Pinning this for the flood of “Iran wants Niger’s uranium” stories over the coming months. This whole conspiracy theory was concocted by the US gov in a hamfisted attempt to intimidate the Nigerien coup leaders between Dec 2023 & 17 March 2024. While it first saw light in…
It’s always incredible that by the 1990s the US political class essentially barred Biden from Presidential aspirations after two runs where he was famously found out as an amoral rightwinger and inveterate liar, but Obama washed that all away & we pretended it had never happened.

When an academic historian says something like this, it’s because they’re declaring they do not wish to know the answers to these questions, and wishes you to believe these well trod subjects are unfathomable mysteries.
I am also genuinely curious as to when Palestine became a distinct national identity as opposed to "Arab Muslims living in this particular part of the Ottoman Empire"

This is such an important point. French colonialism in West Africa was a continual process of attempting to transplant certain production needed by the metropole (or other colonies) but not grown sufficiently in France. They tried everything imaginable & only a few worked at all.
Walter Rodney says in this lecture that the products Africa trades in internationally are products that have been assigned to Africa not products Africans chose to trade in. The minerals, cocao, coffee, cotton, etc., have all been assigned not chosen.
I can tell you all one thing. When the Rhodesia or French Algeria moment finally comes for the Israeli state—should they fail to compromise with reality as South Africa did—many of the people who watched all this repression over decades will feel little sympathy.

Trivia: Ethiopian Queen Woyzaro Terunesh's wedding dress was plundered by invading British in the 1860s & was displayed in the British Museum, where it was studied by Dutch Vlisco designers. It became the source for the 1960s “Angelina”, later named for a 70s Ghanaian pop song

The idea that France or the US is staging coups in West Africa is predicated on the belief that governments in these states are threats to their imperial interests.

This argument relies on straw men and dodges the key criticism: progressive bourgeois reforms and the politicians who win them—especially when one must dig deeply for a list of ‘wins’—are not a path to socialism.
