Hello everyone in English education circles. Why did they let
#MichaelWilshaw
out of his box to pontificate about
#OFSTED
? Pls do remember his previous comments. Never forget.
I’ve already suggested this but now offer it as my challenge for you. Using google maps or google earth, find the letters of the alphabet. It’s great fun and is best done in a pair or a group. Print screen and crop before assembling them all!
I’d like to thank the art teachers, headteachers,
@NSEAD1
, the networks such as
@NEATENart
(and others), who have defended and promoted visual art education throughout nine long years of changes and threats- some of which still exist. Plus the percentages need a slight edit!

Bought a bird of paradise plant at Madeira airport 5 years ago. It’s stood in a pot doing very little since, and never flowered until..... THIS WEEK! Oh folks, this has to be a symbol of hope. What a beauty. Enjoy. I am. 🤗
Delighted to share that, from January 2022, I have been appointed visiting “Professor of Education Through Art” @ the Faculty of Arts/Creative Industries
@sunderlanduni
and I promise to do a good job. Art education is at the core of what I am.

Share if you agree?”All learners are entitled to an art education that deeply connects them to their world, to their cultural history. It creates openings and horizons for them to new ways of seeing, thinking, doing and being” I do. I agree wholeheartedly

@Andriazaf
thank you for an important, relevant, true statement about the

of the arts. We want the world to know this, and you carry that message magnificently through your day to day work. 🤗

20 years ago this week, I took some of my y11 art club to Venice for the day. No kidding. We flew from Teeside Airport at 6 am and were back for 10 pm. Memorable day forever for them and me. Sometimes when people tell you something can’t be done, that’s the reason for doing it!
Gee whizz but how did this rather quick tweet image get 43k views? How nice to see
#art
being a viral topic! Thanks for sharing everyone. I mean that.

So the last time I facilitated the Durham primary art network there were 12 people there. Tomorrow it’s fully booked, in a room for 60. Is this the effect of
#OFSTED
changes. Is art getting more recognition in schools? 🤞🏻🤞🏽🤞
Teachers of Art in England have waited a long time to hear this
@educationgovuk
but at least they can now plan for 2022. Recognition of student mixed access to art materials at home in pandemic is important.Pls share educators.

Dreadful headlines. Whatever happened to just doing what you love? Whatever happened to just job satisfaction? Whatever happened to just being happy?

After staring at Turner’s sketchbooks last week I’m now fascinated by the pages drawn by Frida Khalo. Like my own teenage sketchbook pages, drawing is often thinking out loud, but for your own privacy and purpose.
Today I met one of my ex pupils, who went straight from her Textiles degree into working in print design and who has been happily creating for a decade. Art makes you happy and can give you a job you love. Well done Laura. x
Please do share this. Essential reading-as we may feel forced into going into entirely the wrong direction. Human beings don’t thrive on a narrow diet of life and experiences, the arts bring a realisation of what it is to be be human.
@NSEAD1
@InSEA_Blog
Teachers, non teaching staff, and school leaders- please head home later today knowing that so many of us want to thank you for educating, nurturing, caring for, and looking out for our young people, tomorrow’s citizens, those who are the future. You have been magnificent.
I shared this again at last night’s
@accessart
event. It’s pinned up above my desk. It’s Toni Morrison. It moves me and it totally inspires me. At times like this, well.... it’s when an artist gets to work.....get after that light.
Looking at Turner’s sketchbooks today with fresh eyes after just flicking through previously. Fascinating collection.

I’ve been more interested since a visit to Margate!

One of my former Biddick School secondary students, now a mother of 3, wrote this during the week. It says more than I can say. The Barbie punk dolls were one of my projects so maybe a forecast of expression and activism eh

Just a reminder. The OAK academy is neither free nor independent. The SOS for Education is the sole shareholder. It’s costing the tax payer considerably. . 43 million pounds to be precise.
For all the SLT who are asking art teachers to check and correct spellings in sketch books etc- may we art educators please critique other subjects and their use of visual literacy? I can’t wait to get my hands on SLT presentations at CPD sessions.Just invite me in. Yey!
So very proud of our many art teachers who have got the best from their students at GCSE, after working in non art rooms, kids working at home without a range of equipment, bubbles bursting, and so many uncertainties. Please raise a glass to them all tonight, I will.
I am very pleased and proud to have been elected to serve a second term of office on the World Council of the International Society for Education through Art
@InSEA_Blog
and to be one of three European representatives. Art Education is a powerful tool in the life of all learners.
@MsCBristow
This is a very individual response which I love. Like MC Escher’s eye it shows that the eye is THE window to everything. It’s brilliant (and I do happen to know what I’m talking about). Escher saw the future.This shows the now. Well done. You mirror reality.
I love Jim Dine’s work, so am finishing my tweet week with one of his drawings. Just because I love it. If you have disengaged pr underachieving boys in your art class, inspire them with Jim.
Visual Literacy exploration with Durham Primary Art teachers later. They have to bring an image of their “favourite” piece of art. What’s yours and why? Tough call. I struggle to name just one. I’m pretty fond of this. “Cold Dark Matter” Cornelia Parker.
What utter tosh! What about the House of Commons being a quiet and calm space where people listened, debated sensibly, were polite and well mannered instead? This is a ridiculous statement about schools. Politicians live in an alternative universe.
Happy Christmas holiday to all the hard working art educators out there, that I meet and work with, and talk to online. This is your time to have a holiday. You’ve well and truly earned it.

One of the reasons we decided to offer a primary CPD on
#drawing
is to show teachers that drawing should be for purpose. This excellent article by Eileen Adams explains it all.

For over twenty years. I never had a single problem. When I was bed ridden with awful flu, the Music teacher walked my form group to my house and they sang Christmas Carols outside the window.
This was a photo post from me in 2020 and now again in 2021. Written by a 13 year old boy in one of my school workshops. It says a lot more than I can.

HELLO art educators- you might have missed this in November- so sit back and enjoy this fantastic presentation from our recent APPG Art Craft Design by Dr Fay Penrose why visual/tactile literacy and manual dexterity skills are important in Science @ HE.
So after yesterday’s interesting thread on looking at art. Here’s a good question for today, as a child yourself, what was the first piece of art you remember that made impact on you. My mother had this on the wall of her bedroom and I loved it. We didn’t know it was Durer tho’!

Over 50s teachers remember the good times, Local Authority support, autonomy with teaching, robust national curriculums, better funding, and more. Probs why they are going but also, IMHO, many are being pushed out by the current regimes in DFE favoured academies etc.
Today I make my first visit to
@sunderlanduni
as visiting Professor for Education through Art.This is my topic and this is the flag I will wave for being a teacher of art. It’s the best job in the world, when you can shut the door on bureaucracy and just

When I first went to secondary school the art room was my safe place. I felt such a sense of warmth and belonging there.I think that any space for making art these days is like that.We owe it to children to have that time to think and make, as well as all the other things.
“We would like to invite you to an international Art Education virtual conference” and how can you resist this? Free. Global. October. Why not present?
So... are you an artist or a teacher?Or are you both? Join me for a discussion with a wonderful team of art teachers who will share their own stories. With

Joyful tonight to hear from speakers that sketchbooks in primary schools belong to each young artist and are a thinking space for reflection, which doesn’t need you writing in them like an exercise book. There you have it! Would we write all over Charlotte Bronte’s book? 🤔
In 2020 we shall re-form the All Party Parliamentary Group for Art Craft Design Education, with the continued and important support of

What? Catch up on what? They’ve had their whole turned upside down. The curriculum has to be about recovery, about mental health and well being, not their bloody times tables and spelling tests. Also, when might teachers do this in Boris? Sundays? Yep.

In 2016 my other half bought this “bird of paradise” plant in Madeira airport. It flowered only once - in 2021. We’ve brought it inside for this cold winter and hey ho….. it’s about to open once more. Nature keeps on giving. Isn’t that just gorgeous? Colours and shape.
Are you an art teacher- primary or secondary or FE? Will you PLEASE help me and the All Party Parliamentary Group for Art Craft Design Education? Can you find just FIVE a minutes to fill in this essential survey? We need you. I need you. Thank you.
Art and Arts Educators- Keir Starmer today 'We will update the ‘progress eight’ performance measure, and we will use it to get children studying a creative arts subject, or sport, until they are 16.' This is the very best news. Share!

I’ve discover my sketchbooks from when I was 18. I went to a convent school and the nuns didn’t really want me to go to art college. HT wouldn’t give me a reference! I found this little idea for a comic I was going to draw. Page from my”hymn” book. I never did turn back. 😂🤣😂🤣
Absolutely amazed to have well over 200 primary art leads at our Sketchbook online session tonight. I’m honoured to work with the very best people-

and hope that our mission to improve art ed in schools will have impact with our participants!
It’s been a long and successful day. Meeting with colleagues and new friends to champion art and design education. Fantastic support from MPs. I’m a bit tired now but I’m happy.
