My book has arrived!!!!!!! There are truly no words for this moment πππ My heart is so full β€οΈπ§‘ππππ Thank you to so many people for all the love and support. This book would have been impossible without so many of you. πππ
I canceled my students' final and just gave them all 100 on it. And I structured my winter classes around not having a final. I don't know, maybe we should just abandon the construct that is the final.
A bisexual white woman today voted against raising the minimum wage, which would benefit thousands (if not millions) of LGBTQ people, especially LGBTQ people of color.
Representation is not liberation.
STOP π TEACHING π THAT π SEX π IS π BIOLOGICAL π AND π GENDER π IS π SOCIAL π
Sex is also a social construct. We assign meaning to certain things - hormones, chromosomes, genitals - because of dominant gender ideologies. Read Sexing the Body.
Thank you!
The amount of accommodation letters I get from the disability center when I teach our 300 students intro class, Iβm like maybe we should just restructure academia to not be ableist?
On this first weekend of Pride 2021, I received news that I have been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure.
As a 1st gen, non-binary queer person who does research on queer and trans people and lives, I am forever aware of the impact of this moment.
β€οΈπ§‘ππππ
A lot of people who have literally no clue what professors do β let alone how academia operates β wielding way too much power over higher ed right now.
The large structural shift away from TT positions to contingent faculty positions as well as the now attack on tenure itself is deeply linked to more and more POC becoming professors.
HIRE ACADEMICS IN THE WRITERS ROOM FOR SHOWS ABOUT ACADEMICS πππ
Not Jameson just telling Camille that this grant will beef up her RESUME!!
RESUME?!?! π€‘π€‘π€‘

π¨ New Pub Alert π¨
"Beyond resilience: Resistance in the lives of LGBTQ youth" is officially out!
In this article, we question the use of resilience in research and call for a shift to focusing on resistance instead.
Obviously, a lockdown is needed. But you know what else is needed? Canceling rent. Saving small businesses. Giving people money and food. Free healthcare for all. Just to name a few.
π¨ Job Market / Please Share π¨
If anyone is applying to the UC President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, please feel free to reach out to me. I am a former postdoc. I can try to help and answer any questions. If we overlap in interests, I can now also mentor. Let's chat!

The first paper from the Family, Housing, and Me Project is officially out! And y'all, aunts are amazing!
Aunts are supporting their LGBTQ nibling, including providing housing support, and challenging cisheteronormativity.πππ
LOL I got an email that my Department Chair nominated me to be on some campus panel.
Dear reader, I am the Department Chair. I did not nominate myself.
It is like really official now,
@AmyLStone1
and I are getting 300k each from NSF to study the role of non-parental relatives in providing housing and support for LGBTQ youth! ππ₯³πΎ
A weird and awful thing about academia is you often have to go on the job market to get a substantial raise, but then the uni risks losing you, when they could just give people substantial raises and make them feel valued to begin with and not have to go on the market. π€‘π€‘π€‘
Universities love them a task force and a report. Wasting people's time and labor, as they never actually do anything afterwards.
Stop the task forces and the reports. Do something.
To even ask the question, "how many qualitative interviews do I need?" already upholds quantitative logics and leaves you engaging with positivistic epistemologies and methodologies on their terms.
So far, Columbia, Indiana University and Northwestern have all had admin bypass faculty committees to unilaterally change codes in order to suspend and ban protesters.

CALL FOR PAPERS: SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVES
SPECIAL ISSUE: A QUEER AND TRANS SOCIOLOGY
EDITORS:
@sgbuggs
AND ME!
EXTENDED ABSTRACTS DUE: JAN 15TH!
I am canceling my students' finals. These are awful times. I do not want to add to that harm nor proceed as if these times are normal. I want to practice the politics I teach.
I encourage you to use what little power you may have to make your students' lives better.
When an ASR editor desk rejected this piece because βwe believe the theoretical frame of the article is not sufficiently broad enough to appeal to a wide range of sociologists.β Welp, I guess it at least appeals to a general audience. π€‘π€‘π€‘
Researchers have found that aunts play a crucial role in supporting the well-being of their LGBTQ youth relatives, including preventing them from experiencing homelessness.
Y'all,
@AmyLStone1
and I just got another $400k NSF grant to extend
@FHAM_Project

We (

In case y'all missed it in your emails,
@ASAnews
is going to entirely remote conference every 3rd year starting in 2028. And all ASA-wide committee meetings will be virtual and not held at the annual meetings.
Important caveat in a footnote of the majority opinion that Roberts previewed in the oral argument: the ban on considering race in admissions does NOT apply to military academies.
As our Aunt paper seems to be making some media rounds (for which I am humbled and honored), I'd just like to say that I am happy to talk with any journalists, organizations, etc. about Aunts, LGBTQ Youth, and the larger Family, Housing, and Me Project. ππ³οΈββ§οΈπ

I still haven't fully gathered myself. But let me try to explain one way that the "opinion" out of Texas is terrifying and dangerous.
For me, this opinion is going to put on steroids the "queer control complex."
A threadπ§΅π§΅π§΅///
Pride month commemorates the Stonewall riots - riots against police brutality, state violence, and the criminalization of LGBTQ people. There is no queer and trans liberation without police and prison abolition. Happy Pride y'all. π
The struggle continues.
Week 3 of the strike begins tomorrow. Many UC students only had 7 weeks of classes this quarter and many will also prob get grade delays β which is prob where the collapse really happens. It is almost like the people striking are essential to the university! Who knew?!?!
Finland ended homelessness. They provide a small apartment and counseling with no preconditions. 4/5 make their way back into a stable life and guess what - it was CHEAPER than allowing homelessness to continue.

It is a pleasure to accept your manuscript entitled "THE NEW LAVENDER SCARE: Policing Gender, Sexuality, and LGBTQ Youth Homelessness in an Era of Hyperincarceration." for Gender & Society.
My number one job as a professor (and to me, the goal of a liberal arts education) is to build empathy within my students and with myself. And I will die on this hill.

Y'all,
@AmyLStone1
and I are drowning in
@FHAM_Project
data.
If there are any grad students interested in using the data (for thesis, dissertation, etc.), please reach out. Or if a professor, please let your grad students know!
We have qual and quant data.
I am honored and happy to announce that I am one of the recipients of the Early Career Award from the Sexualities Section of the American Sociological Association.
I also was elected to council (3-year term) to the same section last week. Thanks for the love and support. <3
Profs who take attendance (both before this pandemic and/or now during it), Why?
I've never taken attendance. I get paid the same whether students are there or not. But I get so many emails from stressed students when they can't make it, and I feel bad they feel this stress.
I tell my students all the time that universities are not going to get us anywhere close to liberation and indeed colleges maintain structures of oppression - and how universities have acted these past months make that case ever clearer.
Thinking today about how most papers that Iβve written are about discrimination, violence, inequality, etc. and that this paper may be one I love so dearly because of how positive it is πππ³οΈββ§οΈ
Sadly, most sociologists are not invested in imagining and creating and building a different world. They just like to study inequality for the sake of studying inequality.
I've had 3 students email me in the past 24 hours trying to get into my full classes. We desperately need more queer and trans scholars and classes at
@UCRiverside

LOL Gaetz is supposedly going to change his vote and vote YES on round 15 tonight after he called McCarthy a squatter and other shit all week.

Today is *the* official release date of Coming Out to the Streets (

Around half my department is faculty who transferred from racist/sexist departments at UCR. Instead of admin addressing the racism and sexism in so many depts on campus, this is apparently their "solution."
A thing I have learned from serving on diss committees (and that I am sure I was guilty of as a grad student) is that students want to do WAY TOO MUCH for their diss project.
Focus, reel it in, you have a body that can only do so much, and you can do more later or others can.
Sociologists must live in real nice neighborhoods and houses cause all their comments and tweets about poverty in LA has been real interesting to hear and see.
@H_Wohl
I don't teach a class, but all students I mentor and supervise, I have them read the coding chapter of Charmaz's Constructing Grounded Theory and read this article:
I have officially coded ALL 48 interviews with trans women and femmes on their dating, hookup, and sex lives.
Now to really start writing "Trans Freedom: Gender Liberation and Other Pleasurable Possibilities."
BREAKING: A federal court permanently blocked an Arkansas law that would have banned gender-affirming care for transgender youth, finding the law violates the constitutional rights of transgender youth, their parents, and their medical providers.
I can't believe people are out here making trailers for their courses. Like how much are y'all getting paid? Cause EYE am not getting paid nearly enough to be doing ALL that.
