two Spanish doctors who are visiting my dept for a month -were shouted at to “fuck off back to where you came from” yesterday, on the bus -were SPAT on in the street last week when walking and speaking Spanish to each other but sure, yeah, tell me again how “London is open”

@BlaisinSquad when I was 10, my cat (a tuxedo) went missing for a week, turns out she was hanging out at the local church, and would walk in during mass, and stroll around looking for pets from the congregation. then sit on the pillar by the gate so everyone passing out could pet her. slag!

@BlaisinSquad oh, also, I once brought home a bit of Communion from mass and fed it to her (cos y’know I didn’t want her to go to purgatory or w/e), and my ma went absolutely fuckin SPARE when she found out (“you gave the BODY OF CHRIST to the fuckin CAT!?!?”) Had to go straight to confession!

there’s this 100 y/o patient on our list, who I’d only ever seen fast asleep, & who I‘d assumed was a sweet little old dear. I woke her on the morning ward round, “Hi, my name’s Ronan and I’m one of the doctors”. She looked at me, & immediately roared “FUCK OFF!” iconic.

the saddest realisation, when sitting down to figure out a non-medical side-hustle +/- exit strategy, is that I’ve put 10 years of my life into this, and all my other skills & passions have fallen by the wayside and atrophied beyond recognition.

Medical school, and its endless vignette tropes, conditions us to associate “gay man” with “HIV/syphilis/PCP”. Being constantly reduced to a set of diseases can get to you, over time. This is why representation—no matter how seemingly insignificant—matters.

the more relevant question is: do I care? Patients are not customers and the customer is not always right. I am a private individual, and a citizen, and I am entitled to a personal life. This notion of “professionalism” is a relic from the days of identikit white male doctors.

@DrGoblin3 @DrLindaDykes sooooooo many big Medtwitter names who tone policed and gaslit any juniors who spoke out about this, and tried to paint us as angry incels or whatever. Some of them have now changed their tunes or at least, blessedly, fallen silent on the issue. But I haven’t forgotten.

doctors should shadow nurses & AHPs for an entire year of medical school so they learn to help out with jobs like these.

@NotoriousB_E_G Really inappropriate, perpetuates the antiquated notion that doctors are chilling in the mess, rather than running from pillar to post trying to tackle the forest fire that is acute medical care atm

getting a bad case of covid & dropping the ball on my academic rotation, then shattering my leg & needing extension to FY2 wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I signed up for Academic Foundation Programme…but I got asked for ID buying wine in LIDL so let’s just focus on that

@iDrSunny it’s definitely a thing, i had it so much easier than some of my female colleagues, and if you’re IMG +\- POC it’s worse again. Of course certain people (cough Leanne cough) like to pretend that doctors are always the aggressors, but it doesn’t work like that.

I had a day where I could’ve said “sorry” upwards of a hundred times, all for things that were outside my control and actively impeded me from doing my job. but I didn’t, and it felt good. I will no longer apologise when I am not given the basic resources needed to do my job.
