Finished the first two episodes of Bad Boy Billionaires and feel rage at the financial institutions more than anything. It’s also a good reminder that if we had proper bankruptcy laws in place a lot of this could have been avoided. Business failures can and should be normalised.

This lovely photo, I learn, has a rich history. It was taken at the Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, in 1949 by the Institute photographer, VK Sharma - and belongs now to the personal collection of @Ram_Guha , whose father and grandfather were both scientists at the FRI!

America’s National Parks are amazing - I have now been to four! When I first moved to the US and knew nothing about them, I was amazed by the contradiction between what I thought of (and is) a massively capitalist society and the conservationist ideology the Parks represent.

First-hand experience 👋🏽When I was doing my M.Phil, I would *always* get asked why I was interested in studying the Middle East. Often by white folks who were ... studying the Middle East. Control over knowledge production by former imperial/colonial types is still very strong.

The movie to beat right now is Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani, the story of two cut-throat TV journalists jostling to get higher TRPs for their coverage of a sordid murder. The movie flopped because it was perceived to be too outlandish in 2000; 20 years later here we are.

Indians in US are overwhelmingly well-educated and upper caste. Despite inherited privilege, they have fashioned an American success story of struggling against the odds to achieve their status. This case suggests the need for a healthy dose of skepticism.

The city’s public library is still heavily used. It gave me so much joy to see parents come with their children to check out books. It was also a sad reminder of how public spaces in so many of our other cities have utterly shrivelled up. (9)
