the cops are using teargas on a demonstration of mourning and outrage??? Who runs this show?? This is appalling. RUBBER BULLETS -- FOR A LEGIT PROTEST???
Biden actually seems happy to BE president; he likes America, and he isn’t peddling hate of the other side. Optimism and good-hearted ness came through. Such a striking contrast to his predecessor. We need that hopefulness.
I have never seen anything private equity touches that it doesn’t destroy. It exists solely as a cash machine for a very few people. It preys on the public by decimating health care, elder care, journalism.
I think it’d be good for more people to know that the exact same private equity executives responsible for destroying hundreds of jobs at Vice — Fortress Investment Group — are also responsible for destroying thousands of jobs at Gannett newspapers.
@NPRinskeep
how about "family leave?" Guess what ... helping someone die is about as much work as giving birth and helping launch them ... just thinking and elevating this idea!
I think we need to reframe this as an attack on Congress, not just the Capitol. This was an assault on a co-equal branch of government WHILE IN SESSION. Instigated by the President. One branch nearly assassinated another.
Eric Trump says “his father will leave the presidency with a powerful brand backed by millions of voters who will follow him “to the ends of the Earth”...he created the greatest political movement in American history and his opportunities are endless.”
The image of this Militarized, non-DC police force at the ready ...while DC residents are still standing in line to vote at this hour ... Past curfew bc of lines ... is stomach-turning.
A tiny paper broke the George Santos scandal, but no one paid attention Really good piece here - and kudos to North Shore Leader. The loss to all of us when news shuts down is immense.
@Rachel_Sennott
Did you use your gifts well - in service to others or simply offered to the world? Did you show up for friends and family? Did you try to walk with integrity ... keeping your word and pursuing conduct in line with your values? look for joy? Share joy? That is a worthy life.
Good news from one of THE most important elections this year. Now eyes on April: Liberal Judge Is First to Advance in Major Wisconsin Supreme Court Election
This is appalling. A reporter needs a bodyguard to do her work. Simply reporting on the President. Admin deeply resents the role of the press.
@AprilDRyan
has so much integrity.
@NoahBookbinder
And really, wouldn't you feel like a free-loader, vacationing free at your billionaire friend's house ALL THOSE YEARS without contributing a thing? How could you possibly make things equal? Hmmmm.
Seems worth pointing out. Ken says he was asked to pose for a photo with both men about ten years ago. Don’t know the circumstances but the explanation rings true. Just because you stand near someone doesn’t mean you are endorsing them.
Senior care is crushingly expensive. Boomers aren’t ready. Neither are us X-ers … this has to be a national, collective priority. You shouldn’t have to go bankrupt to care for the people you love.
Is it meet and right to do so? Here on Twitter? To say my beloved dad is in hospice at home? Well if word gets out we need prayers of all faiths that he feels safe and sure. We are so damn lucky to have had this time. Blessings to all in this hard, majestic, transcendent time.

I don’t care that she’s still employed by this venal farce of an administration. I will care when some dc lobby shop or some university hires her later and whitewashes this whole chapter.
My Grandmother Kept Telling Us About the Nazis. Now I Know Why. Achingly beautiful. She "detailed the changes that came as authoritarianism slowly gained power, incrementally at first, so that people became accustomed to them."
The GOP has so much to answer for. Threats, intimidation, power-points from the Oval Office to overthrow the US government. “Dirty tricks” of Nixon era are children’s games compared to this.
"The letter was also expected to inform clients of other proposed governance changes and lay out Mr. Black’s plan to donate $200 million to charities that support gender equality and fight sex trafficking." Hmmmmm. Sudden desire to fight sex trafficking? Who's following?
GOP Rep. Spartz: If the January 6 insurrectionists wanted to do an insurrection they would have succeeded. They were expressing themselves peacefully. It is un-American to call them insurrectionists, they are good Americans
God damn I am tired. A loved one teeters on the brink tonight; morphine and oxygen and a possible broken hip. I sat on floor and held his hand tonight while he tried to sleep.

Are you trolling with your headline? I don’t think it’s millennials. Half the people you cite - are dead! Or close to it! Epochs change. So do the players, and so so their tastes.

huge question. since we don't have a vote, no voting rep in Congress, and admin can overrule our own police ... yesterday's anonymous, lethally armed "we're with DOJ" troops are still unanswerable. Who do we turn to?
Weeping. A full day of navigating healthcare, since who knew my co. insurance ended Nov 30? and the new offerings are as clear as mud. I have rarely felt so broken but now my Dec appts are not covered and it's not clear what is covered by this new service. America.

how is this not terrorism? They attacked a federal building, endangered federal workers and members of Congress, shot someone - or caused her to be shot - how is this any different? insurrection is insufficient. So say I.

Pine Martin was far too delicate to leave his bed, so they brought the lovely spring day to him. They filled his room with sweet woodruff & the birds took it in turns to perch on the thatch & sing their fair songs to him, songs of the sun-fellen leaves & of soft whirled nests.
So ... being dead is expensive. Learned this week that it will cost $22k to bury my parents' ashes together in a local cemetery. How do people do this? (I can't "scatter." It's not them.)
Prayers tonight for a friend who has been taking care of Elders; her mom passed tonight from Covid; her dad has it too, as does she. MN is a hot zone. So many lives, so much love and care, just ended, over on a I-Pad. Wear your damn mask.
Ok I'm tooting my own horn but in spirit that it might help anyone caring for an Elder.

I learned this the hard way moving to the Midwest in early 90s. No disrespect - just different conversational style. Fast, animated, energetic (as I was used to) - was off-putting, I learned. Just different. Good to learn.

I'll be honest: I do not know how to handle the accelerating Covid threat here, a parent in hospice AND the siege on democracy. Forget self-care. It isn't working. Six more days ...
this was from last year and I discovered I'd screenshotted it b/c it was so lovely. Thank you

for all the magic and comfort you put into the world. To say nothing of your glorious language.
OK bring it. I do work through a public radio network in TX. And another, national, you know. But killing children, and allowing women to die who do not want to give birth? I'm not supposed to have an opinion, publicly. But why have a society if it can't take care of people?
@publicroad
ah, speaking as an Old, I see this for the serious gaslighting it is ... and how pathetic, how lame and how impotent he must have been feeling. I mean seriously, the guy could paint but he sure couldn't handle rejection.
I am trying to get my mind around the suddenness of death from virus. Meanwhile my dear sweet younger cousin died this week, from cancer, with no one allowed at her side until the very end. Be gentle to everyone.
This 1970 book gave a generation of girls permission to know, understand and not be ashamed of our bodies. It was monumental. Now the GOP would like to return us to shame, ignorance and submission. I'm not going back.

Degraded. Decompensating. Still knows all the buttons to push but the vulgarity is the tell - he is scared. He needs an angry crowd to reassure him he's not alone. It is unspeakable that this man holds the nation's highest office.

I once had to estimate the weight of dolly track and cameras to the lbs/sq foot for a short filming inside the Rotunda. I can tell you Planks Under Tanks doesn’t cut it.
I have WAMU on much of the day. I donate, well above the minimum, monthly. What is so damn hard about doing basic DC news and running the most listened to channel in the nation’s capital? These folks work so hard. We need WAMU.
For any folks who love the stories from WAMU and DCist please share your support for this staff. I can't even describe my anger, but the staff deserve so much more than what has been going on for too long.

We made our way around Europe with our backpacks and a Eurail pass and got messages at American Express offices where our friends/parents knew to send letters we’d eventually pick up in whatever new city. Then we’d connect and wander foreign cities for hours w friends.

it's 12:30 and I've finished writing a eulogy for my dad, for a teeny-tiny family funeral we are holding tomorrow. (thanks, Covid, we'll do fun one in April). How in God's name am I supposed to sketch a life in under ten minutes? God help me it will be meager in comparison.

No disrespect but I don't think "has since recovered." is the right headline. What about, "Supreme Court nominee withheld health details ahead of her confirmation." Less-than-transparent for a lifetime post deciding our laws is not a good look.
Breaking WaPo: Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett was diagnosed with the coronavirus earlier this year but has since recovered, three officials familiar with her diagnosis told The Washington Post.

I like how home healthcare workers are included bc w/out them we are immobile as a society. They are gird and bridge, allowing families to work and have loved ones cared for.
