That’s not what Thirumavalavan says. He says even if there is lit/evidence to show Murugan as a Tamil deity he has been appropriated and made part of a larger Hindu (“sanatana”) tradition. This argument has been made by academics wrt other ‘folk’/indigenous deities. It’s not new
