My final story for
@politico
, with news:
The Biden administration considered publicly releasing data detailing how prevalent Covid spread was inside individual hospitals, but ultimately chose to keep that information private, per two people familiar.
Love my elastomeric. I've been wearing one for awhile bc I had a hard time finding a N95 that sealed on me. Cheaper, reusable, comfy. I like the GVS Elipse.
So much a fashion statement that a makeup artist in Sephora once asked me where to get one. 😉
The company has killed about 1,500 animals, including more than 280 sheep, pigs and monkeys, following experiments since 2018, according to the records and sources.
My reporting is based on dozens of Neuralink documents and interviews with more than 20 current and former employees, previously unreported messages, audio recordings, emails, presentations and reports.
We identified four experiments involving 86 pigs and two monkeys that were marred in recent years by human errors. The mistakes weakened the experiments’ research value and required the tests to be repeated, leading to more animals being killed, my sources said.
@politico
The decision to withhold the names, based partly on fears of embarrassing hospitals + on concerns about duplicative data, denies patients the opportunity to steer clear of health systems w/ poor track records and allows facilities to avoid public scrutiny, patient advocates say.
@politico
“Not knowing what the likelihood of getting transmission in the hospital really impacts an individual's ability to quote unquote ‘make a personal decision’ on their risk levels,” said
@SeeMiaRoll
, who has a lung condition that makes her more susceptible to Covid.
@politico
@SeeMiaRoll
Over the past mo, hospitals reported an avg of 1,457 patients per week had caught Covid during their stay, per a
@POLITICO
analysis of data from
@HHSGov
.
That follows a record month in Jan. when more than 3,000 patients each week were infected.
Other advocates told me they intend to keep pressing.
“A majority of voters want HHS to level with us – tell us how much coronavirus is spreading in the particular hospital we go to,” said
@mattbc
. "But that transparency is inconvenient for the powerful hospital lobby.”
The discussions, which took place across the administration, and have not been previously disclosed, involved a scenario in which 200 or fewer Americans die per day from Covid.
The U.S. has never sustained that level of deaths.
One person involved in the conversations said it was an effort to gauge what the American public would “tolerate.”
“500 a day is a lot. You still have 9/11 numbers in a week... People generally felt like 100 [a day] or less, or maybe 200, would be OK.”

You're right that the photos in the article are not the Elipse. I regularly wear it for that long in any case. I haven't had this issue. But everyone's face is different. Finding the right mask is like finding the right pair of jeans. Not one size fits all. :)
Today’s my last day at POLITICO and I’m leaving the CMS beat. Despite most Americans having never heard of this massive federal agency, it is brimming with big, public accountability stories. I’d argue it’s one of the best beats a reporter could have.

The complaint adds to scrutiny facing Neuralink.
In Dec, we reported Neuralink is under federal investigation for potential animal welfare violations.
We reported internal complaints re: experiments being rushed, causing needless suffering + deaths.
@Reuters
@neuralink
@USDA
Given
@USDA
cleared Neuralink's facilities during 8 visits, US investigators believe there is merit in reviewing the USDA's oversight as it considers potential animal-welfare violations, said the individuals who are familiar with the investigation.
@TaylorLorenz
Direct air flow above seat downward. My understanding is you should be getting more air that’s gone through the filtration that way.
Consider fit testing your N95 beforehand. Unless your health care provider somehow offers this (unlikely), you’d have to buy a kit (~$150).
The USDA was especially accommodating under former President Trump, when the agency allowed researchers to avoid animal-welfare violations if they reported them first. This includes
@neuralink
during a 2019 incident.
USDA rescinded the policy last year.
In some hospitals, they aren't masking at all + haven't been for a few months.
My mom had been getting chemo in Florida this spring. Nurses wore no masks + other cancer patients were also of course there.
This is true not just in FL. My story from May:
Musk has expressed frustration about the slow progress at his co, Neuralink, per people familiar. The company he’s talked with, Synchron, is ahead on getting regulatory approval for the tech, which broadly would allow paralyzed ppl to control computer apps w their minds alone.
@TaylorLorenz
I also second elastomeric respirators. I tried many N95 brands & struggled to find one that sealed on my face.
I often wear the GVS Ellipse. It retails for ~ $40 and is reusable. CDC says you can reuse elastomeric filters for a year. It has P100 filters, higher protection.

This follows our earlier report which found the USDA's watchdog, the Office of the Inspector General, is investigating Neuralink, a medical device company that is developing brain implants, over potential animal-welfare violations.
There's precedent for this. In the spring I wrote about an immunocompromised woman who went to the
@NIH
for a study on Covid who was instructed to swap her N95 for a surgical mask.
I also documented this happening at hospitals around the country.
This is a helpful piece. Esp the advice about blowing your nose first. I wonder, do most people know to do that before testing?
It's not in the directions I've seen for the various rapid tests in the US. No PCR proctor here has asked me to either (tho they did in Netherlands).

Meanwhile people walk by with old surgical masks on, no problem.
IDK why hospitals can’t get this figured out. 🤷🏽♂️
@TaylorLorenz
I only recently tried out the 3M Aura N95s. They are the only disposables I’ve found that fit me well, and I find them super comfy and light. But they won’t fit everyone.
