I have great respect for the L/S greats (I can only hope to achieve that one day). But- had a friend who worked at blue ridge. They held core compounders and analysts spent most time looking at random shorts. I think L/S has mistaken biz quality as a driver vs rate tailwind

My contribution to the $1-5mn PA discourse -ppl saying $10mn+ are delusional, r/fatfire already solved for 10 -have a spouse that works, you need health insurance -a lot of expensive nyc things are because you’re time-poor, and the spend assumptions include wagie signaling

The landed gentry lived in country houses for most of the year, going to London for a few months. If you had 9 months to do nothing and enjoy nature, you wouldn’t pick the Hamptons. Go to Hawaii / south of France / Vancouver / etc. Country houses today are wage-slave LARPing

Lot of outrage theater on this one, but this is personal. So here’s the other side: putting a quota on admissions of Asians gives people no choice but to participate in an arms race to appear superhuman. When meritocracy is not rewarded, playing to white liberal fantasies will be

On spend assumptions: a lot is wealth signaling. A Hamptons house is a work-week-bound wage-slave classic. Harder to signal but the ultimate status (and real consequence, we are hurtling to death, hours ticking away) is not working. Not possible for most so less discussed

The most genuine mistakes I see are TAM mistakes, eg NOW or UBER really did end up with much larger TAMs than expected because cost of service was much lower so induced demand. But otherwise, stocks are not supposed to rerate for a decade. ERP, FCF yields, neutral rate matter

If you were on your deathbed, how much would you pay to save 2 hrs a day in commute = 480hrs/yr ex-vacay = 60 8hr workdays = ~2-3 months of pay? Spend up to that amount on real estate to be closer to work. You are actively dying, every minute is precious and to be savored.

Just to be clear: free time is the prerequisite. You don’t even need a country house, you can live in the suburbs and still go hunting etc, just drive there. And if you want something that screams I have money, buy a larger house in the city. You’ll do more hosting there

I respectfully disagree. Agree on no intrinsic meaning, but I’ve strong conviction our brains evolved to feel deeper meaning from tribalism/exercise/etc. Cooking/food can be deeply primal. Maybe you’re built different, but prob not. Execute normie actions ruthlessly and vibe out

In fact most activities in life aren't really that intrinsically meaningful. Does cooking have any intrinsic meaning? Or maths? Or arts, or science? Sure it's more practical, but it still requires *me* to ascribe meaning to them

There is simply not enough time. I have even considered hiring an offshore personal assistant to help with family matters. Would also say the reply on stay at home wife being an advantage I think is wrong. Dual income lets you take more risk

The line when Mississippi health chief says its not state's job to ensure vaccines get into people's arms What? Whose job is it? Not the Feds. They just get vaccine to states Not the states. They just get vaccine to hospitals, clinics So its all on front line providers? 7/n

This is the mental model I’ve been looking for. I know a lot of folks that want to signal “quiet luxury” but their personal finances are a mess, and they don’t want to spend time discussing actual praxis, like what’s going on in macro or how to charge expenses to an S Corp

@dieworkwear It’s a cargo cult. The belief is that wearing expensive-looking clothes will imbue you with money. Sometimes that’s about infiltrating upper-class spaces (good luck). Sometimes it’s more supernatural.

As a fins guy, fundamentals have always mattered, we’re just not in a bubble anymore Trading a stock is different from having a view on fair value which can differ for a decade - doesn’t change the view, eg you should know when equity risk premium is off from history and why

See many L/S pros tweeting in despair & I get it. Pain threshold for equity investors is low. Just 18 months of no visibility in mgmt forecasts...to now confidently projecting 3-5 years out again, which in most cases makes no sense. Fundamentals don't matter anymore.

I’ve had the problem of NOT spending, and I think it boils down to the actual purpose. One heuristic I love is “if you couldn’t show anyone what you bought, would you still buy it for the functionality alone” I now yolo money at time-savers, pre-cut broccoli to biz class redeye

In my mind the game becomes about the compounded effect of time saved. Working smarter. Networking strategically. Living in the city, cutting commute. Having extended family visit. Hiring help. 80/20 on decisions on spending money. Entirely focused on execution and not signaling

my experience of living in new york is that of moving through a space of difference, finding myself at specific locations for specific reasons and recalling personal memories feels uncanny when this clashes with the surface NYC of taxis, movies, etc which is also what most know

gardening is unfortunately fascistic. i mean this literally. you pretend to be a Lord and Master, but the complex system is mostly beyond you and your main tools to clumsily implement your totalizing vision of reality are (1) murder, (2) rubber hoses, (3) chemical weapons

I host a lot of dinner parties now, and while they are greatly enjoyable, there’s something I will always cherish about the hours after high school when me and the boys would stand on the sidewalk and shoot the shit while splitting $1 chesters fries and $1 Arizona iced tea
