Significant likelihood of a volcanic eruption in the coming days. Models show a 15-km long magma intrusion, located just northwest of Grindavík. A hazard area has been defined based on the location of the dike, as shown in the map.
The size of the volcanic eruption at Sundhnúksgígar is diminishing. The lava flow is estimated to be about one-quarter of what it was at the beginning of the eruption on 18 December, and a third of the original fissure is active.
A volcanic eruption started this evening at 20:45 near Fagradalsfjall in Geldingadalur. The eruption is considered small at this stage and the eruptive fissure is app. 500 m long. The magma area is app. 1km2. Lava fountains are small.

Yesterday afternoon an earthquake swarm started NE of Geldingadalir. Over 1100 earthquakes have been automatically detected since then. The largest earthquake was a M4.2 at 04:24 and was felt in SW Iceland. Two earthquakes of M3.8 occurred at 02:51 and 04:55.
2/3 Currently the extent of the lava field is within Geldingadalur, if the
