Data recorded this evening has arrived in Reykjavík. Our #seismic station SVAR has had a rough day. Zoom shows one of the most strongly felt #earthquakes where we were watching from at @Haskoli_Islands , with around 15 seconds(!!) of clanging end to end. Astonishingly intense.

Since the #eruption began, the #earthquakes have moreorless stopped, and been replaced by seismic tremor. This is the incoherent background “hum” caused both by magma moving beneath the ground and venting at the surface - seen mainly at higher frequency (blue & green 2nd plot).

Beautiful plot from Egill - this zoomed in view explains the different appearances of intense seismicity (spiky! -- started at arrow #1 ) and eruption tremor (smooth, sustained high amplitudes -- started at arrow #2 ) Plot: c/o @Vedurstofan

🌋The new #Fagradalsfjall eruption started rather quietly at 13:18 ca. according to a tremor plot from our @naspmon @isor_iceland seismic station FAF, which is at ~2 km distance from the eruptive fissure. The spikes are larger magnitude #earthquakes . Plot © @Vedurstofan .

Today's challenges were different.. 0.5m of snow makes installing seismometers difficult! ❄❄Nevermind driving and hiking.. but overall we installed 3 of the 4 planned, and made it out safely. Thanks to @SEIS_UK for getting the kit together so quickly! @EarthSciCam @CamVolcSeis

Today we were working in #Reykjanes . Lunch at LAMB (overlooking lake Kleifarvatn), a battery swap at Hellur (station code HELL! 🔥), and a more serious power overhaul at VATN, which has been struggling in the fog. Sadly the eruption was still on pause.. @Conor__Bacon @EarthSciCam

#Askja still going up! 🌋📈 (and I can confirm the weather deterioration first hand - amazing that InSAR can still see through so much snow ❄)

The uplift in #Askja is still ongoing with a roughly constant rate. This is a #Sentinel1 interferogram (Jul 31 – Sep 23) showing ~12 cm of range decrease signal. The coherence in the last days decreased suggesting that the weather got worse.

We are excited to analyse the data it has recorded during the last few days. Map shows it’s position directly above the dike-induced earthquakes located by the @naspmon team. Deployment supported by a @BritGeoSurvey grant to @seiesme ! Live webcam here:
