I’m honored to be re-elected to represent Ward 2. Two years ago, I became the first ever Black Democratic Socialist elected to Minneapolis City Council and I cannot wait to continue the work we’ve started as a voice for working class people in Ward 2 and across Minneapolis.
Take a deep breath Minneapolis.
But remember no single verdict from an unjust system can deliver justice.
Whatever happens, take care of yourself, because the long march to liberation continues.
We demand space to grieve. They show up in riot gear.
We demand answers. They gas us.
The only response they know is violence.
If we want to build something better, we can not build it with an institution that knows nothing other than violence.
Mayor Frey gives away the game here. Our mayor and his corporate backers are not worried about Uber and Lyft leaving, but what it might mean for Minneapolis to be a city where the rights of all working class people are protected, and what that would mean for the ruling class.
Minneapolis’s mayor on the supposedly dangerous precedent set by the ride share ordinance: “Are we now planning to set a minimum wage for every industry?”
Like hundreds of Lyft users, I received an email today that they’re leaving Mpls on May 1st.
What they fail to mention is that they’re choosing to “leave” because they simply do not want to pay their drivers, a largely Black & immigrant workforce, our minimum wage of $15/hr.
A conviction of Chauvin is not justice.
It is not proof that the system works.
If the system worked, George Floyd would be alive.
And what has been done to change that system since his murder?
0
And they’ve brought in the National Guard to make sure it stays that way.
They don’t live in armored trucks. They can go Home.
You know who can’t go home? The protestors you’re detaining.
You know who else can’t go home? Daunte Wright and George Floyd.
Because they were killed by MN police officers.
Let’s be clear: The brave men and women of the Minnesota National Guard are our neighbors.
They’re teachers, health care workers, and business owners who live in communities across our state.
This is unacceptable. They can’t “go home” — this is their home.
The footage of MPD officer Mark Hanneman shooting and killing Amir Locke has been released by the city.
You do not have to watch the footage to know that there is still no justice for Black people in the city of Minneapolis.
Deeply disappointed in my colleagues on council today. The choice to move forward with today’s rent control vote while three of our members, including the two bill authors, were out honoring Eid is a disservice to them and the people of Mpls, particularly our Muslim residents.
If the city wanted to reopen GFS so badly, they should have been working overtime to meet the 24 Demands.
If they wanted to meet the needs of the community, they would have met the 24 Demands.
But this ain’t about the community. It’s about power. And silencing dissent.
After George Floyd’s murder, there were calls to defund the police and calls for reform.
Two years later, we've had no meaningful reforms and *more* money for police.
Thanks to Mayor Frey, the police that killed George Floyd are more powerful and less accountable than ever.
Two years after George Floyd's murder, the Minneapolis Police Department now has more money to spend than it did before his death set off a global movement re-examining policing.
Today, Minneapolis City Council voted 9-3 to advance a ceasefire resolution that calls for an end to the genocide happening in Palestine. We take a final vote on Thursday.
The opponents of Question 2 wanted us to believe that the Chauvin verdict was Justice for George Floyd, so that they wouldn’t have to build a system that could deliver justice and safety for Amir Locke and every other Black person in this city.
George Floyd was murdered on May 25th and Chauvin was arrested and charged by May 29th.
Amir Locke was killed while wrapped in a blanket on February 2nd, and still no arrest and charges have been made.
It shouldn't take an uprising to get some judicial justice.
Take care of yourselves tonight.
Whether you are on the ground in Brooklyn Center or at home. Take care of yourself. Take care of your community.
The road to abolition and liberation is long. And we only get there together.
There is an incredibly well-funded disinformation campaign around public safety currently being run here in Minneapolis.
Here is a helpful 🧵 THREAD 🧵 of Public Safety Myths vs FACTS from my campaign.
Read and share to make sure your community knows what’s really happening.
Roughly 7000 apartments in Minneapolis sit empty because landlords refuse to lower their rents to prices our communities can afford.
Thank you
@noemptyhomes_mn
for hosting a vacancy tour! Landlords letting homes intentionally sit empty during a housing crisis is unacceptable.
The system sacrificed Derek Chauvin so that it could continue on the same as ever.
That’s why Kim Potter got a slap on the wrist
Mark Hanneman is still on MPD
No-knocks were never banned
Excited delirium was still taught
Officers who hunted protestors are still on MPD
Judge Chu got emotional as she talked about officers risking their lives every single day in public service: "Officer Potter made a mistake that ended tragically. She never intended to hurt anyone," judge wipes away a tear.

@LawCrimeNetwork
This is what Minneapolis looks like right now. Smoky skies as a result of the wildfires taking place in Canada. Worst air quality recorded in the state’s history.
We are literally witnessing climate catastrophes happen daily.
The Mayor failed to make changes after the murder of George Floyd and MPD continues to have unchecked power to judge and execute Black people.
Mayor Frey asked voters for more power, and he got it. He needs to use his power to create a Department of Public Safety, or resign.
A month ago, the city released footage of an MPD SWAT team bursting into an apartment in downtown Mpls on a no-knock warrant.
In less than 10 seconds, officer Mark Hanneman shot and killed 22-year-old Amir Locke while he was still wrapped in a blanket.
Mark Hanneman, the officer who shot and killed Amir Locke is currently on PAID leave.
We’ve seen the video.
No arrest.
No suspension.
PAID leave.
This is Frey’s MPD.
I had the privilege of being elected in November. I was inaugurated on Janary 10th, but what I never shared throughout that journey is that on Christmas morning, I found out I was pregnant.
I lost the baby at the end of January, three weeks into my role as a City Councilmember.
"Riders deserve affordable services. Uber & Lyft can provide that. They're choosing not to.
They're also able to provide a $15 minimum wage to drivers. It's a choice that they don't want to do that."
Don't let billion dollar corporations pit our communities against one another.
As a socialist, I have to be clear. Public safety is not just about policing. It's about the public good- that's infrastructure, schools, housing, clean air, clean water, and the other things we all need to live a safe and healthy life.
Yesterday Mayor Frey said “too often, elected leaders are dehumanized. We forget that under a particular policy or vote, there’s a person with a family and good intentions.” Hours later, he dehumanized residents by doubling down on his inhumane practices towards unhoused people.
Why?
After all our communities have been through in the past year...why?
Why go to this man for comments today?
The man who brought the military into grieving communities multiple times.
This is not the man anyone should be listening to today.
As we watch watch our democracy be attacked on numerous fronts at that national level, I want raise how City leaders are advancing undemocratic initiatives here in Minneapolis, with the goal of consolidating power amongst unelected political appointees. A 🧵
It’s time to build a Department of Public Safety. It’s clear the process of building the department we need cannot happen under Mayor Frey.
It’s time for him to resign and let the real work begin.
Our collective liberation will not wait.
@TeenVogue
Solidarity with UMN students organizing in support of a free Palestine!
Calling in police to arrest nonviolent demonstrations of students on campus is escalatory and reckless. This is a failure of leadership by the UMN administration.

workers. They are facing massive backlash and retaliation from management. Their workers deserve a free & fair election. Period!
“If policing made us safer and if policing prevented murder, we would be the safest country in the world.
No society in modern recorded world history has ever spent so much money on policing.”

@CitationsPod
Policing doesn’t equal public safety.
Today City Council voted 9-4 to pass a $15 minimum wage for rideshare drivers.
I'm honored to have stood with
@TheMulda
as they've tirelessly worked to win $15/hr over the last 18 months and finally close a loophole that Uber and Lyft have used to exploit drivers in Mpls.
Minneapolis’ first independent Black socialist wins again! Congrats to
@robin4mpls
and
@TwinCitiesDSA
! Ward 2 is proudly sending her back for another term!
There’s a lot going through my mind after today’s council, but I need to make one thing clear:
City Council could have put a stop to violent encampment evictions and chose not to.
I’m running it back!
Robin for Mpls 2023.
I ran for city council to be a champion for working class people. And it is so exciting to know I have a whole movement at my back every day when I step into city hall.
But we are just getting started y’all.
I am so thrilled to have been elected as Minneapolis’s first Black Democratic Socialist City Councilmember and to represent the beautiful, diverse working class communities of Ward 2 and the whole city of Minneapolis.
MPD does not bring public safety.
They have never brought public safety.
And they cannot be trusted to bring us public safety moving forward.
It's time for a new path.
Myth: Mpls is one of the most progressive cities in the country.
Reality: Mpls, famous worldwide for its police force murdering Black people, has a mayor who refuses to hold police accountable, refuses to listen to Black staff and cuts successful Black-led programs.
With the filing period closed, I'm running unopposed in 2023—thank you Ward 2! I'm honored to serve a 2nd term representing our community.
As a socialist in elected office, you'll still see me and my team on the doors, because I'm committed to building with everyone in Ward 2.
Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo won't seek another term. He announces plans to retire next month, after 32 years with the MPD. "The light of our city's spirit will shine brighter in the days to come."
I've been clear from the beginning that Israel's apartheid state is not a pathway to a just and lasting peace. Permanent ceasefire now.
I will be bringing forward a resolution for Minneapolis to join dozens of cities across the country in calling for a ceasefire on January 8.
Today’s DOJ report would not be necessary in a city that listened to its residents. There’s nothing in here that is a surprise to Black and Indigenous people in Minneapolis, because it has been a daily reality for decades.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland is in Minneapolis announcing the results of the DOJ investigation into the MPD. He starts his comments by talking about the events of three years ago, saying "George Floyd should be alive today." (1)
Every single MPLS resident should be furious right now.
Doesn’t matter if you support
#yes4minneapolis
or not.
It’s a signal to everyone that if you collect over 20k signatures and jump through every hoop, they will still find a judge to kill your work and silence community.
I’ll be holding a press conference today at 2 at the City Hall rotunda to speak on the action our city needs to take following MPD’s killing of Amir Locke.
Masks required.
It’s not surprising the mayor whose failed policies led us to this housing crisis is tossing aside the advice of experts in order to put the profits of his funders, the downtown council and corporate developers over the needs of working class people.
Proud of our City Council today for taking a courageous stand to reaffirm our support for a ceasefire and call for an end to military aid to Israel to prevent further genocide in Gaza.
To everyone who organized to make this happen: we couldn't have done this with without y'all.
Thanks to the
@StarTribune
archives, we can see residents calling for municipal snow removal since 1940!
My first attempt at a pilot program aimed at seniors, children and people with disabilities didn’t go through.
But I’m gonna keep working to make Chas’s dream a reality.
Despite all his talk of accountability, the mayor has not held anyone accountable for Locke’s killing.
Hanneman is still on the force, collecting a check. The other SWAT officers have faced no discipline.
We don’t know why MPD asked for a no-knock warrant or why it was given.
There is no reason why a billion dollar company shouldn’t be able to pay their drivers fair wages and keep rides affordable. Thousands of Minneapolis businesses have done so for years now and continue to thrive.
If the mayor wants to cross-examine me, I'm happy to have a public discussion any time he wants.
I'll answer any and all of his questions.
But let me be clear: I only answer *to* the people.
This is exactly right. The mayor of Minneapolis has been doing this for years.
Some of us on city council have stood with encampment residents, tried to stop the evictions through council and get clarity on city policy.
But the mayor has evaded us at every turn and continued
The homelessness strategy in every major city, sans some token efforts to build housing, is to harass, arrest and terrorize homeless people until they do one of three things
(1) leave to another city
(2) end up in prison for parole or drug violations
(3) die freezing outside
In spite of Lyft’s corporate tantrum, I am deeply proud that Council took a near unanimous vote to put an end to Uber and Lyft’s predatory practice of paying their drivers poverty wages.
The youth took over University of Minnesota’s campus today in solidarity of Daunte Wright and George Floyd, and to fight for community control over the University police.
#blacklivesmatter
And to be even clearer: I'm not the one with a credibility problem with the people of Minneapolis.
I was elected as an independent Socialist. I call myself what I am and I do what I say I’m going to do: fight for working class people.
I do not get casual with my language.
If you’ve walked the streets in the last few days, you know the potential dangers snow and ice present every winter.
It’s high time we fund a pilot program to keep our streets safe for all, not just drivers.
Some Minneapolis City Council members have been talking about a "municipal shoveling program," offering relief to property owners by putting the city in charge of snow and ice removal on sidewalks.
#Sunrisers
Who decides which protests are “peaceful”?
Which communities are allowed to protest “peacefully”?
Who is listened to when they “peacefully” protest?
Because when the cops murder Black people, this is the response our protests get.
Over and over. And nothing changes.
Chaotic scene tonight outside the Brooklyn Center Police Department where it seems the police and military greatly out number protesters. They are shooting from tanks.
Chicago: No minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers yet passengers saw a 54% increase in prices in the last 4 years—x3 faster than inflation.
NYC: Uber and Lyft drivers earn a minimum like we passed here in Minneapolis. Passengers saw a 36% increase in prices in the last 4 years.
City Council just passed the budget amendment by myself and
@jeremiah4north
to restore funding for
@OpenStreetsMPLS
! Thank you to everyone who took action to make it clear that this cherished community tradition must continue.
I'll see you at an Open Streets next summer. 💃🏿
August:
@MayorFrey
proposed his 2024 City of Minneapolis budget. That budget did not include funding for Open Streets Minneapolis or municipal sidewalk plowing.
@RacketMN
@jaymboller

Hate has no place on the University of Minnesota campus! Students are organizing to demand the U uninvite Justice Barrett.
Join me in signing their petition ->
Unfortunately, Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett has been invited to the UMN campus on October 16th. YDSA @ UMN has created a petition to show the University that we will not stand for this. Sign petition: and interest form:
My office today released a fact sheet outlining what sidewalk plowing could look in Minneapolis, why we need it, and what it will take to implement it.
We should begin with the 300 miles of sidewalks most heavily used by pedestrians and transit users.
Tuition at public universities in MN has increased by 293% in the last two decades. Minnesotans have $27 billion in student debt.
With a historic state budget surplus, we need a reinvestment in public higher education in MN to make tuition free for all students.
Today, the city dispatched hundreds of police to destroy three encampments, leaving hundreds of our unhoused neighbors with nowhere to go.
The Frey administration refuses to work with Council to advance any policy on encampments. No heads up are given to us regarding clearances.
This investigation hits close to home.
These are the same people who fought my election all the way through the recount process.
And they've had the ability to make decisions on behalf of working people within City Hall through their ties to Frey and his administration.
Mayor Frey just vetoed the action my colleagues and I took yesterday to halt the demolition of the Roof Depot building and pause the Hiawatha Expansion.
We have received 100 of messages of support for the pause from constituents, including the Twin Cities Medical Society.
Just as the world turned to Mpls after George Floyd’s murder by MPD, the world has turned to Gaza. In 2020, solidarity from across the globe helped give us strength to keep fighting. We have the opportunity and responsibility to return that solidarity to the people of Palestine.
The three of us socialists have been unapologetic about standing with working class people.
Fighting the conservative establishment in city hall was never going to be easy and we got lots of work left to do, but we are showing up and showing there’s another way.
Of his 5 vetoes this term, do you wanna guess who the lead author was? Either me,
@JChavezMpls
, or
@robin4mpls
He can justify it however he wants, but it’s the 3 youngest members of color who also happen to be socialists and represent the Southside that catch veto letters 🤷🏽♀️
In the last month, we have only seen more MPD failures uncovered, while the mayor has kept a low profile hoping this will all go away.
But that’s not how the fight for liberation works. We will keep fighting, long past the time he’s finally gone, until we’re all free.
While I’m not a member of the DFL, I extend solidarity and love to
@AishaforWard10
and everyone who was impacted by today’s disturbing convention. Violence, intimidation, and disruptive stall tactics are used by those who know they can’t win on the issues.
Twin Cities DSA endorsed Aisha Chughtai because she cares about her community. When Nasri Warsame decided to violently disrupt the Ward 10 convention, Aisha and her team prioritized keeping everyone safe. That’s what Minneapolis needs in its leadership.
What a day!
By upholding Fair Drives, Safe Rides with a 10-3 vote, City Council sent a message to Uber, Lyft and all corporations that we will defend Mpls workers and our minimum wage.
So proud to have worked with drivers at every step to make today’s victory a reality.
Frey’s own administration helped craft Fair Drives Safe Rides after 8 months of research.
Today he vetoed that policy & announced he cut a backroom deal with Uber and Lyft.
It’s not a law.
It’s a pinky promise w/ the same corporations who’ve exploited drivers for years.
In 2021 Frey opposed Question 2, claiming we didn't have a plan for public safety in Minneapolis.
Cedric Alexander with his $300k salary and the Office of Community Safety have been up and running for a year.
One year in, there's no plan to make a plan to keep residents safe.
Ice rinks already closed in our parks. No snow for the Powderhorn art sleds. The warmest December in 150 years.
Climate change is starkly visible this winter and it's frightening. Our city must meet the urgency of climate change while preparing for the impacts it will bring.
Today's acquittal of Kyle Rittenhouse is both unsurprising and terrifying to anyone who has been involved in the fight for justice. We are watching in real time the reawakening of a dangerous fascist movement in our country.
75 Uber and Lyft drivers are rallying outside Mayor Frey’s office demanding that he addresses the gross working conditions that these companies subject their workers to. The Mayor refuses to meet with them. My colleagues and I are excited to support these workers. Stay tuned!
Our unhoused neighbors need supportive housing and social services. Instead, Frey's administration is filling vacant lots with concrete rubble.
Deploying 150 MPD officers three times in two weeks to evict encampments and dump trucks of rubble solves nothing at staggering costs.
Today Frey’s administration announced they oppose any rent control policy.
In November 2021, 75,000 Minneapolis residents voted for rent control.
The City Council unanimously appointed a work group of landlords and renters that recommended a 3% annual cap on rent increases.
NEW: A year and a half after Minneapolis voters asked city leaders to begin work on rent control, a staff impact analysis is recommending against implementing a 3% annual rent cap recommended by a working group of landlords and tenants.
Yesterday the City Council again voted down spending $15 million on retention incentives for MPD.
Frey's administration failed to demonstrate how these bonuses would help retain and recruit officers nor why this was the best use of money to actually keep residents safe.
Whether in a US Senate judicial confirmation hearing or MPLS City Council, Black women are held to a different standard in the halls of power.
There’s always someone to cut you off or accuse you of starting a fight when you’re only fighting for justice and your community.
Mayor Frey said Council Member Robin Wonsley Worlobah (who read portions of quotes from the mayor about the contract) is obviously trying to get into a public fight with him. He said he's not taking the bait. (25)
Parents across Minneapolis are struggling to figure out how to get their kids to public school, because there’s a bus shortage.
Why?
Because we’ve been defunding education for decades now.
It’s time we start funding the things that make all our communities stronger and safer.
It’s simple: why waste time talking to suburbanites on
@StribOpinion
’s Board who want unhoused residents treated with cruelty, lose it when we say MPD does racist things, & want poor people displaced from our city? I’ll focus on talking to my neighbors & winning the election 🤷🏽♀️
Minneapolis can be a city that provides safe and affordable services for riders while ensuring drivers earn $15/hour. Lyft and Uber have exploited a loophole in our minimum wage that never should have existed.
Many people in our city saw the Chauvin conviction as a sign that the system was changing. That accountability was possible.
But the conviction gave the system a license to continue the same as ever.
Remember, the whole damn system is guilty.
New from me and
@StribJany
: Cops on the scene of Minneapolis police killing of Terrance Franklin in 2013 are in talks with prosecutors over immunity for new information on what happened that day
I look forward to working with inquiring rideshare companies who understand that that providing affordable rides to Minneapolis residents doesn’t have to conflict with paying drivers what they deserve.
5 years ago today, Philando Castile was murdered by a police officer, who was later acquitted of all charges.
5 years later, we’re fighting the same battles against the same unjust system.
But 5 years later, we have a chance ahead of us to do something different.
Today, city council voted to move forward with the demolition of the Rooftop Depot Building. A building that sits on top of a toxic arsenic plume in a neighborhood that is already the most polluted in the city thanks to decades of environmental racism.
