New Zealand has the highest youth suicide rate in the world. Every National MP just voted against a measure that would materially improve this stat. That's repulsive.
At the risk of offending the entire Horowhenua District, Waitārere Beach is a gem, but the car culture on the beach is pure garbage. The last thing I should be worried about when building sandcastles with my son on a beach is him running into oncoming traffic.
Out in Newtown last night and I thought this was such a fantastic example of density done well. These houses are lifting the character and value of Newtown, not taking away from it!
Nothing I can add that hasn't already been said kindly about Jacinda today, just a massive thank you. What I am left with is the question of why would any woman want to run for office in this country? The misogyny and abuse is unreal.
Good thing the right-wing of this country haven't spent the past two years on a prolonged scare campaign to convince the public there is no need for water reform...
Absolutely stoked to announce I'll be running for Labour in Takapū/Northern Ward this October. As someone who has started my family here in Johnsonville, I want Wellington to be an exciting, vibrant place for my son to grow up.
I have a standing apology for council meetings over this month due to being on paternity leave and this morning Cr Chung voted not to accept it. Geez, I wonder where the 'dysfunction' in this council originates from?
This is the Wgtn Green Gecko (Moko Kākāriki). Native to Wgtn but found especially in Johnsonville & Tawa. Wgtn Zoo want to make this guy a symbol of our city, 100% on board.
Fun fact about why they say Wellington is unbeatable on a good day. Scientists have proven that a good day in Wellington is anywhere from 10-20% gooder than anywhere else in the world, hence unbeatable.
PSA to any parents with a Mocka crib out there. The ACCC issued a warning about potentially dangerous mould last week. Checked the bottom of ours and yup gross. Baby has been sleeping on this for 6 months.
There are 5,000 carparks in Newtown. The proposed cycleway takes out less than 200. It's the parking management plan which is trying to balance needs of residents, visitors, hospital staff and patients that is the issue. But hey, who needs context?
If an MP from any political party had shown up in an ambulance last year when I was hospitalised for campylobacter, there are not enough swear words in the English language for what my reaction would've been.
Combine this with the move to build less housing units by focusing on greenfields over density as well as gutting our biggest single housing builder (Kāinga Ora) and the Nats are simply not credible on housing policy this election.
Having only one nationwide broadcaster who are reliant on state funding doesn't sound like a healthy basis for a media ecosystem to me. Terrible news for those at Newshub.
We're pretty awesome at short-sighted decisions in Wellington but Kiwirail have really taken it to the next level. Let's see how things look in a year inside the station.
Fun fact about Te Araroa (where last night quake was off coast of). NZ's oldest & largest pohutakawa lives there. He's a pic of Te Waha O Rerekohu I took last year on a visit.
My $0.02 to the Wellington sux discourse. My wife and I could've started our family in Sydney. We'd have had higher pay, more relatives, better climate etc. but we moved because we knew we'd have a fundamentally better quality of life in Pōneke. This city is fantastic.
Underwhelming. More (incredibly) expensive greenfields, adding congestion with an extra 5200+ cars in the Wgtn region and no demonstrable PT improvements.
LGWM is not perfect, but at its core it tries to move more people in fewer vehicles. This is the opposite.
So, National intend to blatantly ignore how Wellingtonians vote and impose their 20th century ideology on said voters - overturning the outcomes of previous consultations and undoing years of work - all at the tipping point of a climate crisis

This election result really is going to pit Wellington against the direction of the new govt. Hard to say Wellingtonians haven't endorsed Labour/Greens given electorate/PV results.
A small but powerful takeaway from visiting the local foodbank yesterday: they cannot get enough paper supermarket bags. The bags allow their customers to walk away with dignity as it looks like they've just been to the supermarket themselves.
Another incoming Post hit job on the mayor due shortly that apparently requires the input of city councillors. This time it's for Tory having the audacity to fly places to represent Wellington.
This was a real moment of leadership from Andy in the last triennium. For him to now attach himself to a party that is actively demonizing the trans community is a major fall from grace.
Winston Peters confirms former Wellington Mayor Andy Foster will be contesting the Mana electorate for NZ First.
He has been an NZ First candidate in the past, most recently 2017
Another incoming Post hit job on the mayor due shortly that apparently requires the input of city councillors. This time it's for Tory having the audacity to fly places to represent Wellington.
Another huge month of growth across the cycle network but I want to call out the incredible growth at the Basin Reserve now the new pathway is in, over 90% growth year on year!
Shout out to the all the young political activists that've worked relentlessly to ban conversion therapy the last few years. This is your victory! 🏳️🌈
Judging by Twitter right now you'd think the left won the election. The parties forming the new govt outpolled Lab/Grb/TPM by 318k votes and the high of the Greens was more than offset by the collapse in Labour vote. Not much positive in there IMO.
One more huge thank you to the people of Takapū for your support. Making this a city that's affordable, accessible and resilient is going to be a hell of a job but I'm 100% up for it. Taking a day to relax today before the hard work kicks off. Ngā mihi!
Council by-elections can traditionally be a bit boring, but with Wellington's Green dominance, this one's proving quite intriguing.
Will the Greens once again be victorious, or could a successful businessman shake things up?
@IsaPearlRitchie
My assumption is it must be MIQ. I think most overseas places have had open borders during omi (US/UK/VIC/NSW) so that has seeded extra chains of transmission. With 60/70 a cases a day in MIQ atm that's 60/70 individual chains of spread we're currently avoiding.
If I didn't want a major media campaign against my party leader which highlights said leader referring to people as "bottom feeders" I would simply refrain from nominating a person that calls people "bottom feeders" as my party leader.
Cute email alert. A resident emailed me saying their 7 yr old read my name as Ben McNuggets on my election flyer and was happy to hear I was voted in. He wanted to know what I do now I've made it in. Free nuggets for all?
Cannot stress the absolutely gigantic amount of work happening in WCC (& others across NZ) to prepare for 3W. The least National could do is get their policy into the public so councillors can make decisions in less of a vacuum. Cowardly stuff.
That was... a day but I am really happy to get the Golden Mile revitalization underway. Want to thank Mayor Whanau for leading it all,
@IonaPannett
for fighting the good fight and all the watermelons 🔴🟢
⚠️📢 Update from WCC on how we're supporting Auckland flood efforts:
1. We've offered 6 staff today to help the National Emergency Management Office grapple with need for surge staff. 10 from the Wgtn Emergency Response Team have also volunteered. More may follow.
Chch results in, despite Mauger win a 9/8 left majority in council. Kāpiti, Labour mayor. Hutt, big left wins. Auckland, split despite big Brown win. Maybe not quite the right-wing landslide the media was playing it up to be off the back of progress results on Sat?
I'll just make two points:
1) WCC has a AA+ credit rating, Venezuela has a C. I know which one of those I would classify as a crisis.
2) The LTP budget isn't adopted until June 2024 so I really struggle with how we're "too late".
These pieces are bordering on hysteria.
Have double checked with our staff what this means for cycle/pedestrian and bus upgrade projects already approved. They should all fall into the contractually obligated bucket. It will however impact our long-term plan with projects still to be approved.
Fun fact about why they say Wellington is unbeatable on a good day. The Town Belt Act contains a little known clause which states inferring that any other local government area is superior to Wellington carries a penalty of 6 months imprisonment or up to a $20,000 fine.
This is good actually. I studied almost entirely via distance, could speed up slow lecturers to 1.5x speed, work delivering Uber Eats at peak times and still made the Dean's List twice.
Apparently the 'heritage' is that a flying boat service was run from this wharf for three years in the 1950's. That's the bar for binding a future council to limited flexibility if something goes wrong. Sometimes this is a deeply unserious city.
The Regent International apartment building in Hangzhou, China, has over 20,000 people living in it. The building is 206 meters tall and has 36 to 39 floors. It has swimming pools, barber shops, nail salons, medium-sized supermarkets, and internet cafes.
@NicolaWillisMP
@michaelwoodnz
With all due respect Nicola, the WCC city streets team do real consultation and do it well. There'll be a raft of changes made from public submissions and even more after public hearings. With Ngaio they were making changes up to the day before voting based off public feedback.

. I won't bother with a letter to the editor as who knows if it'd be published.
The $6m is fully refundable + costs and secured by a bank guarantee from Westpac. We can walk away at 4 stages and get our $ back too.
Happy to loop you in on any of the other facts.
These comments on abortion from
@HareteHipangoMP
are disgusting so I've made a donation to Steph Lewis who stands an extremely good chance in winning Whanganui.
Send a msg & donate @ the link below:
You think National can’t go much lower? Well you’re wrong.
These TWO National MP’s are showing they are the lowest of the low.
Using abortion, or using those who may choose to, or have to have an abortion, to make disgusting points that are unrelated to this story is gross.
Last week I spoke with the owner of one of the heritage properties we delisted in our District Plan. For them, it was "the end of a nightmare that has been going on for years". This isn't and shouldn't be accepted as normal.
My bold prediction: Winston and Seymour will engage in an even bigger dick swinging contest based on tonight's numbers and Luxon won't be able to reign them in hurting Nats. Leadership spill before next election.
Want to shout out
@grogersxyz
and the work
@rentersunited
are doing with WCC. We're the first NZ city to partner with MBIE to provide rental inspection services as part of a pilot. Already we've had our team take action at a Hataitai property where sewage leaked into a bedroom.
It’s funny the things you come across when you fall down a rabbit hole of the history of destiny church being bigoted assholes.
@ponekeben
, even 16 year old you was cool.
Sure there's special votes to come, but turnout in Manurewa, Māngere and Panmure-Ōtāhuhu is down around a third from 2020. Labour lose big when we don't give voters in the heartland a reason to turn out.
