Today was a flaming hot tire fire of endless ZOOM meetings and countless kid fights.
I swear this is true: I had a bowl of cereal for dinner, which I ate while taking a hot shower. That’s my new “me time”, eating cereal in the shower.
Don’t judge me.
@FnpMarieOH
Folks, I’ve been diving In submersibles (eg the HOV Alvin) for 25 years. In general, the simpler the tool the better. A submersible is better off with robust, uncomplicated hardware.
@gingot1
@FnpMarieOH
Great question. Submersibles are unthethered. They are taken to the study site and deployed by ship or barge. The ships usually track the sub via an onboard beacon, and try to maintain comms with the sub crew. Losing voice comms is not uncommon; losing tracking is more worrisome.
@FnpMarieOH
Poking fun at the game controller is fun cuz it’s an easy target, but I will tell you that lots of undersea vehicle use similar controllers. Why? They’re intuitive. What REALLY MATTERS is the physical design and integrity of any sub, as well as the control and safety systems.
@FnpMarieOH
To be clear I AM NOT defending OceanGate, but I encourage you to ask questions such as “is that typical for submersibles?” Or even “What’s the least conventional thing about this sub?” That way experienced folks can answer and you can decide for yourself about the company.
@cassidyllc
@sarahroseetter
Great idea, but honestly it depends of the severity of the allergy, as well as the nature of the allergen. It also depends on how well the mask fits. Think of the mask as a way to reduce the infiltration of allergens by, say, 90% or so. But if the remaining 10% are enough to

Absolutely not a common build.
Most submersibles are titanium or a high strength alloy. Some shallower diving subs are half steel/half acrylic dome.
My parents came to the US in 1969 from a small farming town in Egypt.
My dad earned his PhD then built a successful company.
My mom designed motors for spacecraft then had two kids all within 10 years of arriving here.
Both her kids are now university professors.
And you?
@KemptBones
@FnpMarieOH
You are very welcome. Like you, I deeply appreciate it when folks on Twitter share their expertise. I have learned so much about so many things, from tree physiology to art history.
After a day of being annnoyed about a grant rejection, I'm over it. And that, my friends, was the first lesson I learned as an pre-tenure professor: Never hitch your sense of self-worth to anyone else's estimation. Damn it's hard, but don't do it. 1/2
Plastic lawn flamingos are effective seafloor markers, helping you relocate study sites during a deep-sea expedition. Local breweries may also barter beers in exchange for photos from 2,452 meters below sea level (beer used for post-cruise debriefings only).

Great question! The short answer is that they do (though not sure if ALL do). The research submersible Alvin can drop eco-friendly steel plates and float to the surface. Even if they run out of primary battery power, there are four emergency batteries that can drop the weights

@FnpMarieOH
We can debate the pros and cons of COTS controllers. Note that If the controller fails, they certainly have onboard backups. I would suggest that it’s not likely to result in any cataclysmic issues. The hull integrity, life support, power management…all those are what matter.
I LOVE my boys.
While watching Perseverance, I said that Mach 2 is about 700 meters per second. The young fellow in this picture said “I don’t think that’s true on Mars because the atmosphere is different, so you better look into that”. 😳☺️😍
Congrats to DOCTOR Brandon Enalls on successfully defending your Ph.D.! your talk was a tour de force, showing us how some microbes help make vent chimneys and how other microbes pack away carbon for a "rainy day" (metaphorically speaking). You rock, Dr. Enalls!
@HarvardOEB
In the midst of this pandemic, there are moments of delight. My son & I made baba ghanoush by grilling eggplant over coals & apple wood chips. We cooked it until it split, removed skin, mixed in tahini, lemon & zest, garlic cloves, cumin & salt.Topped with Aleppo peppers. YUM.
Our lab has room for one more postdoc! Is that you? 🤔 We are especially keen on those who study marine symbiosis and want to join a growing team of symbiosis folk, courtesy of the

DM me if you’re interested.

Exactly. In addition, we also have a limited understanding of how to use advanced materials such as carbon fiber composites fatigue under pressure. They have been used before, but not always successfully. We have much to learn about how these materials fatigue over time.
Heartbroken that the Ocean Sci. Meeting

Am I disappointed? Absolutely.
Did they make the right decision? Absolutely.

Today, my 7 1/2 year old son said “Instead of screen time, can we go stargazing again? I have many questions about the universe.”
My oldest son replied “life, the universe, and everything”.
😍 The Gods were kind to me today.
Yo! To promote diversity in scholarship, Harvard is hiring tenure-track asst. professors from across ALL the sciences! This is great for those who don't easily fit into a dept "box". Those who identify as URMs are especially encouraged to apply. 1/2
This. So much this. My skin tone changes dramatically from summer to winter (esp when I was a kid and outside all the time). The difference in how I am treated (light being better than dark) is palpable. Nothing else about me differs. It’s a crummy feeling, folks.
@MiraclesArt
@FnpMarieOH
The HOV Alvin is also controlled by joysticks and knobs but it is a completely different submersible.
I would encourage you not to dwell on the controller. Listen to some of the experts and you’ll get a sense of their concerns.
Folks have been reaching out to ask about the missing submersible. I am happy to answer any questions about how submersibles work etc. but that’s it.
FYI I am not affiliated with OceanGate.
Also FYI I will not speculate on what’s happened. No good comes from such conversations.
My friend is putting together a program to bring together a "top-notch" chef & a marine conservation scientist to co-lead a sustainable seafood cooking demo w/a follow-on talk about ocean conservation.
Any of you marine conservation scientists interested? You will be paid.
Congrats to DOCTOR Jessica Mitchell, who just wrapped up her PhD defense. It was a spectacular talk! Dr. Mitchell is a brilliant scholar who (along with Dr.

Alright, Twitter folk, I'm gonna try something audacious.
This coming Monday (3/16), you're welcome to join me in my "ZOOM Cafe" from 4-5 PM for some sciencey / family chit-chat. Bring a cup o' Joe and let's hang out and chat. Hop on if you're bored.
The nation of Tonga has been just hit by a tsunami. The Tongan people are wonderful, and vulnerable to tsunamis as well as sea level rise from climate change. Please keep an eye on how this unfolds. They will likely need help.
Our lab is looking for a postdoc to join our team. Read all about it below & pass along as you see fit.
PS: We believe that diversity, inclusivity, & a healthy work environment are the key to excellent science. We look forward to seeing your application.
When I was an assistant professor in the early 2000s, one of my senior colleagues told me that my research was “antiquated, practically dead, and altogether meaningless”.
They barely spoke to me after that…until I got tenure. Then, it seemed to me, s/he started speaking with me
New PIs, do you ever struggle to get more senior researchers/professors to take you seriously?
Is this an experience more common for minorities in science/academia? for women? queer folk?
Do we have data on this?
What do I do to fight off insomnia? Drive to the lab, of course, and check out the new titanium high pressure reactors. Don’t worry Rachel, I didn’t turn the pump up to “11”.
I’m goddamn tired from being on ZOOM for 6-10 hours every day.
ZOOM forces us to meet in 15,30,45 & 60 minute quanta & I believe we end up talking to fill the time. I’m going to aim for fewer ZOOMs and instead have more brief phone calls, emails, & slack messages.

My first dive in the ALVIN submersible with a senior scientist who used a photocopied map for navigation.
We were lost then ran out of battery power so we had to shut down EVERYTHING in the sub to get home.
Truth is we weren’t in any real danger…but I didn’t know that!😵💫

Great question! The submersibles I dive in have hatches that CAN be opened from the inside so long as the water pressure isn’t keeping it closed. In other words I can easily open it from the inside if we are floating on the surface, but not if we are underwater.
Im so grateful to be the recipient of the 2024 Capt. Don Walsh Prize for Ocean Exploration. It is sincerely humbling.

The Alvin submersible is based on decades of tried and true technology. Many of the controls are quite simple. For example, on the Alvin submersible oxygen is delivered into the sphere using a mechanical valve that is arguably simpler and safer than an electronic control system.
So...when should I start worrying about my son, who spends much of his time pretending to be a duck and has taken to sitting in a “nest” (plastic box)?
Our neighbor has chickens.
Our boys play with the neighbor’s chickens.
Owen decided to buy them some bird feed to say “thanks”.
The neighbors were so grateful they gave us three chicks and a small coop.
The obvious moral of the story is that no good deed goes unpunished.
Thanks, dear friends, for all the kind words about the Moore Foundation Investigator award. I really appreciate it! Honestly, it's a great honor that MANY of my colleagues deserve as much as any of us awardees. I hope to represent our community well.

Siri changed it to read "You have the breasts ideal."

~8 years ago, I was pulled over and held against a telephone pole by police with guns drawn because I “matched a description of someone who broke into a house” a few blocks away.
Good thing I didn’t storm the Capitol yesterday; I’d be a chalk outline now.
You know what I mean.

One of the weirdest professional experiences I’ve had is, hands down, being told the deep-sea vent tube warms, which I had brought back and kept alive in the lab, were the souls of the damned per Leviticus (I think).
The person was serious, and that experience was truly bizarre.
Tree people, I often see these snow-free zones around trees, and my inner physiologist immediately goes to warmer soil temps around trees due to metabolic heat. Is it that, or solar conduction through the tree? Both? Something else, inc. artifacts? Is there literature on this?
Folks, I’m proud to share the

Indeed there are commercially available beacons that, more or less, do what you’re describing .
Did they have one on this sub? I don’t know for sure but the reports from folks with firsthand experience suggests they didn’t.

There has also been a lot of confusion about homemade masks .

I have an iPhone 12 Pro that burned through 400 GB of cellular data last month!
The Apple store folks said my phone was hacked (it was not) so I reset it. Verizon said it was my “location services” settings (it was not).
I took a while but I figured it out. Anyone wanna guess?
David Goodsell's work is an astonishing and effective way of "seeing" microbes with our own eyes. It's art in its own right, and it packs technically accurate information about the cellular layout of microorganisms.

If you want an opinion about what you're doing, scientifically or otherwise, turn to those whom you trust. Ask them to be candid. But never, ever think of peer review as any objective view of who you are. You'll be miserable for no good reason!
@FirstGenPhys
This is our lab mascot Sparkles, who was collected from the Gulf of Mexico. Sparkles now spends his days in a boozy jar, inspiring lab folk and visitors alike. Sparkles gives great relationship advice, and told me to tell you to take care of yourself first and foremost!
Faculty, if you’re struggling to get “all the things done” (waves hands wildly), you’re not alone. Many of my colleagues have told me they are drowning in work. We spend a lot of time speculating as to “why”. I think there are a lot of factors at play.
Be kind to yourself.

Read this thread and see how real science works.
Scientists are not soothsayers. Scientists analyze data and provide objective interpretations. When new data emerge, or mistakes are found (sometimes happens), GREAT scientists reassess, respond, and retract as appropriate.
Thus, I believe I was wrong in the original assessment of a WA1 introduction, but correct in asserting significant community spread in Washington State on Feb 29. 17/18

Good question. The research submersibles I work with have top-mounted hatches that can be opened from the inside (and from the outside I believe).
Out of respect for the ongoing search, I’ll just say that the hatch design is unconventional at best, and deeply concerning at worst.
I’m feeling a lot of tension from y’all, so I’m going to drop a dad joke here and ask you to do the same for our Twitter friends.
