The eruption that started at #Meradalir in #Reykjanes #Iceland today is 5-10x larger from a magma flow perspective than last year's eruption. The flow is estimated to be 20-50 m3/sek and the fissure is around 300m long. This eruption is North of the 2021 eruption area.

50 years ago, at 2:00am a volcanic #eruption started on the island of #Heimaey , on the south coast of #Iceland . A 300m long fissure eruption opened up and quickly extended to around 2km in length with 50-150m high lava fountains - crossing the island from one shore to the other.

Magma is building up under #Askja #volcano in North-Eastern #Iceland . Currently no seismic activity recorded in the area. It last erupted in 1961, with an eruption that lasted 6 weeks. In 1875 it had an explosive eruption, often credited with causing emigration to N.America.

1/2 Þórólfur hefur gefið upp að við getum ekki lengur stöðvað faraldurinn. En við þurfum að hægja á honum til þess að spítalinn hafi undan. Þar vantar 200 manns í störf. Hjúkrunarfræðingar illa borgaðir og fá ekki að semja. 2000 heilbrigðisstarfsfólk flúið land undanfarin 10 ár.

This "pulsating" behavior is defined by 3-5 minute periods of inactivity and then 7-10 minute periods of heightened activity where the magma is shot up in the air 2-300 meters high, making it visible from far away, including #Reykjavik .

The #eruption in #Fagradalsfjall is not expected to cause serious problems for air traffic since eruption in that area do not produce as much ash as eruptions under glaciers. The @kefairport and #Reykjavik airport are temporarily closed per protocol. #icerupt

Potential glacial outburst starting in #Grimsvotn based on icecap dropping suddenly according to instruments say scientists at @Vedurstofan . Some outbursts there lead to #volcanic #eruptions but no evidence either way. Last eruption was in 2011. #Iceland
