India became a republic in 1950. And held its first parliamentary elections in 1952. What was so momentous about this event was that a country largely illiterate and unused to democratic process transitioned to universal adult suffrage in a manner unlike any other country.

How was Modi supposed to respond to the redistribution rhetoric of RG? By quoting Ludwig Von Mises and Friedrich Hayek? Or Frederic Bastiat? He responded to it with the emotive imagery of a woman's "mangala sUtra" being examined. He's a politician not an egghead

Twitter is rife with the news of vandalism at the Brindavana of Vyasatirtha - the great Madhwa theologian (1460-1539) This is a good time to reflect on Vyasatirtha A figure not as well known as he should be One who belongs to a period of v hectic theological activity in India

The custom of Sati is among the widely cited and the most reviled of Hindu practices, despite being more or less extinct for nearly 190 years Long after its ban in 1829, Sati remains in public discourse by virtue of being a polemical weapon

Karnataka had its 15th assembly election in May - a much discussed election While the media followed the election closely, the "exceptionalism" of Karnataka politics was not noted by any observer. So what makes Karnataka exceptional in the context of Indian politics?

On reactions to Audrey Truschke's rants It's disappointing most counters come from H-Right. Her fellow indologists of repute don't take her on, which reduces H-trust in them E.g. Edwin Bryant works in the same university as Audrey. You don't see him taking her on

Some may argue the hype on #KashmirFiles is too much But this is a corrective to centuries of apathy in H-society As a society, we are ahistorical. We don't reflect on historical injustices. Talking about them is perceived as a "far right" thing So this is a welcome change

Indian "nationalists" are really bad at risk diversification What if Adani indeed turns out to be a crook. Why do you want to link the state's brand (as well as the nation's) to the fortunes of Adani Enterprises? Foolish

On success of Indians in tech leadership roles- my take US STEM not a default choice. STEM ppl often uber-geeks, introverted, tech focus India STEM is default choice. Indian STEM folks are less into tech/geeky stuff. More well rounded. More into driving $ impact, seeking power

India is 170% of Russia in terms of GDP Yet v few in the West regard India to be as geopolitically important as Russia A riddle One reason - India has been so well behaved for last 7 decades that its perceived potentiality for evil is v low. Hence less worthy of attention

There's nothing "cool" about being non-observant w.r.t. the rituals/disciplines of your religious tradition Too many take pride in being "lax" "oh. am not all that particular about those things" You're particular about your company's dos & don'ts, not your family's traditions

Dharma is arguably the one word most commonly associated with Indic civilization. Few other Indian words are as readily associated with India, as Dharma. Yoga and Karma are probably close rivals! But what is Dharma? It is a term that is poorly understood despite much overuse.

Very often Hindus get asked - “Do you folks believe in multiple gods”? Other external observers, who have studied Hinduism more closely, ask - “Do Hindus believe in God at all? Are they atheists? Or at best Monists? Definitely not strong theists like us Christians/Muslims”

Of the last 3,000 years, Jews have been the largest religion in Palestine for about 1250, Muslims around 900, Christians around 600, and various pagan religions the rest. Muslim domination corresponded with extremely low population, which is why Jewish immigration worked.
