As a black child growing up here it was hard to see the images on the TV of black people being so violently brutalised by white people in South Africa. I remember being absolutely terrified as I never felt as displaced as when I would see those people treated like animals.

I used to panic when I was told to ‘go back to Africa’ cause to me that’s what Africa was. I didn’t see the point in leaving a place where I was being abused to a place where I would be treated like that. We saw black children like us attacked. It was genuinely terrifying.
