My wife is Brazilian, my children are half Irish/half Brazilian and it broke my heart when Ingrid said to me last night, “They don’t want us here”.
And then a surge of indignant pride when it was discovered that it was a Brazilian, Caio Benicio, who stopped the attack 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
There are around 70,000 Brazilians living in Ireland, one of our largest communities. They contribute enormously to our national life. It’s essential that the murder of Bruna in Cork must outrage us just as much as the murder of an Irish person. She was one of us 🇧🇷 🇮🇪
This is the new Pret a Manger, about to open on Dawson St. The gov celebrates companies like this setting up in Ireland. But we should be resisting the homogenisation of our cities. These chains squeeze indies out. London has been destroyed by this crowd on every street corner.
I was in Dundrum Shopping Centre on Saturday and it was packed, haven't seen crowds like it since Feb 2020. Yet no one complains. All people are interested in is South William St. This isn't about Covid, it's a puritanical attempt to vilify people who enjoy drinking.
The history of Irish ice pops, a thread:
The Wibbly Wobbly Wonder was launched by HB in Dublin in 1974 as a cost saving measure, because half of it was made up of jelly which was cheap to make. It cost just 3 pence. 1/5
Today is the day when the US celebrates its independence from Britain. But why don't we do the same in Ireland? April 18th 1949 was the day when huge crowds gathered on O'Connell Bridge as a 21 gun salute marked Ireland becoming a republic. This should be a national holiday
Thinking of Ann McHugh today. She was at her desk in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on this day in 2001. She was from Tuam, Co. Galway and was due to be married two months later.
Ann was one of the 18 Irish citizens who lost their lives that day.
I really feel for all the children on that bus arriving at the Racket Hall Hotel in Roscrea this afternoon.
Being a small boy or girl, seeking international protection, confused & scared as a group of people shout at them with signs telling them they're not welcome. Awful.
CNN now reporting that one of the 6 confirmed members of the jury in Trump's trial is from Ireland and that he has has been named foreman.
Big day for the parish 🇮🇪 🇺🇸
The momification of Ireland is well underway...
I've noticed the word 'mom' creeping into the Irish vernacular over the past few years. Is this coming from movies? Social media...where? It's a dreadful Americanism that needs to be resisted.
For every tooth I lost as a youngster, the tooth fairy delivered a 20 pence coin under my pillow. Shiny, golden and engraved with a beautiful horse, this was a BIG treat. But I'm curious to know the tooth fairy's rate of inflation. How much does she deliver nowadays?
To get a sense of the epic longevity of Angela Lansbury's career, consider this:
In the 1961 movie Blue Hawaii, she played Elvis' MOTHER. Elvis passed away 45 years ago.

My best man is currently arranging my stag night. He asked me what I want to do. My response: a few pints somewhere.
BUT, I'm astonished that there's still lads organising foreign stags, weekends away etc...like it's 2007. It's a bit of an ask, no?
I don't get Dry January. There's a puritanical streak in Irish society [Eg. excessive Covid pub closures]. Dry Jan is a form of self-flagellation, a hangover from our collective Catholic guilt. It's ok to go mental over Xmas and enjoy January too 🍻 No one's going to punish you
Enoch Burke has spent 200 days + in prison
By my calculations, this represents a €46,236 cost to the tax payer. A full year in prison is €84,067 and 200 days is 55% of this
We need a house arrest system in Ireland, where offenders are contained at little cost to taxpayers
The Book of Kells is the most significant cultural asset in Ireland. But Trinners do not own it. The Bishop of Meath lent it to Trinity in 1661, to keep it 'safe'. The National Museum is well up to the job of keeping it safe now thanks, then we can all see it for free
What disturbs me most about the video of the Irish team chanting "Up the Ra" is that these women are all too young to have lived through or even remember the IRA's crimes. What has gone so horribly wrong that this disgusting chant has been passed on to the next generation?
The Cornetto arrived in Ireland in '76, having been invented in Naples after some genius discovered that if he coated the inside of a cone with oil the ice cream didn't soak through and make it soggy. It was the world's first pre-packaged ice cream cone. A revolution was born 4/5

One thing dads miss out on now in the delivery ward is getting to cut the umbilical cord.
When my daughter was born I asked the midwife if I could do it & she said they don't allow it anymore because some other dad had accidentally snipped off the top of his son's mickey.
As an atheist, I find it deeply insulting that midnight mass is allowed while theatres have to close at 8pm.
For us non-believers, mass is a performance with an audience, and should not be granted an exception.
The HB Choc Ice is one of the oldest ice creams in Ireland, going back to at least the 1940s, judging from my own research anyway. This is an ad for it in the Irish Press in 1955... 5/5

The Golly Bar was launched exclusively in Ireland in 1957, using a derogatory term to sell a rectangle of vanilla ice cream on a stick. The offending image was removed in 1992 and the name later changed to Giant Bar 2/5
The entire success of the Late Late Show is founded on dealing with 'sensitive issues'. Terry Keane in '99, Sinead O'Connor as a priest, Gaybo opening a condom on live TV, Annie Murphy in '94, you name it...
When the Late Late shies away from particular topics then it's finished

The Tangle Twister launched in Ireland in 1982, first marketed as 'Tongue Twister' before changing its name. The 'Nogger' was launched in the same year, but its name was very soon rebranded as Feast, still popular now of course 3/5
The thing I don't understand about Conor McGregor's priceless new tracksuit is the current trend for grown men to dress like boys. Are tracksuits, outside of childhood, not to be worn exclusively for exercise? These sorts of clothes infantilise and emasculate men.

I just ate my first vegan burger. It was disgusting. The patty had the look and texture of raw minced meat. I don't understand why vegan food tries to imitate non-vegan food. Why can't it just be honest vegetable/grain/pulse etc? I'd happily eat burgers made with identifiable veg

For me this underlines the guiding principle the series has had for the 6 years that it's been on air:
Everything has a history.
Right, I've done an analysis of Christmas chocolate tins. They all look & cost the same, but...
Roses:600g
Heroes:600g
Quality Street:629g
Celebrations:650g
Each 'Rose' is 9 grams. Cadbury would need to put 5 extra in the tin to make the same weight as Nestle's Celebrations

The Swiss environment minister has suggested people shower together in order to reduce energy bills. Take that, Eamon Ryan!
For inspiration, let's turn to Hollywood's steamiest shower & bath scenes: First up, Fifty Shades [wasteful, too much sex & not enough washing]
After five Irish actors went home empty-handed last year, Cillian Murphy's role in Oppenheimer made him the first of his countrymen to win an Academy Award.
1000s of people will go to Xmas Day mass on Sunday, even tho they don't normally go
These are people who are horrified by historic church abuse, sick of the church's control of our schools & fed up with its systemic misogyny & homophobia
So why legitimise it by going to mass?

The outrage over the €60k salary for the Fair City photographer is yet another example of how we undervalue the arts sector in Ireland.

For too long in Ireland, contraception has been treated as the responsibility of the woman. The government's free contraception scheme perpetuates this idea.
Vasectomies should be provided free of charge, as part of the scheme.

It was this month in 1987 that Tina Turner played her first ever show in Ireland.

Most other countries mark their Independence Day, yet we continue to not bother and instead have continued down the religious route, making St. Brigid's Day a bank hol instead.
Surely it's time to make Dec 6th [Free State] or April 18th [Enactment of the Republic] a bank hol?
