That’s it for 2020. 22 matches played over 8 weekends since the end of October on a natural turf pitch. Yes the pitch is tired but my staff have literally done everything they can to get it through this unique
@officialgaa
championship. Thanks to all the teams for their support!!
We enjoy a challenge & after 23 matches over 10 weeks through Nov, Dec, Jan we had from the 29th Jan-26th Feb to carry out major works and recover the Croke Park pitch. Pics show 4 weeks ago after maintenance works & then today. Still a bit to go but great work from the team
#GAA
We are all set
@CrokePark
Well done to all of my team over the past couple of months to get the pitch in such good condition for the start of the season.
In Jan I celebrated 10 years
@CrokePark
where my role has grown to overseeing the
@GAAngdc
and Turf Farm. I’m proud of how we have come through the huge challenges with planning and teamwork. I love what I do and couldn’t do it without the support of my family

Thank you to the volunteers who help out on match days working on the pitch. With such a busy schedule, your help throughout the season is really appreciated. Also a huge thanks to my team of 6 working tirelessly looking after Croke Park NGDC & Turf Farm doing a fantastic job
I can’t thank this group enough for their amazing work this week, their professionalism & how they conduct themselves as people. We are set challenges, we discuss them and work out the best plan to produce a playing surface that
@CrokePark
will be proud of no matter what sport.
Ed Sheeran concert with the pitch covered in steel for 2 weeks & 14 days to get the pitch replaced from our home grown turf farm for the Leinster football semi’s. A huge challenge but with planning and team work it has all come together. Series of photos literally says it all…..
A huge thank you to all of the match day volunteers who help us maintain the pitch throughout the season of over 70 matches.

@CrokePark
A very busy year of amazing events and matches complete in this fantastic stadium. Just under 600 hours of usage in 2018 so time for some well earned rest and recovery through Dec and Jan before the new season starts in Feb. Great work by everyone involved.
Pitch ready for the

Joe McDonagh cup final
@TurfCare_IRL_UK
liquid nutrition working nicely along with fantastic attention to detail from the team. Good luck to

@Offaly_GAA
The work will continue tonight and tomorrow morning ready for 2 more big matches
Managing 3 veunes with all year use of matches, Go Games, concerts, re-turfs, turf for clubs, renovations etc, you rely on support & good quality grass species….
@KEITH_BOLAND77
has always found the best & cleanest rye seed cultivar mixes for years with great results

After 4 senior football matches last weekend followed by 4 days of non stop Go Games, the pitch team have worked their socks off
@CrokePark
for 2 days to turn the pitch around for the
@LadiesFootball
league finals today. Best of luck to all 4 teams today.
We’ve almost reached the shortest day and this is as good as it gets when it comes to natural light on the pitch. The prep work continues though setting up for another 4 big finals this weekend in Croke Park
@LadiesFootball
@OfficialCamogie
Stunning morning for a first app of growth regulator (Attraxor) at the turf farm. All turf has has come through the winter really well and no fungicides applied...
Our
@TurfCare_IRL_UK
liquid nutrition and surfactant plan producing excellent results after a very long & wet winter along with lots of great fixtures and events. Density the best I’ve seen it for the start of March so in a good place going into an exceptionally busy year ahead!!
It’s been a crazy week with some long shifts - semi finals at the NGDC Friday night, 2 days harvesting more turf for clubs, over 30mm rain going into Sat/Sun x 4 fixtures in the stadium but we’ve managed to get there & got a break this morning with the weather for todays matches!
Anyone would think there is a big match happening this weekend…the detail my team go to ensuring everything is as perfect as it can be. My deputy Colm Daly taking the flags home and washing them

@officialgaa
A tough weeks weather to contend with and still more to come but the pitch is in good shape and all set
@CrokePark
for a busy weekend of
@AIB_GAA
club championship finals
@officialgaa
Over 30mm of rain yesterday building up to 5 matches this weekend with more today but the pitch played well considering. Huge thanks to all the teams today for respecting the warm up protocols which is a massive help!!

The waiting game…….As the sun came up the leaf has frozen but at this time of year we are in full shade so the thaw is slow. Sometimes you can’t beat nature!! 🥶
#matchday
@officialgaa
About as good as it gets at this time of year……No light energy so very little recovery if any at all, especially with these temperatures but the matches keep coming thick and fast every weekend so we are doing the best we can. 4 more big games this weekend!!
Couldn’t be any more proud of this young man standing up at
#GAAcongress
presenting on ‘The Importance Of The Grounds Person’. Sean joined my team just over a year ago & has already developed into an outstanding groundsman, has unbelievable passion & a fantastic future. Well done
That’s about as good as it gets and it’s only going to get worse over the next few weeks. ☀️ Light energy grows grass!!! At least it’s a break from the never ending rain at the moment 🌨💨⛈
Nice little break with the family in the south of Ireland where I received my certificate of naturalisation to become an Irish citizen. Popped into Goldcrop to take a look at their seed trials which are great and had to take a look at the fantastic new Pairc Ui Chaoimh pitch
It’s been a pleasure supporting some other venues around the country over the past couple of months but it’s now time for a busy season ahead of huge matches & events in HQ, NGDC and Turf Farm. 6 dedicated staff working so hard to produce the best possible playing surfaces

Chilly but beautiful morning for a light rake and clean up before seeding. High usage levels being managed superbly at the

Such an effective way to drain a green and then back in play within 24/48 hours. Hopefully someone will embrace this concept in Ireland soon

Pitches/ground staff cannot cope with the usage levels. More pitches needed & higher spec pitches at county level. These weather patterns are here to stay so something needs to done to help the situation & provide the players with top quality playing surfaces all year round.
Very good article. Sometimes just some simple advice on what type of boot to wear in certain conditions to help with traction. See it time after time the wrong boots worn in sport and then the pitch gets the blame.
Key factor in injury risk = choice of footwear, depending on weather and pitch.
@AtholThomson
has done some excellent research on this and says players need more info in order to make better choices...
Excellent scientifically backed research carried out by
@OceanKnowledge2
on rye grass and also
@ICL_Turf
on sports pitch renovations that gave us that little more confidence and certainly helped grow a pitch from seed in the space of 4 weeks through February!!!
Too many people to thank but in all the years I’ve been in the sports turf industry I think this was one the most inspiring trips. Thank you to
@SGLsystem
@johnledwidge
@DarrenBaldwin40
@WayneBilling
and all their teams. The attention to detail is just exceptional!!!!
Really highlights the pressure put on GAA groundmen. Old pitch constructions with limited drainage and massive usage yet they continue to produce a playable and good quality pitch. Imagine what they could do with more modern, hybrid constructions……
Tough week this week. 65mm of rain in Thurles since Tuesday. Pitch took a good hammering so fingers crossed for some sort of a change to come. Fun times in this job.

Who said Gaelic Games can’t be played on stitched pitches 🤔 Beginning of Feb and a fast brilliant game between Cork and Tipp..more pitches needed like this. Well done to

O’Connor Park pitch
@Offaly_GAA
looking fantastic on the rte news tonight.

a volunteer who gives his life and soul to the pitch doing a professional job. Well done Jim and team!!! Let’s hope you’ll see some action on it soon.
Interested to see rainfall totals at sports grounds/clubs over the past 48 hours. Satellite over the UK has been shocking and rainfall moving so slowly. It’s now made its way into Ireland but still going in some parts of the UK. Big challenge for anyone involved in sports turf!!
If we covered the whole of the Croke Park pitch, one of the largest playing surfaces in the world, we would require 32 grow lights!!! We can all dream 😃
#TB
to a very special project: one year ago
@wembleystadium
temporarily upgraded from twelve to eighteen LU440 grow lights to aid with the grow in of the pitch, after the renovation in the middle of winter!
More info on the LU440:

Amazing what you can do in such a short space of time with the best of pitch technology and a world class set of ground staff 👏👏👏👏👏
@kastandley
and team
Excellent first half after some big rain showers prior to throw in, but really happy with playability. Excellent footwear choices by many of the players. We always try to stay very consistent with our levels and studs by far the best option in Croker not matter what the weather!!
Chlorophyll testing with
@BlanaidWhiteDCU
this evening. Samples taken from the stadium pitch which are showing signs of shade stress. Will be interesting to see the next set of results after 3 weeks of intermittent grow light use.
Enjoyed a round
@dundalkgolfclub
It’s been a very challenging time for sports turf managers with the wettest March on record to a long drought period but
@DamianEnglish
and his team have the golf course spotless and that’s with very little irrigation. Greens were outstanding!!!
