Describing peaceful protestors as 'Islamist extremists' has become normalised in this discussion. Muslim people using legit democratic channels are depicted as a threat. Islamophobic tropes are naturalised and unchallenged, across media and political parties.
@RunnymedeTrust
Interviewed the man in this photo today (Race Today magazine June 1976). This man who helped hundreds of Bengalis to squat, had never seen this photo or told anyone (including his own kids) about his activism.

This is a totally unacceptable intervention - schools are not sites for surveillance - children and young people need to have safe spaces for these conversations, not be criminalised and mined for 'intelligence'.
The deliberate amnesia that has robbed us of our histories is slowly but surely being chipped away.

This decision is outrageous, but rests comfortably within a hostile, Islamophobic mood, stirred up by political and media elites. Birbalsingh's statement wilfully corrupts and inverts the values of multiculturalism & is gleeful endorsement of Islamophobia.
1st book anniversary for me & I'm still not used to being called an author! Solidarity with all who challenge today's racism - the kind that would have us turn against & hate each other. Revisiting our historical struggles is good nourishment for that.

The HS may disagree with the protestors but to describe a 500,000 strong peaceful demonstration as a 'hate March' is irresponsible, inflammatory and dangerous. To threaten to legislate against them is disgraceful.
"There's only one way to describe those marches: they are hate marches."
Suella Braverman has referred to the pro-Palestinian marches in London at the weekend as "hate marches" and that she "will not hesitate to act" in changing the law surrounding protests โif there is a needโ.
Out filming again today, I was admiring a tree drooping with matthu fruit in someone's garden: they came out and lopped me of one to take home and as we chatted, it turned out he was a squatter in Pelham Buildings and is now a new recruit for my research! ๐

Given what we know has come out of this govt about BLM, critical race theory & so-called 'hate marchers', and in contrast, their inability to detect extremist racist views within their own ranks, we know the racialised nature of who will get swept up by this now.
The racialised nature of this wealth inequality whispers in the background. Slavery, empire and what that looks like as reparations, all need to reverberate loudly when we discuss growing inequalities.
