When I got a place at medical school I didnโt envisage 8 years later there being a mob in Trafalgar Square cheering the idea of hanging doctors and nurses in the midst of a pandemic.
โฆ itโs just all a bitโฆ fucking awful isnโt it? Like just truly absolutely vile?
Just took 93yr Mum to vote, sheโs registered blind. In a very loud voice she said, โwhich box for Chris Whitty?โ A cheer went up from the waiting voters.
Weโve all had colleagues whoโve been patients on ITU and even some whoโve died as a direct result of treating this disease. Sorry for the language but I am absolutely fucking furious. They deserve better than this sort of hate speech being tolerated.
Witnessed one of my most humbling moments in medicine today. Went to review a patient and found the morning phlebotomist feeding him his lunch and sitting with him. Sheโd finished work an hour ago but had seen him alone in the morning and wanted to be with him.
โค๏ธ
We had to phone people to say their loved ones were dying and they couldnโt see them.
We had to treat terrified patients while wearing masks, visors, gowns, and aprons.
Iโve never seen friends and colleagues look so exhausted and broken.
... I donโt know what else to say.
A couple of months ago this guy appeared in my mentions with anti-LGBTQ stuff. His pinned tweet was a burning pride flag. I reported him and he was found to have broken no rules.
This weekend he shot a woman dead for hanging the pride flag in her shopโฆ
I canโt imagine the pain, fear, and anger felt by the trans community watching the prime ministerโs horrible little speech today.
We as allies to the trans community need to raise our voices and create/maintain the safe spaces for our siblings.

One of our SHOโs today is Alex whoโs also an opera singer, returning to the NHS frontline during the COVID outbreak.
Heโs treating the team to some shows during quieter periods! Bravo! ๐น
Finished my first ever night as solo reg in charge of A&E - smooth and efficient night thanks to a stunning team, plus loads of support from the consultants (including a phone call to check-in from one who wasnโt even working)

Recorded a lecture for an A&E nursing course after my shift last night.
Didnโt realise the recording would include my face...
Thereโs multiple slides where Iโm sipping at an absolutely *giant* glass of Sauvignon Blanc... ๐ ๐คฆโโ๏ธ๐ท
We recently saw a trans patient in ED. They were booked in under their birth name/gender, but the whole team repeatedly ensured they used their preferred pronouns and name. This was handed over to each new clinician involved in their care. It made me so happy to see it done well.
Ladies, if he:
- comes into your life all of a sudden
- makes your heart race
- takes your breath away
- makes you feel faint
Heโs not your man. Heโs a pulmonary embolism.
Awful vile little policy. Imagine the distress and worry to trans women on top of already being unwell and in hospital. Absolutely get in the bin with this bullshit.
I never thought I'd ever see it again in UK Emergency Medicine but at 05:12 this morning we had cleared the entire waiting room and there was nobody waiting to be seen.
Outrageously proud of the night team (both ED and the wider hospital community), monumental effort! ๐ฅน๐ฅ
Immensely proud of the nurses for rejecting the 5% pay offer and bribe of a couple of grand. Itโs well below inflation and was set to pay them off in the short term whilst undervaluing in the long.
Thereโs been years of this and workers have had enough. Well done โ
Iโm really really really really really really sick of this disease now...
Seeing people gasping for breath.
Trying to explain over the phone in the middle of the night just how unwell a relative is.
Doing it over and over and over again all day every day.
It feels endless.
Excited to announce the boss today found out about my Twitter account and follower number.
โHowโd you get that many? I always thought you were quite boringโฆโ
Furious.
Dear Santa,
All I want for Christmas is some inpatient beds to move people to please.
Also if you could make it so people take COVID precautions seriously thatโd be grand too.
Yours sincerely,
An exhausted A&E doctor
Of the 28 people in my tube carriage tonight I was one of four still wearing a mask. Iโm on my way to work on intensive care where weโre still admitting COVID patients onto ventilators.
Returns to โnormalityโ is encouraging, but I canโt help but feel an uneasy anticipation?
Absolute worst night of my career.

When do you declare a major incident when every day is a major incident?
So utterly utterly broken (both the system, the staff, and me).
If youโre sending monkey emojis to the teenagers who just took the national team to within 1 penalty of winning and did the best in a generation of England teams then you are complete and utter scum.
A refresher on the term Junior Doctor - this is anyone whoโs qualified from medical school but isnโt a consultant yet. I will be a junior doctor for 9.5 years by the time I become a consultant. Junior doctors are in charge of the hospital on site overnightโฆ

Lovely chat with a radiologist,
Opening with โand your grade is?โ before even letting me discuss a case and following it up with โI donโt expect to have to discuss this with someone so juniorโ is just frankly rude.
Maybe letโs discuss the case before you weigh in with that?
One of my favourite parts of medicine is when you phone for a referral without realising itโs a friend on the other end and you both do your โdoctor voiceโ for the big formal conversation and then realise who it is and youโre like OMG HOW ARE YOU ๐ฅฐ
A woman told me โyou need to climb outโ and I distinctly remember thinking that if I drowned at least I was going out being offered unsolicited and really quite obvious advice, which has been such a staple of my life since I got a twitter account.
Youโve heard of elf on the shelf, now get ready for ITโS ONLY THE FIRST WEEK IN DECEMBER AND THEREโS 65 WAITING TO BE SEEN AT 5 PM ON A MONDAY WITH NO BEDS ON THE WARDS BECAUSE OF MASSIVE HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE UNDERFUNDING BY THE TORIES I MIGHT JUST SCREAM FOREVER

Absolute melt.
I recently heard a colleague who was hospitalised with COVID open up about their flashbacks to their experience and their genuine fear about the second wave.
How dare you stand there and call it a hoax. How dare you *deliberately* put us through that again.
My flatmateโs nephew is staying for a bit so weโre having turkey dinosaurs, mashed potato volcanoes, and broccoli trees. This is a fantastic day.

BrewDog - you had a puppy! Congrats! Have a week off!
NHS - six months ago we heard you were getting married on the 20th so we scheduled you for nights 18th-22nd as a wedding gift hereโs the emails of people who might be able to swap if you ask really nicely
BrewDog was the world's first company to offer pawternity leave.
When one of our team members gets a puppy or adopts a dog they get a fully paid week off to help their new family member settle in.
So far 124 dogs have been adopted; that is 620 days of paid leave.
Here we have the actual department of health and social care posting false figures to smear their own doctors.

Mildly vulnerable post: itโs the final photo day of the 75 day challenge and Iโm beyond pleased. In 2.5 years Iโve lost 49.3 kg and taken my BMI from 38 to 24.5.

I often see 20+ patients in a 9 hour shift. I can be seeing/managing 5+ at once.
The registrar and nurse in charge of the department can be responsible for ensuring safety of 150+ patients in one go on a busy night shift.
GPs will have 1000s on their books.
Log off.
A doctor has 1 life to deal with, a graduate engineer (like I was) - we had hundreds. Transporting explosives to blow up old buildings? Predicting ground movements to the closest mm (which I did)? If we got it wrong, countless lives would have been lost.
Iโm sick of trying to speak to specialists for advice and getting punted away for being too junior.
I had an unwell patient tonight and I phoned a colleague to ask for their help and expert opinion with the case.
