This is why responding quickly and precisely to gunfire is so critical.
There is no, as in zero of a cogent of an argument to prevent gunshot detection to be used by first responders in order to save lives and protect communities.
ShotSpotter, Inc. gunfire detection enables fast and precise response of first responders which SAVES LIVES!

Two young police officers are being credited with saving the life of a 13-year-old shooting victim on Chicago’s south side.
ShotSpotter, Inc. Alert gets them to the scene quickly and precisely in order to “scoop and go”.
Bravo 👏🏾 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
How is it that a technology that identifies and alerts on criminal gunfire racially biased?
There is no personal identifying aspects associated with the alert; including race, gender, age, height, weight etc.
And, Why doesn’t the press, press on that blatantly false claim?
Says here, 👆🏾 ShotSpotter led to 2-3 minute response time advantage that resulted in increased forensic evidence collection and vastly improved trauma care interventions of GSW victims.
Those pesky procedural benefits.
Can someone please explain the downside of alerting police to criminal gunfire in communities being victimized by said gunfire (by a handful of trigger pullers)? And What-Aboutisms are not valid responses.
@Andrefor40th
@williamrawlss
Seriously, just “stand on business” as being an defunder of police or making a business case that police response to gunfire has unintended consequences/costs. We can respectfully disagree-But don’t make *ish up.
@Andrefor40th
@williamrawlss
Gunshot Detection is a “line of sight response tool” in the context of 80-90% of gunfire goes unreported by traditional 911. This leads to increased evidence recovery and GSW victims getting life saving interventions.
@Andrefor40th
@williamrawlss
One of many quotes I had in an interview as far back as 2016-
“I would strongly suggest that the real magic happens once an agency gets the alert. What do they do with that? Technology by itself can’t defeat gun violence. It requires a much more deliberate and broad strategy.”
@CPD1617Scanner
What an awful experience to see your loved one dead by a self inflicted gunshot. Horrible. I hope the local community wraps their collective arms around this family and keeps them in prayer.
Guns are completely unable to shoot themselves. Serial trigger pullers are not deterred by gun control laws nor influenced by entry level jobs paying non living wages. Focused interventions of shooters (not guns) is the only effective means of preventing shootings.
Gunshot detection is an automatic and digitized 911 call for service which is faster, more accurate and more effective than any unvetted manual analog 911 call.

@PeterMoskos
Puzzling. I suspect some of the more recent & vocal pushback comes from the delta variant of abolish/defund the police movement. Since the defund the police strategy not going to happen, let’s pick on some of the tools they use - build a narrative of costly, scary & ineffective.
Four things about ShotSpotter
1. Crtitical operational data on criminal gunfire
2. Improved response time and location accuracy
3. Increased evidence recovery (see #’s 1 and 2 above)
4. Saves lives of GSW victims (see #’s 1 and 2 above)
The activation of the ShotSpotter technology increased the likelihood of police transport of gunshot victims…….This technology may be beneficial in enhancing the care of victims of penetrating trauma.
@CPD1617Scanner
@shotspotter
I have not seen any cogent analysis to date on why police AND the communities they are sworn to serve and protect would collectively be better off NOT KNOWING ABOUT CRIMINAL GUNFIRE...someone please explain.

In 2022, of the 41,632 ShotSpotter alerts, in Chicago OEMC data shows 802
alerts had a disposition of homicide (0110) or aggravated assault
(041A). Effectively a blood shooting.
Only 63 of the 802 alerts had a corresponding call to 9-1-1
within *15 minutes and 1 mile* of the ShotSpotter alert. Therefore,
739 shooting victims may have never been assisted if it were not for ShotSpotter.
Dead on accurate. ShotSpotter alert in Oakland relatively close to where I live, so I self dispatched to see for myself. Please to see OPD beat me there. Awesome work!!

Thanks for sharing re-tweeting. But most importantly, thank you for your service which sadly goes under-appreciated/reported.
@PeterMoskos
Being saying this since the beginning. And it is even worse when violence takes place and there is no LE response which signals that violence is acceptable and normal.
@PeterMoskos
@SteveBellow
So let’s ask the question what happens when violence like that is normalized in children- do we think the impact of that is? And this is doubly awful if they have a perception that society doesn’t think they are worthy of being protected.

@CPD1617Scanner
This is profoundly tragic and a difficult to understand what would motivate someone to do this. Another sad day for Chicago. RIP Queen.
I’ll start-
Not worth the $ investment (says someone not directly impacted by persistent gunfire) or….we don’t like police responding to/investigating criminal gunfire (says Defund the Police supporters). These are two really specious arguments that devalue victim’s rights
@PeterMoskos
It fails to acknowledge that the vast majority of victims of gun violence are young men of color so the racist troupe is a bit befuddling.There is also independent as well as anecdotal data that suggests gun violence goes largely unreported, therefore normalized.
#astrangefebate
Could two followers please copy and re-post this tweet? I'm trying to demonstrate that someone is always there, especially at this time of year. Call 800-273-8255 (National Suicide Prevention Helpline US). Just two. Any two. Copy, not retweet. Let’s all look out for each other.
Tourniquet and Chest Seals equals Extremity Arterial Bleeding and Open Pneumothorax or Collapsed Lung. If untreated, these injuries can result in death in 2-5 minutes.
That is why, a fast precise response along with trauma interventions is key to saving the lives of GSW victims.
@Suntimes
The fact is 80-90% of gunfire goes unreported via traditional 911.
Why?
The Four R’s
1. Recognition - was that a gunshot?
2. Retribution - fear of snitching
3. Repetitive - someone else will call
4. Resignation - i give up/in, the way it is

is the most tragic reason

Great work in Pittsburgh! Layered technology including ShotSpotter, improved policies/process and a focus on community engagement are the key drivers here.
Community gunfire exhibits the law of concentration — in that it tends be concentrated during very specific times, in specific places involving very few specific individuals. This suggests that successful deterrence strategies and interventions are hyper local and bespoke.
We are in for a challenging summer. Pay attention- our LE partners are telling us they are seeing a proliferation of ghost guns and we are detecting a measurable increase in full auto incidents. Lives are at stake.
@JoeGiacalone
@SteveBellow
It wasn’t immediate until the *wrong* people began to *potentially* experience violent crime. And by wrong people I mean those that enjoy a state of bliss by circumstance vs those that we reflexively send our thoughts and prayers to because they might live *over there*.
@ZaidJilani
Correction - shooting at cars implies parked + unoccupied cars. The correct description is, shooting at motorists or people driving by in cars. Important distinction as there were shooting victims involved vs simple property damage.
Although we love the ShotSpotter, Inc. technology what is far more important is what it helps produce-*precision policing* and *community engagement*. Brilliant Columbia PD!!
@SPOTNEWSonIG
This is not the type of incident you want to dispatch non-LE to. But I state the obvious. Also assuming while root cause efforts are additive, a summer job program not likely to prevent this type of nonsense.

Frightening - but as I have been saying we are detecting an alarming number of incidents involving full auto. Something is happening out there with these converters being made more available. Terrible

I’ll quickly try to tell my story of experiencing the normalization of violence. It happened within my first couple of years at ShotSpotter when I was on a ride along in Baltimore. As you pros know ride alongs are theater events with the primary objective of keeping civis safe.
Houston Mayor Turner and Police Chief Acevedo announced plans to deploy ShotSpotter, a program that makes it easy for police to pinpoint gunfire across the city.

They always leave out the part that responding officers get the recorded snippet of the gunfire alert, effectively triple insuring it is a gunfire event along situational intelligence which reduces risk for *everyone*.
Question-If you know that less than 10% of shooting incidents are ever reported typically 3-5 minutes after and 300 feet away from the gunshot....what would be any reason(s) not to implement a digital 90%+, 30-45sec, 20 meter location accuracy solution?
@Suntimes
@CSTopinion
Kinda like a 911 Caller (that doesn’t call for fear of retribution) but with tools (eg playback recordings of multiple outdoor sensors) combined with training + experience. BtW- LE gets the recorded gunfire snippet as well with the real time alert to verify.

It is much more impactful to take 10 shooters off the street vs 500 guns. Gun confiscation is nice but without the shooter(s) it is of little value. Focus on the shooter by being smart on the shootings.

If *those* critics were being honest they would say exactly that…BUT then as you correctly point out they would have to acknowledge the placement decision is driven by data that shows that is where gunfire is happening AND where victimization occurs. Not an exciting argument. 😵💫
