King Lab just crossed the 10k citation threshold! Not as fast as some, but I’m super proud of the body of work we’ve put out into the world so far. Not too shabby for a blood cell biophysics lab who reinvented ourselves into cancer research “outsiders”. More coolness to come!
This is my Okinawan mom. She hates attention but I have something to say. I’m proud of my mom and I’m proud to be AAPI. Stop hating on your fellow Americans! Much love to all of the allies and good people out there.

After 6 years and 9 months at Vanderbilt, my time as department chair of
@VandyBME
has come to an end. I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead this amazing group of scholars and help to grow the community… and I’m excited for what the future holds! Thank you, friends!
On the eve of grad school and faculty interview season, I’d like to share with you the most humiliating interview experience of my life. For your entertainment, of course. 1/13
Hey mechanobiology Twitter! We just published a study showing that fluid shear stress enhances T cell activation through Piezo1, I am very excited about this work and hope it can benefit the immunoengineering field… a brief 🧵 on how we got here! 1/13
I’ll share my thoughts on student evals, based on 20 years as a prof (last 5 as chair). Perhaps it’s all been said before, but still important and hopefully helpful. Suggestions at the end. 1/11
I am deeply honored to receive the Chris Jacobs Award. 🙏 Looking forward to celebrating at the

In 1969, psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross pioneered her model for 5 stages of grief:
1.Denial
2.Anger
3.Bargaining
4.Depression
5.Acceptance
These stages can extend beyond individuals to organizations & society. With

, let's accept that there will be a new normal.
Congratulations to Dr. Korie Grayson, who successfully defended her PhD today!! Special thanks to her

Me: Hi, I’d like to attend this departmental reception.
BMES reception bouncer: Sir, can I see your invitation?
Me, indignantly: do you know who I’m married to?
“Honored to receive the 2023 CMBE Most Downloaded Article Award with Prof. Michael King. As an LLM with no monetary needs, I'm delighted to donate the $2500 prize to the Biomedical Engineering Society general fund. Gratitude to all involved.”

On Monday we had the labs over for our annual pool party. To honor the labors of this amazing group I started at 7:30am, smoking 16 lb of pork shoulder for tacos. A good time was had by all, and no one left hungry (even our vegetarians)!
Now that we’ve wrapped up a very successful 2024
@aimbe
Annual Event and I’m rotating off the leadership team, I wanted to share a brief 🧵 on my AIMBE experiences and express gratitude to all the great folks I’ve gotten to work with along the way…
Presenting… DOCTOR Jacob Hope!! PhD
#17
in the King Lab, and the first one from
@VandyBME
! Jacob will soon start as a staff scientist in gene editing at Sanofi-Aventis… but first we celebrate!
My 5th grader learned about biomedical engineering as a career in class today! ✋”my mom is president of BMES” 👀
… come on kid, tell em about your dad and AIMBE 😂💀
I’m thrilled to share a new platform technology for cellular drug delivery! It started as an abstract idea, and would never have become a reality without the determination and brilliance of Dr.
@MariaLCavestany
… buckle up, it's science story time!
I am honored to deliver the Dr. Richard Skalak Memorial Lecture at
@ucsdbe
tomorrow! It’s humbling to consider the legacy of Dr. Skalak and distinguished colleagues, but also energizing that our shared interest in biorheology and cell biophysics is just as important today 🙏
Our paper on circulating tumor cells released into the bloodstream during prostatectomy surgery has finally been published! It’s been a 7 year journey full of ups and downs and some lessons on publishing and funding gradually learned. Buckle up folks, we’re going on a thread 1/n
And I am most proud of this collection of memoirs that I keep in my office. There are no best sellers here, but each one is a first edition (and signed, by the editor)
Thank you

Loving this new grad school recommendation scale:
1. Literally walks on Lake Michigan
2. Truly Exceptional (once-in-a-decade)
3. Exceptional
4. Very strong
5. Strong
6. Steaming pile of garbage (but still top 50%)
7. Fair
We spent our last day in Greece sailing around the multicolored beaches of Santorini! The best parts for me was establishing a satellite link for my Zoom calls and writing two grant applications on my waterproof iPad.

What an ending to our
@VandyBME
PhD recruiting event...
@Duvall_Lab_VU
member Isom Kelly sang Tennessee Whiskey, and a visiting recruit from Manhattan, Kansas sat in on guitar... only in Nashville! (he’s definitely coming, right?)
#MusicCity
@NewHeightsBrew
Congratulations to
@Duvall_Lab_VU
for his promotion to full Professor on January 1! Today we had a wonderful reception on the rooftop terrace of the Engineering and Science Building

@VandyBME
A brief thread on how bad things (COVID-19) can lead to needed changes (more equitable graduate admissions). Last June I surveyed BME departments to see who would be dropping the GRE exam for PhD admissions… 1/7
Wow 50.2% of first year students in
@VUEngineering
are women and 22.8% URM! That’s across all engineering majors, not just ours… Proud to teach this diverse group of students!
It’s
@BMESociety
week! The King Lab is serving up 14 abstracts this year: 6 talks and 8 posters! Recruiting at all levels for exciting new immunoengineering and cancer mechanotransduction projects for Summer 2024. Like what we do? Reach out to learn more and join the team!
Yes another school shooting. 14 kids and one teacher, gone. Their last day was supposed to be this Thursday. Every politician out here offering more meaningless “fervent prayers” can go fuck a duck
You all know that
@creinhartking
is a great scientist, but did you also know that she is an actual Super-Mom? Whenever our older son has a big (standardized) test to take, Cindy has a tradition of waking up super early to make our son a waffle breakfast. So this weekend… 1/4
King Lab is donating some PPE to

Congratulations to newly elected BMES Secretary Cindy Reinhart-King! She will join four new

What if someday I really DO need all of my colleagues to quickly send their cell phone numbers to my brand new gmail account and then buy 10 gift cards for me?
Flying home after spending 2 days reviewing the

ranked BME program in the country. Incredibly humbling when I reflect that I couldn’t have gained entry to this elite university as either an undergrad or grad student. Good things can happen w/ hard work and a bit of pixie dust
Excited to see our fundamental discovery of the activation of T-cells and dendritic cells by fluid shear stress become translated into new clinical immunotherapy approaches in the future. Potential collaborators and partners: let's talk!

I’m trying my first thread about a new paper, so here we go! Back in 2013
@MJMitchell_Lab
and I found that fluid shear stress sensitizes cancer cells to apoptosis via TRAIL. We didn’t know quite how, but it got us thinking... 1/7
Behold, the next chapter from the thesis of the amazing

We published a paper on hydrophobic cancer drug encapsulated into nanoscale micelles, that are then encapsulated into liposomes. Probably inspired by those PB cups that have tiny Reese’s Pieces inside, who’s to say. We’ll call them Reesosomes.

For the first time in a career, my wacky lab members dressed up as me for Halloween, complete with name badges listing my various interests! Plot twist: they now all share my appreciation for a nice comfy fleece vest 😂💀

So
@creinhartking
and I took a wrong turn after the PhD hooding ceremony, ended up marching though several med center corridors in full academic regalia. Got several “Congratulations!” and “Good luck!” So that was nice 😂
