We call upon all our communities and co-strugglers to take immediate action: to get informed, to spread awareness, to speak out and up, to organize, mobilize, and to commit to standing on the right side of history. 🧵
Thanks to everyone who elected me. I just sent my resignation as an elected ASA Council Member due to the silence (& no forthcoming statement) @ what's happening in Gaza. bell hooks tells us integrity is when words, thoughts & actions match

A cover I love!! ❤️❤️❤️ This book is a game changer. Not necessarily in the content. But I think it will be one for my career - whether for good or for bad I’m not sure, but def a personal game changer in terms of my own vulnerability and thinking

My advice, esp for grad students, on how to write a strong CV. This may seem self-evident to many, but it’s not! I write these essays to reveal the “hidden curriculum” for first gen, students of color, minorities, & others w/o the cultural capital to know:
OMG, just got notification from Stanford University Press regarding the first review of my book!!!
“Global Borderlands has the makings of a scholarly classic, using methodologies from history, sociology, and anthropology to intervene in a broad range of fields, most notably 1/
As someone who was in a literal cult for 3 yrs as a teen, I take issue w ppl who call academia a cult or cult-like. It makes harms of academia exceptional. Instead hierarchies, status, racism, sexism, burnout etc are insidious precisely bc part of professional fields & workplaces
Sociologists really should read more widely. In his 2000 book White Nation, Ghassan Hate writes "My aim, however, is to show that many of those who position themselves as 'multicultural' and 'anti-racists' are merely deploying a more sophisticated fantasy of White supremacy" (23)
I think scholars who advocate more desk rejects and less developmental reviews forget what it’s like to be an early career scholar learning 2 write a paper, &/or don’t realize many people have mentors who don’t provide good feedback, & aren’t in an intellectually supportive dept

Are you teaching classical theory next year? Check out my latest! It’s a coauthored piece on why incorporating race and gender in classical theory is important and discusses 3 ways to do so:

Excited to be selected as a recipient of the 2019-2020 American Fellowship
@AAUW
to work on my second book project on reputation, place and the ways they are racialized and gendered!
Honored and humbled to be selected for the Mellon Emerging Faculty Leaders Award. This award means so much to me, esp because it recognizes all aspects of faculty work - research, teaching and service - and how it relates to creating an inclusive campus environment
MEFL Awards support junior faculty whose research focuses on contemporary American history, politics, culture, and society, and who are committed to the creation of an inclusive campus community for underrepresented students and scholars:
Real talk. Day 13: quarantine is hard. 2 kids, recovering Gma & no break except morning run. Kid(s) do homework, bike rides, zoom virtual play dates etc. I try to do work in 10 min periods when can. Being a single mom academic is hard enough. Not sure can make it thru COVID-19
I need to just let go of comparing myself to who I was pre COVID. COVID shattered me. One ex: I’m not organized anymore, I’m all over the place. And after two years, I’m trying to get back there. But maybe I won’t. Can’t. Bc I’m changed. That’s ok. Need to accept who I am now.
I’m honored to receive an
@AAUW
American Fellowship this year to complete my research on gender, race, and place reputation at
@UCLA
. It's AAUW's largest and oldest funding program that has supported female scholars since 1888:
Wow. Just got reviews back, paper was rejected - no big deal. But reviewer comments like “I regret to say that the paper is both theoretical ponderous and partisan” are why who reviewers are and how they write reviews is important.
Check out my latest! My call for a Du Boisian Econ Soc & for subfield to reckon w it’s own history

(thanks to DH & LG for graciously fact checking this paper that critically engages their work - didn’t know whether to tag)
I'm so livid right now & will prob delete this tweet. Response 2 DEI concerns shouldn't be you are free to leave if you don't think anything will or has changed. wtf
I’m tired and hurt - physically (my hip hurts and I can’t walk without pain or limping), emotionally and mentally. No end insight for childcare or school. I’m tired of crying and being angry over faculty politics and the world. I don’t need advice, I need change.
That feeling when you’ve finished a complete draft of a paper and feel good about it (as much as you can) 💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽. How I’ve done this during a pandemic, mass mobilizations and with 2 young kids and my grandma, I have no idea 🤷🏽♀️ But internally, I’m celebrating 🥳
I think I tweeted about this when it was published online first in 2018, but it's now in print. Check out my work on what I call the ethnographic toolkit and researchers' visible and invisible tools!

Positionality and reflexivity is a necessity in research. Now I also think what Ellen Kohl (
@kohl_ea
) & Priscilla McCutcheon (
@McCutcheonPR
) call "kitchen table reflexivity" is also necessary. Everyone, please read! Such an amazing methods piece
Billy died on 4/30 & since then felt this constant, nonstop need to throw up. It’s there in meetings, w my kids, always lurking within. I can’t think of him, our family or the situation wo bursting into tears. I’m filled to the brim w anger; my grief, a deep pit.
#FuckthePolice
@Theholisticpsyc
I love your tweets but this one places the labor of parenting on mothers. Couldn’t we say patriarchy devalues the role of parenting, not mothers entering the workforce?
Are you working w a team on coding? Conducting qualitative content analysis? Check out our (

) forthcoming paper "The Living Codebook" @ Sociological Methods & Research. It's not yet online, here's the accepted version
@socarxiv
Conducting or planning a qualitative research project? Teaching methods? Read my paper, online first, at Ethnography re: what I call the "ethnographic toolkit" & how researchers strategically & actively use their visible & invisible tools in field research
My advice on productivity: (1) institutions pay living wages, & provide good insurance & stable jobs, (2) senior university, dept & professional colleagues setting reasonable & realistic expectations, (3) climates of respect & compassion & (4) resources to do work

Ive tried to ignore certain ppl/tweets but spurred by a FB comment by an unnamed friend, I’ll just say that ppl who think the emancipatory arm is dominant bc of who ASA presidents have been lately, seem 2 forget what kind of scholarship is published in leading journals 1/
I've hit that wall. I am depleted and have no reservoir to draw on. Kids have not been in school since March. Looking at Fall 2021 for them to return.

Mentioned this on FB: 💯 I would not have written a set of essays that blend personal, critique and advice if it weren’t for the pandemic. I just sent it off to readers. I know some people may think less of me bc it’s not “real” Sociology. I’m both proud & terrified
Friendly reminder, abortion shouldn’t be stigmatized. I had an abortion in college. My life would be very diff if I didn’t. I had an abortion (D&C) for a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks while in grad school. I would have died if I didn’t. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk
Look who is now website official as the latest badass member of the GSST department and who the alphabet put right by me 🔥🔥🔥 so exciting
@victoriadreyes
💗💗💗
I was a proponent of stop the clock early in the pandemic but have come to agree w critics that it’s not the answer. Evaluative criteria need to change. The effects of COVID-19 will be long lasting wrt to research. Now is an opp 2 rethink and enact change 2 recog inequities
What’s the point of a COVID impact statement if you aren’t supposed to provide personal details regarding how COVID has impacted your research, teaching and service? (And also isn’t sent out to external reviewers as part of your tenure review)?
Attention Filipino Americans-what we are seeing (w/o same death tech) is similar to Philippines: US used similar scorched earth campaigns, murdering hundreds of thousands of Filipino civilians, concentration camps etc Filipinos had indep gov set up & "dared" to resist US empire
Have you ever written something you’re immensely proud of but afraid 2 share bc of how personal it is? Haven’t been able 2 focus on empirical work so writing essays that r a mix of personal, critique & advice. A little bit 2 go but ready 2 send 2 awesome readers 4 feedback 10/1
I can’t. I want to scream. & cry. While people are just going about their days. This is not only @ yesterday, tho it’s a big part of it. It’s my life & the reality of many WOC’s lives. Nothing changes. What does is mostly performative.
What I love @
#ASA2021
is a reminder of how big the discipline is. I think often, esp but not exclusively for grad students, the dept comes to mean sociology. But that’s not accurate. Why I love the section model. Finding people who value your work & whose work you value
#AcademicTwitter
I'm putting together a sociology reference list on the "Global South." I have a list and readings in mind, but also wanted see if anyone wanted to share their fave writings, both foundational & newer texts (feel free to recommend your own!).
Just visited where my new office will be and I already love it! The GSST floor has amazing art, particularly of Black women and other women of color, a huge window overlooking the sports field. Such a welcoming space ❤️🤗❤️🤗
It’s also funny how a paper that draws and builds on Black Feminist Thought and women of color feminisms is seen as “partisan” and “theoretical ponderous” 🤔👀
Book manuscript sent in for copy editing, after which it’ll go into production. Woo hoo! Be on the lookout for Global Borderlands: Fantasy, Violence and Empire in Subic Bay, Philippines next summer!
@stanfordpress
Talk about the stark differences among faculty working at different UCs. 😡👀 Meanwhile I live paycheck to paycheck and take in debt for expenses bc I went thru my startup funds paying for student research assistants, & my funds were a fraction of this freely given down payment
$100k toward buying a house as an incentive to work here? What? What!!!?!!!!!
Meanwhile we are short 760 staff positions and more cuts are on the horizon....
It’s a privilege to work with our wonderful graduate students here at
@UCRSociology
and I’m honored and humbled to be nominated by them, and selected to receive, our department’s 2019 Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Graduate Students Award!
I know I’m not saying anything many of you have said. I’m exhausted. Beyond burnt out. I want to curl in bed and for no one to want anything from me for 24hr. That’s all I want. But know I will not get 😢
Sometimes I feel like my work is not valued & I have nothing to say; this is not to get “you’re amazing!” responses but as a public comment @ what happens to ur confidence when working in a toxic & gaslighting environment. Like, reality - book forum etc - shows otherwise
@emanabdelhadi
I mean I respect(ed) & like(d) RG but her audacity newsletter has a lot of both sides ism & stresses the need to remember that while conflict began earlier, can’t forget Hamas attack on Oct 7 and that “Hamas refuses to change their strategy” - from 3 days ago

’s amazing leadership and vision for using the section’s surplus funds to make a difference in the lives of our incredible grad student (and postdoc) section members during COVID-19!
University bureaucracies and systems, smh. Can you imagine being in a dept where your colleagues vote no, that your “claim” that your promotion was delayed a year due to Covid is not valid 👀 Lucky to no longer be in a department where I had no idea how ppl would vote on that
When your daily stress, anxiety etc are high, and you just work thru it and deal with it bc you have to, sometimes one little thing can push you over the edge and make you want to curl up, sleep/cry/feel hopeless, like there’s no point…

Want to highlight a 2011 article we're discussing in my class today - "Ethics Beyond the IRB" by Blee & Currier. As qualitative scholars, we need to center ethics in all aspects of our research (quant scholars need to do this, too).
I may be odd but I enjoy grant writing when I’m in the early & middle stages of projects, even when I don’t get funded. It forces me to think of the weeds (details) for early projects & forces me out of the weeds to broader significance when in the middle-ish stage of a project.
What is longitudinal global ethnography? What’s relat betwn particularity & field theory? Can grounded theory be used 4 twitter? What @ “Big Qual” & abduction? Check out prerecorded session “New qualitative directions in classical approaches”!

This is the reality of empire. All you scholars of empire-this isn’t a sexy hot topic to jump on the bandwagon. It is the study of death, genocide, destruction of real people whose humanity is being denied. How can you look in the mirror or present or write while remaining silent
People should not have to tell their abortion stories (I have one) nor paint pictures of dire situations in order to convince ppl to support pro-choice, pro-reproductive rights and the right to have an abortion. Doesn’t matter the reason. Don’t tell us what to do with our bodies
A cover I love!! ❤️❤️❤️ This book is a game changer. Not necessarily in the content. But I think it will be one for my career - whether for good or for bad I’m not sure, but def a personal game changer in terms of my own vulnerability and thinking

What kind of research receives funding/awards & get people hired. & also has never been on receiving end of being told your work is not sociology, is not scientific and is actively discounted and dismissed.

Controversial thought: confidentially is often invoked to protect ppl in power from accountability because it keeps others from knowing what’s going on and is used to silence ppl who want to raise concerns. This is applicable for wide range of situations, from tenure & hiring etc
