Twin Cities Boulevard is practical, not radical.
“Reimagining I-94: A Report on Reparative Highway Alternatives & Evaluation Metrics” addresses how removing I-94 would work, what it might look like, and what the community benefits would be.
We are excited to announce the Twin Cities Boulevard, a community vision for
@MnDOT

Translation: Disabled people, low income people, people with strollers, and pedestrians are not a priority
Just saw someone in a wheelchair get stuck on a frozen over and snowy curb cut in downtown Minneapolis. Luckily people were close to help out, but what the hell are we doing? The streets btw are perfectly clear...
The budget amendment to fund municipal sidewalk plowing passed unanimously!
THANK YOU for advocating for walkable, rollable winters for everyone.

ANNOUNCEMENT 🧵: We’re partnering with the Harrison Neighborhood Association to Bring Back 6th!
North Minneapolis has dealt with the negative impacts of Olson Memorial Highway for long enough. It’s time to remove the highway and restore our communities:
Thank you for coming to
@OpenStreetsMPLS
Cedar Riverside. The event was an excellent example of community and the magic that happens when we have a third space to meet and connect with neighbors and can safely bike, walk, and roll.
Sections of two Minneapolis parkways – Lake Harriet Parkway btwn W Minnehaha Parkway and W 43rd Street and the northbound lane of West River Parkway between 4th Avenue N and 11th Avenue S – will open for walkers, bikers and rollers and close to car traffic from April 12 to May 31
On days like today, ice & snow make our sidewalks difficult to navigate. Meanwhile, the City plows hundreds of roads for cars. Today we’re announcing a campaign asking
@CityMinneapolis
to fix this broken system & invest in a city-led snow clearing program
SUCCESS! City Council just voted to approve the layout for the Hennepin reconstruction, including restored 24/7 bus lanes on day one. The future of this project now lies with
@MayorFrey
. Send an email to the Mayor calling on him to approve the design:
Thanks to your advocacy, there will be a

Legislative Hearing at the upcoming House Transportation Committee hearing at the Minnesota State Capitol.
This is a critical opportunity to testify in front of legislators and
@mndot
in favor of Twin Cities Boulevard.
“THE

We have incredibly exciting news!
#BringBack6th
has received $1.6M in federal grant money through the Reconnecting Communities Program 🎉
Thank you for your advocacy and support!
Days before breaking ground,
@MayorFrey
and
@MAKMinnesota
dropped a watered-down plan for the Bryant Ave S. reconstruction, undercutting years of community engagement and a previously approved plan that aligns with
@CityMinneapolis
transportation goals.
The 7.5-mile section of I-94 between downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul is due for reconstruction.

We are glad to find out the Minneapolis City Council passed funding for the 2024 Open Streets program.
Unfortunately, because the council relied on misinformation from the Public Works Department, the funding amount falls well short of the actual cost for hosting the events.
City Council just passed the budget amendment by myself and
@jeremiah4north
to restore funding for
@OpenStreetsMPLS
! Thank you to everyone who took action to make it clear that this cherished community tradition must continue.
I'll see you at an Open Streets next summer. 💃🏿
In honor of the Minnesota Timberwolves making it into the Western Conference Finals for the first time in 20 years, we’re celebrating by painting First Avenue downtown and temporarily changing street signs to honor the Wolves.

Advocacy success! On Friday, May 6,
@MnDOT
Interim Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger sent an email that includes a commitment to including a highway-to-boulevard conversion in the
#Rethinking94
project options.
KEEP THE KMART SITE CAR-FREE
Despite the car-free option receiving the most public support in the
@CityMinneapolis
online survey, Public Works is recommending an auto-centric design that would run car traffic through the Kmart site.
Take action:
Mpls Pedestrian Advisory Cmte adopts resolution that “every effort should be taken to convert streets that have 4 or more lanes for cars... to 2 or 3 lanes” when streets are reconstructed or resurfaced because they are “demonstrably safer” for everyone
That dang Kmart will soon be demolished, and the City of Minneapolis now has an opportunity to reconnect Nicollet Avenue to keep the new street closed to cars and prioritizes comfortable walking, biking, rolling, transit and greenspace.
Project survey:
If you'd like to see
@OpenStreetsMPLS
continue, the best thing you can do is let your Council Member know. Our funding proposal included 5 events, with interest for increased funding to do up to 10.
When we had our third child we bought a Komatsu 930E. It's very safe and bigger than both a tank and a F750. My children are very safe. Pedestrians can be wiped off the wheels fairly easily.
We are disappointed to learn that the Ward 10 & Ward 12 office, along with other transportation advocates, have accepted a compromise resolution with Mayor Frey that leaves the Hennepin Ave S design without full-time bus lanes and no assurance that they will ever be implemented.
We also call on
@MplsWard11
Council Member
@emilykoskimpls
to support the override after disappointingly requesting the vote on the Hennepin Ave. S. redesign be itemized, allowing
@Jacob_Frey
to veto the amended layout at the expense of businesses and transit dependent community
As if it wasn’t enough that the
@CityMinneapolis
gave the community ONE subpar car free option,
@MayorFrey
’s ‘Freudian slip’ is an early indicator the administration is favoring…
After
@MayorFrey
’s veto, our commitment to ensuring equitable access to multimodal transportation options remains. We stand in solidarity with working class, BIPOC, and disabled people, students, small businesses and all others who are transit dependent or choose to use transit.
Great news! The City released the proposed design for the Hennepin reconstruction, including:
✔️Improved pedestrian facilities
✔️Protected bike lanes
✔️Dedicated transit lanes
These elements are a direct result of organizing by
@hennepin4people
,
@MoveMinnesota
, & other groups.
‼️ Action Alert ‼️
Now is a critical time to share your support for the Twin Cities Boulevard with decisionmakers. Take a moment to send an email to your representatives.
Every foot counts in urban areas. Reducing a car lane from 12 ft to 10 ft can effectively control vehicle speeds and improve the walkability of the area - all without reducing the capacity of the road.
What Minneapolis streets would you want to see this improvement on?
Many PAC members signed an open letter to
@mndot
Commissioner Daubenberger regarding concerns about the Rethinking I-94 project.
The letter, sent yesterday, asks MnDOT to address concerns around the flawed traffic modeling and more.
"Removing freeways isn’t a radical idea — what’s 'truly radical' was building these freeways through communities in the first place." It's time for Minnesota to join cities across the country and remove our own urban highways.
We are hosting a public forum for community members and elected officials to learn about
#RethinkingI94
and share their thoughts on the future with I-94 decision-makers.
This event is for anyone interested in the project, especially for those who live along the highway.
During her confirmation hearing, Director
@MAKminnesota
said 24/7 bus lanes on Hennepin may not be needed immediately due to low ridership. In reality, data throughout the pandemic has shown how vital transit is for working class people and those who can't afford cars.
It's important to note that while
@OpenStreetsMPLS
did not receive funding, funding for "Warehouse District Live" was awarded in 2023 and an additional $600,000 is in
@mayorfrey
's 2024 budget draft.
Our City’s snow crews have been working hard this weekend to keep streets, alleyways, and bike lanes clear. We have close to 60 pieces of equipment out tonight — helping to keep all who use Minneapolis roads & bikeways safe. If you see our crews out, please give them a thank you!
Our team has pushed for a 4-3 conversion on Lyndale Ave S since 2020. We're happy to share that the pilot conversion will be implemented this Summer! Be sure to to attend the forum hosted by Hennepin County to learn more about the project. Register at:
In place of Olson Memorial Highway used to be 6th Ave North, a vibrant and predominately Black-owned business corridor. Policies rooted in racism led to this community being torn down for the highway… (Photos from the Hennepin County Library)
We would be thrilled to partner with other departments to run the program in 2024.

Twin Cities Boulevard is not an anomaly.
People all over the country are fighting highway expansion and know a better future is possible.
Awesome work,

The
@CityMinneapolis
City Council Climate and Infrastructure Committee passed the project option that will allow cars along Nicollet through the old Kmart site (concept 1) despite the majority of survey respondents favoring the car-free option (concept 4).
Let us be clear. This decision to remove full-time bus lanes from the original layout was made by Mayor Frey, Director Anderson Kelliher, & the 5 Council Members who voted twice to block 24/7 bus lanes from being implemented. They should be held accountable for this decision.
You've likely heard that
@CityMinneapolis
plans to end our partnership for this event series, a hallmark of summer for many Minneapolis residents since 2011. We found this out when you did, and are just as surprised.
Last year we pulled data about MPD traffic stops.
We found that despite Black and African American people making up about 18% of our population in Minneapolis, Black & East African people made up 45% of stops & were searched 70% of the time.
UPDATE & ACTION ALERT. We've learned that the City of Minneapolis does NOT intend to apply for a Reconnecting Communities grant to study the Twin Cities Boulevard. Learn more & take action here:🧵
Jeanne Tweet, a Minneapolis resident, environmentalist, and year-round cyclist for over 40 years, was struck by a car while riding her bike on April 5th. The driver did not stop. Jeanne is in the ICU and has a long road to recovery.
Open Streets MPLS is a cherished community tradition where neighbors meet neighbors, learn about their community, and experience a car-free environment. It is a hallmark of warmer weather that doesn’t require you to spend a penny to enjoy.
Take Action:
If there is enough public pressure, the Minneapolis City Council can include funding for Open Streets Minneapolis in their budget amendment in November.
Take action:
As snow falls later this week, much of
#MPLS
will become inaccessible due to unclear sidewalks. Snow and ice restrict mobility for people with walkers, wheelchairs, strollers, etc. If just one property neglects to clear its sidewalk, an entire block can become inaccessible.
Not requiring activated buttons was an easy and effective way to immediately make the streets better for folks walking and rolling.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. We will follow up with
@CityMinneapolis
.
The lights on Riverside have reverted to beg-button-activated, even though the city hasn't taken down the signs that say otherwise. Cc

The data is clear, full-time bus lanes are needed DAY 1 on Hennepin Ave S.
@MayorFrey
and
@MAKMinnesota
knew this, yet they hid this information from the public while justifying their decision to remove 24/7 bus lanes from the plan. This is unacceptable.
A slide from March 3 shows the city has analyzed the risk to transit performance that results from converting the bus lane to parking. Moderate to high risk most of the day. You can guess why it wasn't presented to the City Council's Public Works & Infrastructure Committee.
It's past time for a 4-3 lane conversion on Lyndale Ave S.
We're renewing our call for
@Hennepin
County to make this quick, efficient change to Lyndale Ave S immediately.
We urge you to join us.

The Federal Reserve parking garage was denied.
Thanks to everyone who raised your voice in opposition, esp. those who took the lead on organizing, including our friends at

We’re thrilled to see our local community stand up for places for people.
We are thrilled that the legislative directive on municipal snow and ice removal passed unanimously through the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee yesterday.

24/7 bus lanes have been removed from the Hennepin Ave S design. With the layout coming to a vote this Thursday, we’re calling on project decision makers to STOP THE DELAY and restore the original design including 24/7 bus lanes. Take action:
Minneapolis residents deserve to be at the center of our democracy.
