I am absolutely delighted to share that I have won the Royal Society of Literature's Giles St Aubyn award for my upcoming book 'Come What May, We're Here to Stay' which explores the rich tradition of political activism in the British South Asian Community.
"Why would I want 10 Ferraris, 20 diamond watches, or 2 planes? I built schools, a stadium, we provide clothes, shoes, food for people who are in extreme poverty.
I prefer that my people receive a little of what life has given me."
-Sadio Mané
On this day in 2004, British journalist and photographer Tom Hurndall died of his wounds after being shot by an Israeli sniper in the Gaza Strip while attempting to save Palestinian children from Israeli army gunfire.
Without trade unions we wouldn't have:
• Annual leave
• Sick pay
• A minimum wage
• A two day weekend
• Maternity leave
• Protection from workplace discrimination
• 8 hour working days
• Redundancy pay
• Health and safety in the workplace
• Workplace pensions
The IDF killed his wife, daughter, son and grandson.
Yesterday they injured him & killed his colleague Samer Abu Daqqa.
And
@WaelDahdouh
continues to report.
Solidarity with him & every journalist in Gaza. Without them, many of the horrors on the ground would remain invisible.
Just 7% of Brits are privately educated yet 74% of the new cabinet are privately educated. A two-tier education system creates a two-tier society. We'll hear a lot about diversity over the coming few days but diversity which doesn't account for social class is meaningless
Utterly bizarre that politicians who have their meals subsidised by the taxpayer say there is no money to feed hungry kids in schools. Over just 3 years, the public have forked out over £17m to subsidise MPs' meals. There's plenty of money; it's just going to the wrong places.
When you inherited considerable wealth from your parents, went to private school and got your first job through family connections, you have no business lecturing working-class people about work ethic. Working-class people work twice as hard to achieve half as much.

Absolutely heartbreaking news. Veteran Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh has passed away after being in shot in the head by Israeli forces while reporting on an Israeli army raid on a refugee camp in Jenin, occupied West Bank. She was wearing a press vest at the time.
HAPPENING NOW: Thousands mobilise at short notice outside Downing Street to demonstrate against British complicity in the massacre in Rafah and to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
Tomorrow 100,000 nurses go on strike. Their real pay has fallen by £1,800 this year, declining by £5,000 since 2010. 14% are using foodbanks while 1 in 3 have difficulty covering the cost of food and heating their homes. But this strike is about more than just paltry pay.🧵
Imran Khan wasn't voted out by the Pakistani public. He was ousted by 174 opposition politicians who joined forces in the National Assembly. Millions of Pakistanis didn't get a say in the matter and Shehbaz Sharif has no democratic mandate to lead Pakistan.
"If nurses aren't happy they can leave."
That's exactly the problem. 1 in 9 nurses left the NHS last year. Many go abroad or retrain in other fields. Only 21% of nurses say there are enough staff to do their job properly. Unsafe staffing levels harm us all. Pay them their worth.
Just 7% of Brits are privately educated yet 43% of the 100 most influential news editors, 44% of newspaper columnists, 74% of senior judges, 59% of permanent secretaries in the civil service are privately educated. A two-tier education system creates a two-tier society.
"I have friends who are aristocrats, I have friends who are upper class, I have friends who are you know working-class but- well not working-class..."
Rishi Sunak in his own words.
BREAKING: The Trade Unionists for Palestine group have shut down a Melbourne port, preventing trucks from accessing the area where an Israeli shipping line operates.
Protesters say shipping line ZIM has a long history of complicity in the oppression of the Palestinian people.
A growing number of councillors have resigned from the Labour party:
Asima Shaikh (Finsbury Park)
Mairéad Healy (Cambridge)
Usman Bhaimia (Gloucester)
Russell Whitling (Gedling)
Amna Abdullatif (Manchester)
Jessie Hoskin (Stroud)
Shaista Aziz (Oxford)
Amar Latif (Oxford)
This in response to Muslim kids wanting to spend 5 minutes of their lunchbreak praying.
I know many in the media profession absolutely detest Muslims but get a grip!

Aldi is set to become the first UK supermarket to pay store assistants a minimum of £11.00 an hour. The pay increase will be put in place from 1st January 2023.
19 years ago yesterday, Rachel Corrie was crushed to death by an Israeli bulldozer after attempting to prevent the Israeli military from demolishing a Palestinian home in Gaza. An incredibly brave young woman who stood for the rights of others. Rest in power.
“When you get these jobs that you have been so brilliantly trained for, just remember that your real job is that if you are free, you need to free somebody else. If you have some power, then your job is to empower somebody else.”

Last weekend an intimidating mob marched through London chanting “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” - a slogan that is widely understood as a demand for the destruction of Israel. Attempts to pretend otherwise are disingenuous. 1/3
500,000 people in London marching in solidarity with Palestine.
The biggest Palestine solidarity rally in British history.
Demonstrations are taking place in towns and cities across the UK.
BT made £1.3bn profit, £750m to shareholders, CEO £3.5m (32% increase). Meanwhile engineers and call centre staff suffering from the worst squeeze on living standards since the 1950s are being offered a real terms pay cut. It's not a money problem – it's a priorities problem.
And I know parents who work multiple jobs just to put food in the fridge for their kids. Why should they fork out 3 billion a year to subsidise private schools for the wealthiest in society?
When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.
What a load of nonsense. Nadhim Zahawi claimed £5,822 on his expenses to heat his riding stables. He banked £1.3million from an oil company while working as an MP. He's in no moral position whatsoever to lecture anyone about fairness.
🚨NEW: Unions representing more than 20 million workers in France, Germany, Spain and Italy have joined forces to slam the UK government’s anti-strikes Bill. They say that the UK is already an outlier in Europe and has the most draconian anti-union laws in the democratic world.
BREAKING: The leaders of one of Scotland’s largest local Labour Party branches have resigned their positions in protest at the leadership’s stifling of debate on Gaza.
9 members of Glasgow Kelvin CLP Exec Committee including Labour Peer Baroness Bryan of Partick have resigned.
How many of us were taught working-class history in school? Did we learn about the levellers, the chartists or the tolpuddle martyrs? Do we really appreciate the role played by working-class people who fought tool and nail for many of the rights we enjoy today?
If you're an MP who's received a 28% pay rise since 2010, and have your meals subsidised by the taxpayer, you're in no position to lecture a nurse who, since 2010, earns £5,000 less in real-terms about pay restraint. There's plenty of money; it's just going to the wrong places.
BREAKING: Over 1,000 workers have blockaded 4 arms factories across the UK which provide components for arms used by Israel in its bombardment of Gaza.
Actions are being coordinated with workers in France, Denmark and the Netherlands who are also blockading arms factories today.
Over half a million marched on the streets of London today in solidarity with the Palestinian people.
They were joined by millions more in more than 60 cities, in at least 36 countries, across 6 continents, in a global day of action for Palestine.
Rishi Sunak becoming Prime Minister is not a story of meritocracy. It is a story of how parentage and privilege continue to dictate who governs Britain. In modern Britain, it is inherited wealth, private education and extensive family connections that pay the real dividends.
A baby born in Gateshead in 2019 can potentially die 15 years earlier than a baby born in Guildford. That's the extent of health inequality in the UK.
The gap in life expectancy between the richest and poorest continues to grow yet our government wishes to scrap a report on it.
The government could end the train strikes tonight if they wanted to. Instead, they have blocked the rail delivery group from giving railway workers an improved pay offer. Remember that when they tell you the unions are ruining Christmas.
🚨NEW:
@RMTunion
have secured a pay rise worth between 6.6% and 9.5% following intense negotiations with Transport for Wales. The rail union has now secured deals with the devolved governments in both Wales and Scotland without any strike action.
Over just three years, the British public have forked out over £17m to subsidise MPs' meals. They earn £84,144 a year (putting them in the top 5% of earners) and got a £2,212 pay rise just a few months ago.
People who inherited their home from their parents, who got a cushty job due to their family connections, who've never stepped foot in a factory in their lives will tell working-class people they are poor because they don't work hard. These people don't know what struggle is.
BREAKING: Thousands of British Muslim councillors, imams, doctors and other professionals have signed an open letter saying they have lost confidence in
@Keir_Starmer
as the leader of the Labour Party, following his comments on Gaza.
🚨BREAKING: The Government has suffered a major defeat as the High Court rules that its “strike-breaking” agency worker regulations are unlawful.
The important judgement means employers can no longer use agency staff to fill in for striking workers during industrial action.
Had a really nice chat with Solomon who brought his daughter along to the London rally in solidarity with Palestine.
Muslims and Jews united for peace, justice and human rights.
We will not be divided.

HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds of students at Luton Sixth Form College walk out in solidarity with Palestine and in protest at the college's links with arms manufacturer Leonardo.
The man who firebombed the detention centre for refugees in Dover said he planned to "obliterate Muslim children" an hour before the attack. A mere day later, Suella Braverman refers to refugees as an "invasion". These terrorists are enabled by rhetoric from the top.
My dad grew up in Luton in the 1970s. The term Paki was used by racist thugs as they sought to make life hell for my dad's generation. When racist gangs would target South Asians in the street they would literally describe it as 'Paki-Bashing.' It's never been banter.
If you believe a group of workers shouldn't take strike action because they are vital to the running of the country then, by that same logic, you should support them when they demand better than real-terms pay cuts so they don't have to resort to strike action in the first place.
Media outlets need to be honest about what happened at Al Aqsa Mosque last night. These were not clashes. Israeli forces raided one of the holiest sites in Islam and attacked thousands of worshippers with rubber bullets, tear gas and sound grenades. 152 Palestinians were injured.
NEW: Around 65% of the cabinet are privately educated. This is more than double that of Theresa May’s 2016 Cabinet (30%), and more than David Cameron’s 2015 Cabinet (50%). Just 7% of Brits are privately educated. A two-tier education system creates a two-tier society.
UPDATE: Luton Sixth Form College have confirmed in an email to students today that they will be suspending all further activities with arms manufacturer Leonardo.
Great win for
@LSFCstudents
HAPPENING NOW: Hundreds of students at Luton Sixth Form College walk out in solidarity with Palestine and in protest at the college's links with arms manufacturer Leonardo.
NEW: Been told the Labour Party leadership are holding emergency meetings following mass public backlash over their stance on Palestine. Likely to see a change in their language and position.
Comes after several councillors resigned over comments made by Keir Starmer.
Britain isn't simply a passive bystander; it's been actively complicit in the oppression of the Palestinian people. 6 months before the 2014 assault on Gaza where over 2000 Palestinians were killed, Britain approved £7 million worth of arms sales to Israel.
During lockdown, many of us celebrated the key workers who kept the country going in very difficult (and often dangerous) circumstances. Those same workers are collectively organising for better pay and conditions and we should stand 100% behind them. Solidarity with
@RMTunion
.
The brilliant Dennis Skinner on how vital foreign-born workers are to the NHS. Our healthcare system would collapse without them. Instead of stoking xenophobia, politicians should focus their energy on demanding proper pay and better conditions for all NHS workers.
British Gas owner Centrica has seen operating profits increase five-fold to £1.34 billion. Meanwhile British households face annual energy bills of £3,850, three times what they were paying at the start of 2022. This would put more than half of British households in fuel poverty.
A very emotional resignation speech from councillor Amaar Anwar tonight.
Every Labour member, councillor and MP should watch it.
'My 5-year-old daughter saw images of what was going on in Gaza. She said to me, "dad, what have you done about the videos you were watching?"'
NEW: Kirklees councillor Amaar Anwar has resigned from the Labour Party over its position on Gaza. Told there could be further resignations.
The party has now lost control of 4 councils over the issue: Burnley, Oxford, Norwich & Hastings, with 70+ councillors leaving the party.
Since 2010:
📉Nurses’ real pay is down by £4,300
📉Paramedics’ real pay is down by £5,600
📉Teachers' real pay is down by 20%
📈 MPs' pay up by 28%
It's not a question of affordability, it's a question of priorities.
Justice for the 72 people who lost their lives in this preventable tragedy. Victims of corporate greed and institutional neglect. We will never forget them and we will never stop fighting for justice. Rest in power.
#Justice4Grenfell
Taxpayers have forked out over £17m to subsidise MPs' meals in just 3 years
We subsidise private schools who benefit from tax exemptions of 3 billion a year
Meanwhile, public sector workers are expected to endure real-terms pay cuts and hungry kids are denied free school meals.
"What have the unions ever done for us?"
Quite a lot actually:
• Minimum wage
• Annual leave
• Sick pay
• A two day weekend
• Maternity leave
• Protection from workplace discrimination
• Health and safety in the workplace
• Workplace pensions
And much much more...
I'm sorry but I have zero sympathy for politicians, local and national, who tell me they'd like to be more vocal on Palestine but it could affect their careers.
Nearly 10,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza. You won't die for speaking truth to power.
The British Medical Association says the Government has wasted £3,000,000,000 on junior doctor strikes — more than double the cost of settling their whole claim.
Failure to negotiate is costly.
Physically attacked and called terrorists earlier today at Bakerloo station as we left a peaceful protest in solidarity with Palestine.
The woman repeatedly shouts Pakistani, exposing her ignorance.
Two Jewish women intervened and called her out.
