@Rochelle @KClarkWx @komonews @MountRainierNPS Mount Rainier is not erupting - the sort of behavior seen in this video is not unusual. And in fact there are a number of USGS volcanologists at the volcano this week working on installing new monitoring equipment, so Cascades Volcano Observatory folks are on site to confirm!

Spotted yesterday at #MaunaLoa – a lava boat rides the waves! On Dec 7, a lava boat was spotted floating down channel. Lava boats can form when portions of the cone or lava channel break away & are rafted downstream. Hot lava cools to its surface to create that smooth exterior.

@jayfurr @JimGriffith_SV @DrFunkySpoon Erm...we're going to have to say no, that's not safe. (Please don't try!) If the vent is emitting a lot of SO2 or H2S, they would taste BAD. And if you add sulfuric acid (in vog, for example) to sugar, you get a pretty spectacular reaction.

#43YearsAgo at #MountStHelens : May 18, 1980 Bulge fails as clossal landslides. Magma & hot fluids explode, surge outward like hot hurricane. Column rises, ash falling. Hummocky debris flow buries valley. Snowpack melts, mudflows converge. 9-hr eruption. Everything is changed.

Geochemical results from first 48 hours of Mauna Loa eruption: > glassy near vent > small crystals of plagioclase and olivine at flow front as lava cools > 6-6.8% MgO > eruption temp 1156 C (2113 F) > similar to past lava compositions > no leftover lava from 1984 is apparent

#Kilauea2020 #Lava cascades from a vent in the wall of #Halema ʻumaʻu around midnight on Dec 20. The water lake has boiled away and 3 vents are generating lava flows that are contributing to a growing lava lake. Eruption is confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater ( #K īlauea's summit).

#43YearsAgo at #MountStHelens : May 18, 1980 7 AM check with Coldwater II. “What’s it like up there, Dave?” “Very nice, totally clear” says Johnston. He's been up since 5:50 AM, making measurements, tracking the bulge. Data transmitted to Vancouver. No appreciable change in rate.

Change is a given -- especially at volcanoes. The passage of just over three weeks saw fire change to ice at the summit of Mauna Loa! As the calendar changes from 2022 to 2023, USGSVolcanoes wishes everyone a happy and healthy new year!

A debris flow in Mount St. Helens' South Coldwater Creek at 8:45 PM on May 14 destroyed a SR 504 bridge and cut off access & power to Johnston Ridge Observatory. The event was caught on seismic data at nearby stations and may have been linked to several days of warm weather. 1/3

#Kilauea summit eruption continues. #HVO gas geochemists were able to collect SO2 emission rate data this morning. Preliminary results indicate 65,000 tonnes/day SO2, similar to the onsets of previous summit eruptions in 2020 and 2021. As downwind residents know, this means vog.
