Live my life thro my 19 year old son and 13 year old daughter! My wife is a rockstar. Dabble in Coaching and Economics... views obviously my own, stay weird ❤️
My daughter thinks I'm Chandler Bing (she has no idea what I do and I don't see it as work) and so I'm sharing a few of the many projects we've done with Oyoannax this season to help her (hopefully)... ❤️
Don’t care if we win the WC, hope coaches see that caring, focusing on what players CAN do, creating an environment where people can be their best (looks like fun for these lads) and modelling good behaviours are way more important than technique and fault correction.. 😎
Back to sport next week ❤️Remember kids.. no bleep tests for the coaches 🏃♂️ or press ups when they make a mistake 👀 let them do the drills they want to do 🔨 don’t shout at them 🤬 no queues for them to wait to have a go at coaching 🙋♂️🙋 individualise your feedback to them ❤️
Spoke to multiple school Heads of Rugby... more kids playing, different versions of the game, kids signing up for optional sessions, more girls playing, less emails from parents, happy coaches. Wondering why it took a global pandemic for these outcomes...
Top work 🏴 One more to go! However, makes me 😢 that one person was allowed to and others stood and watched as many people who played a small part in this were taken from their passion... also shout out to Stuart Lancaster who trusted and picked many of these youngsters... 👏
How good would it be if 6N teams trained like community teams this year to reduce covid risk? 90 minutes Tuesday, an hour on Thursday, 3 players have to be missing from each session. No analysis. One end of the pitch cannot be reached by floodlights. Pasta bake. Anything else?
Last 6 months Marcus Smith has been allowed to be himself. SO many skilful young players who want this and to change the game in England (lots were playing 7's yesterday!) Coaches... are you getting in the way with Prem cut and paste or coaching them to play like you?
#FreedomDay
1 year ago today, 2 people with a deep understanding of player and coach development were allowed to be removed by someone with very little... I am still 🤯
Grateful for.... more family time ✅ way more exercise ✅ less pollution/asthma ✅ more sleep ✅ more time to think ✅ do some (re)connecting ✅ learning time (doing 2 courses) ✅ yoga ✅ tax done ✅ eating less at services ✅ no driving (not been in a car for 2 weeks!) ✅ ❤️
enjoyed this message I just received... so true... "If the Black Ferns can play the RWC Final with smiles on their faces, why on earth are kids in local clubs not always doing the same? Some junior coaches need to give their heads a wobble."
Martin Haag coached that England U20's team JWC winning team containing lots of today's players. They had the time of their lives. One of the best humans and coaches I know... ❤️
I mean, it’s kinda obvious. Understand your identity, play to strengths, players own decision-making, help people belong and be at their best, know what bus stop each person is at, connect on a human level, learn as often as you can, enjoy the ride… ❤️
The coaching required in this ecological approach is based on restraint more than anything else. Just because you have coach written on the back of your tracksuit or a whistle around your neck does not mean you should be talking all the time"
2 conversations today about a junior club in Bristol... one 10 year old turned away as not ‘experienced’ enough and U17 struggling to get a team out due to a win at all costs mentality... be cool when that club sees the connection...

'Of the 81 reasons they gave for why sports were fun, "winning" came 48th, "playing in tournaments" 63rd' Far too many junior coaches saying 'yeah, but not my son/team...'
"When I was a kid all I was thinking about was when I was getting my next meal." 🇿🇦

An incredibly moving interview with South Africa captain Siya Kolisi

"They have first-class reputations within the game, and I know they will both go on to new exciting roles."
Dean Ryan pays tribute to outgoing England U18 coaches John Fletcher and Peter Walton:
FAO the coach I spoke to today who asked me ‘who the hell are you?’ and told me ‘I am a level 1 RFU coach and so know what to do’. Shouting at kids for missing tackles & choosing the option you would not have chosen when asked if they wanted to kick/receive is not that useful 😎
Parents I'm sure you have good intentions but please don't shout instructions to your child while they play.
You may think it will help them but they already have enough to think about on the pitch!
Instead just enjoy watching them be children and having fun, let them play.
@dannycare
Bet the kids were still competitive. The lack of scoring is (ironically) because of the adults. Would be easier if that rationale was explained. Maybe consider what else we could ‘score’…
“Rugby teams invest so much in training and technology and weights, but between the ears there needs to be a lot of investment as well. You need to be mentally healthy to fulfil your potential as a player.”
'One of the coaches came in, looked at me & said, ‘what the **** is wrong with you?’ I told him I was miserable. He just burst out laughing'

We recently captured this amazing moment at our Easter Courses
The incredible connection and heart-warming friendship between these two boys perfectly demonstrates the ethos of our courses, and we could not be prouder

here’s a cheeky little idea for getting your players to think tactically in games...
@CoachAndInspire
it’s a cross-sport idea for sure. Keen to see how people develop it further... 🏑 🦡
"Sir Alex Ferguson was the master of one thing: Whenever we took the pitch for a match, after hours and hours of work, we were allowed to be free. We felt total freedom to move where we wanted, to play how we wanted"
Coaching stuff... think about where you stand & why ✅ use replays to stretch/support ✅ scaffold them pausing not you ✅ notice where they are looking ✅ be intentional around co-coaching ✅ scaffold and support peer-2-peer feedback ✅ individual coaching moments ✅ smile ✅
Junior sport will die from the bottom up. If, as parents, you think it’s helpful to abuse players and the referee to get your kick on a Sunday then maybe consider the long term impact. Exciting to see the kids then modelling that behaviour…

Slowly dying over the (way too widely held) view that adults think that other adults shouting at their kids is a great way to build character/learn life lessons...

‘So well coached..’

Wonder how many ‘professional’ coaches could do what JJ has done for this team. Way too many copy and pasting and way too little coach development in their bubbles...
“It’s easier to work to a plan, because you can blame somebody else. I’d rather take responsibility, because the rewards are much greater when it comes off.”
Over 200 episodes, almost 600k downloads, reflections on the pod so far. It's been my CPD, great people happily share their stuff (I got my timings wrong with Razor and he waited 2 hours for me!), it's created lifelong friendships and some pople have got jobs off the back of it..
🗣️"If professional NFL scouts cannot pick 7 times Super Bowl winner Tom Brady at age 23, why do we deify 8 year olds...or let kids sit on the bench, because we think they're not good enough....!?"

Sad times for our sport. Many great people will been through the same process on several occasions already. Always here to help as someone who experienced it 2 years ago... ❤️
8 year olds playing netball, full court, nets 3x their height, adult rules in terms of positions, 50% watching, parents thinking its necessary so they can play and win games... 🤔
'Parents should expect more character development and positive life lessons from their coaches and sports organisations...if your coach tells you that this is not his or her job, run, and run fast. That is not the type of coach you want for your child'
3 things I ❤️ about what I do…
1. autonomy has high value 💰
2. proximity to impact… 📈
3. surprised every day 🚀
Would ❤️ to add…
1. skate to work… 🛹
2. beach nearby 🏝️
3. no alarm ⏰
All Blacks playing the game the way it could be played if we saw more possibility as coaches. Kick to score, forwards as ball players, life of the ball, smiles on faces... 😎
