The first night at the encampment I counted 80 people. After that it dropped to a couple dozen, with questions about whether the encampment had the full support of SJP and Palestinian students. But after watching classmates get gassed, the protest has UVA students full attention.

What’s absolutely clear is that this is easily the most attention the protestors have gotten since they started the encampment Tuesday. At some points it seemed to even have an attendance problem, with repeated calls on social media for more people to join.

Just spoke with a protestor who was tear-gassed but avoided arrest. He was pouring water onto his face/eyes. “It hurts really bad man.” Said the police response was disproportionate. Roughly a dozen people have been arrested so far.

UVA tells me that this is “guidance” but not the official policy. “The document circulating around isn’t policy.” Tents are prohibited “regardless of the nature of their use.” I’m told the doc was updated to reflect official policy and correct the “erroneous” guidance.

After the vote failed two weeks ago, Charlottesville City Council again took up a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza. This time it passed. The pivotal vote came from Brian Pinkston, who said it’s important to change your mind “if you tend to believe you made a mistake.”

@samsanders When we were 12 my friend asked if I wanted some cookie dough. I did. He brought out an entire tube and CUT IT IN HALF, one for him and one for me. This kid was regularly facing a pound of cookie dough as a casual snack and I’ve never gotten over it.

Just got more info on why UVA made a change to the "guidance." Apparently someone at the Chapel told them about the discrepancy. UVA says: "the inaccuracy on the tent permit application was brought to our attention by faculty at the Chapel site, prompting the change."

Suspect Christopher Jones will next appear in court on Feb. 5. The trial could drag on for many months. It is not clear if UVa plans to release the report after the trial, or ever. Both the AG and UVa have said the report is exempt from FOIA due to attorney-client privilege.

According to police chief Michael Kochis, "in or around" the park was the location given by the victim. "When we went to the hospital that's what we were told from the person, because he was kind of out of it," Kochis said. The exact location of the stabbing remains unclear
good article; really appreciate @rmest0 speaking with residents of the park. seems to me like there’s going to be a strong inclination to associate any violence near the DTM with the Market Street encampment, and that deserves to be interrogated.

UVa declined to share the report with the public, saying it first needed to review it to "ensure factual accuracy." UVa planned to release it in "early November." Now they are say it must be withheld so that it doesn't interfere with the criminal trial of the suspected gunman.

The resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire, the immediate/safe release of all hostages, and the entry/provision of humanitarian aid into Gaza “at the scale required to save the maximum number of lives.” Copies will be sent to Biden, Sen. Kaine, Sen. Warner and Rep. Good.
