We help run FISH at Lincoln Baptist, a program to feed children during the school holidays in the Monks Abbey area in Lincoln. Astounding that families simply can’t afford to feed their children in the holidays. Something not right about that!
27% of children in Lincoln are living in poverty; this report notes that "the increase in child poverty in working families was widely anticipated and could have been avoided" ..in a supposedly civilised country this is a damning indictment on the current Tory government
Over the last 10 years I have served as:
Sole Pastor
Associate Pastor
Lead Pastor
Senior Pastor
When I first started out, I thought the first element of this title was important. What I have learned is that the second element is by far the most significant.
When it comes to church vacancies not being filled, I hear a lot - “they expect too much for too little pay.” Yet I think it more “I’m not willing to serve unless I have all my needs and dreams met.” A call to ministry is not dependent on the salary you want, the title you think…
With everyone debating about Christmas Day services at church … in 10 years of ministry in the UK, we have had a Christmas Day service every year. It’s not a debate, it’s what we do. Celebrating Jesus together just makes sense… still love you if you don’t go on Christmas Day!
In helping with ministry placement...
Churches - state your financial package on job description (including actual figures & benefits)
Applicants - drill down on what you can really live off (not just what would be ideal), the figure is often lower than you realize!
Attended Lampeter Evangelical Church in Wales yesterday. A wonderful village church with services in both English and Welsh. Pray for them in 2024 as they faithfully preach the Gospel!
Two years ago today we went to the American Consulate to get our visa to move to the US.
We left a growing church, a comfortable life and a settled environment because we were convinced that God was calling us to study, to prepare, to rest and to serve in a new way.
For not a…

“After the church service, spend 15 minutes speaking to only people you don’t recognise… then speak to your friends”
@geoffchang
- reminder that the church should be an example of Jesus welcoming people to the Kingdom
Coveting your prayers! After a consistent high Temp and now a continues dry cough, our eldest likely has Covid-19. As a family we will be isolating for the next 14 days. This picture was taken last year, pray her smile continues throughout this time!
If you are preaching on Easter Sunday - don’t be clever and try preach something new or different. Preach the resurrection with joy and conviction. Preach the risen Lord Jesus!
I love chapel at
@MBTS
, we sing together, pray together and learn together. My favourite thing to do is simply stand and listen to my fellow brothers & sisters sing!
There is a difference between knowing stuff about Jesus, and KNOWING Jesus.
“I had heard of you by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees you”
Job 42:5
If your Joy of knowing Jesus is diminished when life does not go the way you wanted, then your joy was not in Jesus but in your dreams/goals/hopes. Focus on Jesus, that He really is Joy Inexpressible!
Parents night at school tonight! My questions for the teachers are:
- is my daughter kind and gentle to others?
- is my daughter showing effort and willing to learn?
- is my daughter a friend to others?
Yes I care for their grades, but their character is more important!
@jasorourke
@washingborough
thank you for being a fantastic school for our kids! They love food, love eating healthy and we are abundantly blessed to have teachers and senior staff who care deeply. Thank you!

Proud husband moment - Having rolled up her sleeves to work in the school since Sept, at the height of lockdown Miriam will keep working at lunchtimes but will extend her hours to be a 1-2-1 support for a pupil in the school. Blessed to be her husband!

Three girls (aged 8 and 10) using very different methods to note take during the sermon - encourage your children to engage by note taking and don’t limit them to one particular method.
Preaching class today…
When presenting the Gospel story of Christs death, burial and resurrection there is no need to look at notes - you know the story! Look into the eyes of the people and plead them to come to Jesus!
On Sunday night
@jaredcwilson
shared at our monthly PTC residency evening:
“Preaching is not an information transfer. It might be initially, but its aim is more to the heart. The desire is to lead people to worship God”
Worship, not knowledge is the aim!

Witnessed my alcoholic father transform when meeting Jesus. I wanted what he had. He took me to Jesus and showed me that transformation was possible by the love of Jesus. At the age of 8, I met Jesus, my father by my side. Generations of alcoholics stopped that day! All for Jesus

@SpurgeonColl
- great to spend time with her last night and talk about what she learned. The best part was to see her excitement about how many people her age were there, she is not alone in her faith!
Through the last 2 years of living on support we have not missed a single meal, a single bill or a single payment.
Praise be to Jesus! He supplies all our needs.
you are called to youth ministry - then do youth ministry.
If you are called to collegiate ministry - then do collegiate ministry.
If you are called to the pastorate - then be a pastor.
We need to stop using different roles as stepping stones. Pursue your calling, not jobs!
£130 in Facebook ads across 90 days resulted in a reach of 20,000 and engagement of 11,000. Over 2000 watched a the full length of the sermon/devotional shared and the page gained 141 likes. Advice for churches - make room in your budget for online ads!

I’ve hit that point in my sermon prep for this Sunday! The point where the message is bursting at the seems and I’m excited to preach the good news. It’s welling up, it’s overflowing and in anticipation of what the Lord will do I am excited!
Incredibly proud to be married to Miriam - today she saw a stab victim on the ground and rushed into the middle of the scene, took charge and gave treatment until the ambulance arrived.

speaking tonight on “Why Gospel Centrality” with seven reasons why we center on the Gospel from 1 Corinthians 15:1-4
1. We are forgetful.
2. It is of first importance.
3. The Gospel most glorified God.
4. Most appropriate for brokenness.
5. Only means of subverting…
In restoring Peter, Jesus did not go first to the task (Feed/tend the sheep). Instead, He went to whether Peter loved Him or not.
Friends, love Jesus before you attempt to do any "task" for Him!
Part of my role at
@MBTS
is to help students search and apply for ministry roles - if you serve on a search committee:
What do you want to see on resumes?
What do you not want to see?
Leah has continued to struggle today. She has been coughing a lot and feeling very weak. Temperature remaining above 38c still. Keep praying. She is on day 3 like this.
Friends - needing your prayers! I’m wiped, totally exhausted and still have much to do before Sunday! Pray as I write and finish off a sermon, a set of talks and prepare for our Nativity filming.
Finished my second class on Expository Preaching today

Pastoral visitation is less about “come to me when in need” and more about “I’m coming to you, to know you and care for you” - once you go to them, they will trust you and come to you in the future.
Tested positive for Covid-19 today. Doing well and symptoms mild - much work to do in this season, so we continue to crack on with ministry (although at home)
If it were not for the church I serve, several asylum seekers would be on the streets - fearful & alone. There was no ‘game system’ but a genuine care for the soul and life of such individuals. I will never feel ashamed to have helped those in dreadful situations.
Tomorrow I will be preaching along with 5 other guys in our Pastoral Training Center preaching lab at Liberty Baptist Church.
Here is an excerpt from my notes:
"Today, if I cried out, quick, He’s coming and pointed to the Heavens as Jesus returns, what would you be found doing?…
Too many churches are pastor centred, building centred, numbers centred and even popularity centred! Being Gospel centred should destroy any desire to let these things rule!
Please pray for Gospel churches in Lincolnshire - we are in the beginning stages of setting up a Gospel partnership. Pray that I’m coming together, the Kingdom will be greatly impacted!
Second session of the Men’s Retreat at Wyatt Park Baptist and

Gospel Power in Discipleship (Philippians 1:3-11)
1. Prayer is a position of Gospel power.
2. Partnership is a participation of Gospel power.

A great sense of healing has been realised in my life recently - I no longer stress or fear over members meetings.
Most of the stress was self-inflicted, but not all. God has been gracious to lift those fears!
Praise Jesus for a church home to learn, grow, serve and heal in.

Genuine question (please don’t hate on it!) - I was brought up to see no differences in people. We are all Gods creation. My children, are brought up in the same way. We don’t see race, or skin colour, we just see a person. Is that too simple an argument for teaching children?
