€¦π½ββοΈ. All done now, plenty of rest to follow and π€π½ all is as ok as can be.
Bought my little Bluey mascot in! Cried going under GA as frightened - but without exception everyone at
@RBNHSFT
has been amazing x
Aha it's on Twitter so it must be real π - strange being on the other side of it all. I'm excited, am a bit nervous given what life has thrown at me recently but I feel well supported & super lucky to be doing it alongside
@SABPDigital
peers

Decided to apply for an internal promotion and trying to not do the woman thing of oh Iβll never get it, Iβm not good enough, I donβt deserve this.
Plus at the very least I know Iβve given it a good shot & I can learn from the experience of the process!
Please RT! Are you part of the health informatics (non clinical) workforce in the UK & Ireland? Please complete this survey on career paths. More responses = more insight. Extra info in thread & also on the website. Thank you! π
@jamesfreed5
@DiBullman
Every now & again something happens that just shakes my confidence, the anxiety rockets & to be honest it makes me question whether Iβve got it in me to continue doing a leadership role in the long run. Iβll try but itβs so exhausting when your brain works against you π₯
Lighting a candle tonight for the three we never got to meet.
Sending love to friends, family, colleagues β€οΈ - being part of the really s*****y club no one wants to be part of.

Had a weird experience last night. Maybe I heard it wrong, but pretty sure I didn't. Was asked if I was in a relationship w/quite a high profile CIO. Banter or not, made me feel like total s*** & what I heard was you've slept to where you got to. It is NOT ok to make these jokes.
Trigger warning - babyloss
Found out alone my baby had no heartbeat. Because my husband wasn't allowed to come with me to the scan. I texted him as he sat in the hospital car park.
I just feel a combo of rage /disbelief / devastation each time I hear about the essential drinks
As Boris Johnson tells MPs it was absolutely "essential" for him to hold repeated drinks events and leaving parties during lockdown, here's a reminder of what he wrote to a seven-year-old girl about cancelling her own birthday party during that time.
So my parents kept everything.... looking after A for a few days over the Easter holidays and the
#RainbowBrite
curtains / bedsheets have come out.
Loads of us had this right π
It's been a long week! Exam this morning.... interesting to think about what aspects might be applicable to smaller work too. I am tired though, four days of online "classroom" training isn't kind to me π€ͺ
I do sometimes worry I over share - partly for that βcareer limiting factorβ & also people thinking oh no sheβs gone off on one again - but it makes it all worthwhile when you get a lovely message about helping to stimulate an open discussion β€οΈ
#ItsOkayToBeNotOkay
Iβve had my suspicions & became very very conscious of late I am one of the most senior people from a bme background I know - but this graph still shocks me.

@NetworkShuri
if you havenβt already seen...)
Still smiling!
#flexibleworking
doesnβt mean youβre a slacker. It means working around life, trying to make it work, working when youβre most productive, supporting the needs of your workplace wherever you can! Itβs not the easy way out!

@HEE_DigiReady
@NHSDigAcademy
Just cannot under estimate the power of seeing someone who looks like you, that you can relate to, how you might aspire to be one day. We talk about
#diversity
and
#rolemodelling
a lot at the moment in the NHS. What a great example.
While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the lastβbecause every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.
Having a really hard day today - combination of a few things. Actually just giving myself permission to spend the day wallowing in my pyjamas - and that's ok! Dealing with grief from what feels intangible is so full of ups and downs. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day π€π½β€οΈ
31.71 miles for week one of
#NHS1000miles
- combination of reading half marathon training and lots of walks including lovely touristy trip around London!
The first email I opened up this morning was a decline to a meeting but it made me smile, it was from one of my male colleagues - the declination was due to him doing the school run that morning. Love it - this needs to be more normalised!
@FlexNHS
I never do this lol and promise it's more I'm still in shock than a brag but couldn't resist! It's me holding an actual award with my name on it π
#NewProfilePic
I was pretty nervous sharing this but it has done what I hoped it would, stimulate discussions about things so rarely talked about & help us to think a bit differently.
TY for an amazing response - me &
@KateBurkeNHS
@FlexNHS
alongside
@hcwomenleaders
will continue the dialogue.

- my needs at work have been different for each one but support has been a welcome consistency
-it's so exhausting. How many times do you put yourself through this shit π€·π½ββοΈ
@LondonAllergy
As an NHS manager the day I feel I have to protect the rep of a trust over patient care is the day I walk*. This is all so heartbreaking for all involved, those poor staff and those babies & their families.
*although without knowing the detail yet I hope some tried to fight it
Finding social media (and the news) v hard this week. A combination of blatant rule breaking and genuine disbelief against a backdrop of exhausted/broken friends & colleagues, plus everyone suddenly an expert in running the NHS. Havenβt got the mental bandwidth to engage π€―π«
Not going to lie, slightly emotional at the moment (suspect many of us are?!) and totally cried at some lovely feedback I got yesterday. To be told am making a positive impact and role modelling β€οΈ means more to me (personally) than performance.
#CulturalChange
#KeepOnSwimming
Just saying really...this is your photo of anyone who may say they're ok but it really isn't ok.
By any means I'm prob dealing w/ the hardest personal stuff *ever* while my "career" peaks-I know where to go though.
It's also ok to not be ok. Reach out&look after one another π
Anyone else struggling with falling out with friends & family over warnings to be wary sharing misinformation & only trust official sources? Feel like I need to pick my battles but also have a duty to keep people signposted to the right info. Itβs tiring.
β terrifying presentation done on digital & data system mental health
β avoided actually throwing up in the bin next to me
β went "aasha style" with story telling / reflections β€οΈ
Suspect a comedown will follow but a great way end the week & so excited for this agenda...

What a whirlwind 48 hours. There will be blogs (obv!) but my final thought is do NOT change for anybody. I hope I'm helping to show there can be another way. Whether it's anxiety,

Trigger warning miscarriage/baby loss / IVF.
Have seen two posts this week on how triggering LFT testing can be when you've gone a m/c or fertility treatment and messing with your head wanting / not wanting one or two lines. All the feels for that. Hate it!
βthere is often an assumption (held both by the organisation and its employees) that senior roles cannot be done on a flexible or part-time basis, again resulting in women being less likely to apply,or to be successful in their application, for promotion.β
Thrilled to share that I got the
@CHIMECEO
call & have passed the
#CHCIO
@CIOCHIME
exam π - it's been a good week at work too working more closely with one of our divisions, so this is all the confidence boost stuff I needed π₯° hopefully the first of many
@SABPDigital
women too!
And without going into the detail today (many of you will put two and two together!) the flexibility I needed was due to womens health reasons & then balancing my own mental health at the time. This is important to acknowledge, or I'd have just given up.
Finding out about
#miscarriage
alone while my husband waited in the hosp car park, remembering the woman next to me in absolute bits who I wanted to comfort, knowing what so many of my colleagues went through, unable to grieve loss as a wider family. Don't tell me to move on.
Unintended consequence of the bee dress WITH POCKETS is I can now carry around her toys. Already carried my phone around earlier alongside a coffee & a water because I could! Did I mention I love having a dress WITH POCKETS?!
#BeeDress
This is NOT the time for unnecessary presenteeism. If you can do your job remotely then you are one less person potentially spreading this virus. If you are a senior manager you need to think long & hard if you are discouraging your staff due to your own preceptions.
This is an interesting piece by
@HSJnews
- demonstrates the huge cultural shift that - in some areas is taking place at extreme pace because circumstance dictates it must - and in others is bumping up against the same old barriers.
We know we can
@FlexNHS
and now we must.
This letter in
@GraziaUK
today struck a chord. I wonder how many of us in the NHS have had a head in hands / angry tears sort of moment? Itβs probably not because we are weak but because we care about what we do & wanting to do the right thing...

this is bloody terrifying and a one in a life time event. I have cried so many times in the last week. Any of my internal or external colleagues please talk to people donβt do this alone - Iβm here for you.
It's been a bit of a draining day I won't lie but am going to focus on the fact it's opened some dialogue, it's sadly happening to so many women and hopefully more people will think to call stuff out. I am now going to try & enjoy my future digital leader nomination tonight β€οΈπ
May have slightly overdone it last night but managed to get out for my first run in ages, v slow but managed the full 20 mins β€οΈ makes vegging out on the sofa all day a bit more acceptable right!
Would love to see the equality impact assessment done on the latest living with covid plan. I guess it's easy if you're not the one having to choose between testing to protect others around you or putting food on the table when you're on a zero hours contract as just one example.
Tonight I shall be celebrating with a (guilt free!) glass of (real!) prosecco as tomorrow marks 100 days back in work. Cheesy but it feels like Iβve turned my life around, partly due to luck, partly due to working bloody hard with my anxiety & working flexibly with confidence β€οΈ
