P.S. — it’s useful for teaching as well as for journalists.
Modi is inciting voters by saying Muslims produce more children, and if people vote for the opposition, only Muslims will benefit.
Is he fit enough to be the PM of a secular democratic country?
Why is Modi so scared that he has to stoop to this level?
The editorial board of the Financial Times writes about India’s failing democracy under BJP rule.
Notably, the FT isn’t leftist; it’s center-right. The world is noticing India’s decline.

Folks, read real historians.
Indian history is overrun these days by amateurs, hacks, and frauds. Stay away from such nonsense.
On Babur, I recommend Dale’s work, and also Babur himself, whose memoirs are quite striking (read Thackston’s translation).

Another day, another round of Hindu nationalist hate mail.
These call for my murder, being put in a gas chamber, and general wishes for me to suffer and die.
Mostly, this is about a history book I’ve yet to publish.

Check out this lovely new account from Columbia journalism students where they fact-check disinformation about campus protests.
First up (and no big surprise) is Hindu nationalist disinfo about the protests.
Both claims in this tweet by Suhag Shukla with 71.8k views — that the protestors in the video are chanting "We will snatch it, Palestine; we will scream for it, Palestine," and that this slogan was first chanted by Pakistani militias against Kashmiri Hindus — are FALSE.
We awoke today to a fierce anti-Muslim hate crime at Rutgers.
To do this on Eid… it is like attacking a church on Easter.
May justice be swift. Solidarity with all our Muslim and Palestinian students and allies.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted about US-based Hindu nationalists. How are they doing?
Well, they are advising their followers how to avoid jail sentences for violating FARA because of inappropriate involvement in the Indian elections. Absolutely wild.

Columbia’s president appears to have retaliated against Ilhan Omar’s daughter, due to Rep Omar’s hard hitting questions at yesterday’s hearing.
Regardless of your politics — retaliation is unacceptable.
Dr. Shafik, Columbia’s president, should resign or be fired.

Important reporting, both because of general India-Pakistan tensions and because this builds on recent trends of India’s far-right government carrying out assassinations in multiple nations, including Canada and the US (failed attempt).

We raised our encampment in solidarity with Gaza to protest Princeton's role in funding the ongoing genocide! We join a national movement of students speaking out against the occupation, fighting for Palestinian liberation.

Nothing is preventing Columbia Prez Shafik from walking into the encampment, sitting down, and listening for a few hours.
That’s what a sincere leader would do here.

Allison Busch began this article on Sanskrit and Hindi at Mughal courts before she left us, far too young, in 2019.
I finished it, which has been one of the great privileges of my scholarly career.
For those just joining us and wondering why this matters—
Hindu nationalism is the dominant political ideology in India, championed by the BJP and Modi.
The attacks on me are a small part of the broader Hindutva playbook. But you can see in them the methods, vitriol, and hate.
Some California universities are trampling on academic freedom and freedom of speech by cancelling graduation speeches.
Really, this is quite straightforward— Let them speak. Don’t like what they might say? Consider it another day in university life.
T-minus less than two weeks until I’m visiting Berkeley to give talks. Do join us for this one, on April 25, if you are interested in Sanskrit, Persian, South Asian history and history writing, and Indo-Muslim kings (including but not only the Mughals)

This matters. We need to counter local & national support for human rights abuses and political disenfranchisement in Gaza. Ceasefire now!

Syllabus share — Religion, Politics, Society
We look at case studies of religion in public life.
This includes 19th-century attempts to pitch Buddhism as pro-science, Malcom X’s life as a convert twice, and caste-oppressed views on Hinduism.
For the religious studies scholars — I’m going to get a lot of mileage out of this showing this clip to students, and you should too. So much to discuss, including—
Separation of church and state
Christian extremism
Theology vs religious studies
Laugh but these guys run America
In today's Congressional hearing, Representative Allen suggested that Columbia should host a Bible course for students "who are having problems with all of this" (aka anti-war protestors) so that they can understand "what will happen under the wrath of God" 😭 so unserious
USCIRF recommends—for a fifth year in a row—that India be labeled a country of particular concern due to infringing on religious freedom.
The Biden administration should act on this. The situation in India continues to worsen. Religious freedom matters.
Deputy Commissioner Tarik Sheppard shows the chains used to secure Hamilton Hall at Columbia University.

Best reporting I’ve seen yet on Columbia U president’s disastrous testimony on Thurs. Key takeaways—
*Likely, Shafik perjured herself (i.e., she lied)
*Columbia is secretly investigating professors for protected speech
*Her appeasement failed anyways
Article that reviews what happened the last time colleges called in the national guard — students were shot.
College students have every right to protest. They should not face deadly force, or any force at all in retaliation.
The assaults on Rutgers and academic freedom continue.

Some of those attacking Rutgers are trying to shut down ideas they don’t like.
That’s anathema to higher education.
Hearing ideas that you dislike and that challenge your very core is a design feature of universities, not a flaw. That’s how we learn and grow.
Some of the anti-intellectual camp attacking Rutgers right now are atrocity deniers.
About them, I say this — We need more education, not less, precisely to check such bad-faith actors, who deny evidence of human suffering for their personal political gain.
A final word on those who cloak their attacks on academic freedom in bad faith claims of countering bias and hate — Shame on you.
When people deliberately misclaim prejudice to try to shut down speech they dislike, they make it harder to address real discrimination on campus.
Better late than never.
It’s one step towards ending America supplying Israel with weapons that they use irresponsibly and against civilians to maintain an apartheid society.
