Look y’all… when someone posts a pic of their dog/cat, or their tasty beverage, or a yummy snack, or a bit of nature- just hit the like button and move on. WTF is wrong with you not wanting to spread joy that costs nothing….
“death rates among working age people – those 18 to 64-years-old – are up 40 percent in the third and fourth quarter of 2021 over pre-pandemic levels.”
“He said the data shows COVID deaths are greatly understated among working age Americans.”
This is harm. This is lasting harm. And it makes me soooo angry to think of people in positions of privilege demanding things to be normal, when they were least likely to be bearing the costs.
BTW…. The cumulative body of evidence says that kids can & do drive transmission of COVID within communities, as they do for all respiratory viruses. Masks reduce this. The reason they didn’t appear to do so early on in the pandemic is that they were more sheltered than adults.
Dr Jha, if we had a meeting scheduled tomorrow and I emailed to say I had COVID: cough and rhinorrhea for 2 days; never a fever; and headache on day 1 but now resolved (I’m “better”) are we still meeting at your office? If so, what precautions are you taking?
OK -- so CDC has come out with new guidance saying if you have COVID
Isolate while you have a fever but...
you can stop isolating once your fever is better and symptoms are resolving
Seems right to me
What you ask? Has the science changed? Why do this now?
Good questions
🧵
Just for the record, I also don’t want someone with the flu who says they “feel better” but is still coughing back at work either.
Maybe we can find ways to support not making people work while they are sick.
So if a COVID positive kid has a high risk classmate, who has to stay home? Do the high risk kids need to declare their illness to everyone???
“Regardless of when isolation ends, the CDC recommends avoiding people who are at high risk of severe illness until at least day 11.”
Is it just me or do you walk into a high traffic store and see the elderly clerk behind the register wearing an N-95 as customers just la-de-dah around unmasked and think about how much WE failed them
So…. When COVID is shown to be associated with subsequent increased risk of neurovascular, cardiovascular, and thromboembolic disease….
Are we really going to argue about whether the excess mortality due to cardiovascular disease et al. is NOT due to COVID!!?!?
Every time someone says we are in a “different place” in the pandemic and “have the tools” to operate schools safely and without disruption… ask them how many local schools have classrooms with 6+ air exchanges per hour; had their HVAC systems upgraded?
Why?
Why would the CDC publish school guidance that will clearly increase the transmission of COVID to children in the same week it posts about the rising number of pediatric hospitalizations due to COVID and the need to increase vaccination rates?

Many have been dunking on Penn for taking Dr Kariko off a tenure path when she failed to get NIH funding for her lab- but we should note that our own institutions would likely have done the same. This isn’t about one institution- it’s the entire ecosystem of science funding.

Most people support the use of masks. Most people understand that spreading infections will increase absenteeism.
And while we are on the topic of possible hypocrisy- who is paying you speaker and consulting fees?

This is a profoundly ignorant take that you should be ashamed of.
You spend enough time on this app to know what your colleagues at some of the finest children’s hospitals in the world are experiencing- children suffering severe disease at numbers not seen in prior waves.

This is a 200 year old farmhouse that’s pretty loosely sealed. The first time I ever went in the cellar there were 2 large black rat snakes hanging out - keeps the mice in check 😬
We have an agreement that they stay in the cellar and I don’t burn the house down

Including annual flu, I’ve had 61 vaccinations since joining the Army in 1995

The vast majority of those doses were required under force health protection policy.
FDA approved COVID19 vaccines should be treated no differently.
I wouldn’t normally pick a fight on Twitter but physicians- especially pediatricians- debating whether reports of ⬆️ pediatric COVID admissions are a function of severity or some sort of hysteria are emboldening those who will implement policies that cause more harm

is rank with biases that COVID19 does not cause severe disease in children. It does. Children must be part of the vaccine strategy or they will continue to experience severe outcomes such as MIS-C and be a reservoir for infecting vulnerable adults 1/2
This is a telling reminder of how minimizers and disinformationists have perverted a health behavior that is intended to keep people safe. Masking for your own health or in solidarity with the vulnerable is a good thing.

Grandfather was with the baby- traditional robes and a long gray beard - grabbed my arm and said, through an interpreter- “I will tell her when she grows up that you came like an angel and saved her.” 😭😭💔
That war was shit and misery, but I hold on to that moment.
Getting a lot of responses to a tweet that really says something pretty obvious and conventional. This is not a call to make masks mandatory again in schools. It IS a call to think about what we need to do to reduce the burden of this disease across all age / risk groups.
@GoodishIntent
That evening I made rounds and the nurses were bathing the baby who now was doing great (a big morale boost).
2 hrs later, the night shift was giving the same baby a bath and when I pointed out the baby was already clean I got run out of unit. 🤣

Appreciate the people recognizing this article is a year old. Next tweet posts a link to the most current publications from the Society of Actuaries - pretty interesting ways to look at data
“The youngest age bands saw significant improvement in the last two quarters, but the working age population continues to see the highest A/E ratios.”
All age groups showing excess mortality - COVID excess mortality > non-COVID causes in all age groups 35 and over
Perhaps a certain heath economist that assured parents COVID was “mild” can calculate the economic impact of type 1 diabetes based on increased health expenditures over a lifetime, lost productivity, and shortened life span.
Findings like this are exactly the reason why I have always argued that children too deserve protection from a new virus. Relatively milder acute infection compared to adults does not exclude complications later on.

I’m well vaccinated and not too worried personally about death, but hoping to avoid chronic illness as best I can. Oh, and I’d like it if my illness didn’t result in someone else being harmed too…
When calculating "acceptable risk" to take during a pandemic, it would be important to know how many ICU beds are available at your local hospital. This information should be public.
Reposting a tweet I just saw from a private account-

I couldn’t agree more- thank you so much and congrats on reaching this next phase 💪❤️💪❤️
We haven’t been aggressive enough getting vaccine to those most at risk based on the initial epidemiology & we are losing control as it starts moving into the broader community. IMO new orders for Jynneos won’t come soon enough to break the outbreak without expanding eligibility.
