1. LAWSUIT UPDATE: On Mar 14th 2022, J. Pardu ruled “Considering … the little merit to the appeal, the prejudice to [Moore & @berniefarber ], coupled with the evident malice with which [Elisa Hategan] acted…the motion is dismissed.”

🧵I spoke with a colleague in Ottawa recently and she was shocked Toronto didn’t have convoy camps. I wish I could show her this time-stamped case study to illustrate how and why we’ve been spared so far: /1

I’m struggling with how to end this. The white male privilege at play is exhausting, and I recognize the methods TPS successfully used could be amplified to violence against others. At the same time, I’m relieved my city has been spared the horns, hot tubs, and harassment. /8

And as this circus (hopefully) winds down, we need to stay in that discomfort and use it to ask tough questions of our politicians & police. The time to push for greater community safety and inclusion is now. My city may have been spared, but the work is just beginning. /end

There is nothing easy about the convoy, even in cities without their BBQs and bouncy castles. I’m glad about this. Our collective complacency allowed this movement to grow & flourish. Whatever we’re grappling with, we need to sit in that discomfort. /9

Throughout the convoy, I’ve seen many supporters opining (whining) that Toronto is a lost cause. Between counter demos and the cops keeping the welcome mat locked up, it wasn’t worth it. With all eyes on Ottawa Matt & Trevor thought they’d be able to slip in. They were wrong. /7

With so much evidence even at the tail end of things, no one can say they didn't know. Anything less than direct condemnation is complicity. As the saying goes, "if there's a Nazi at the table and 10 people are sitting there talking to them, you've got a table with 11 Nazis." /15

I had a late start so I attended the end of The Line’s small gathering at Yonge Dundas Square and waited for the Queen’s Park marchers to arrive. “Nurse Ashley,” who was the final speaker, told us the vaccine causes HIV. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. /2

Despite the honks and waves, there was plenty of opposition as well. One marcher said “a finger isn’t a conversation,” but really it says all that needs to be said. /end

Not all conspiracies getting aired out yesterday were old ones. Russia/QAnon propaganda about bio labs in the Ukraine made it into the Toronto demo. @Justin_Ling has an incredible thread explaining where this started and how it spread: /6a

Yesterday I wrote on a fast-moving conspiracy theory that seeks to rationalize Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and marry it with a tangle of QAnon paranoia. Let's look at how this theory came to be — and how it's still being promoted by Moscow.

Whatever happens this weekend is time limited. The shift in the mindset of supporters won't be. What do we do that so many are willing to support fascists b/c they're tired of protecting themselves & their communities against covid? Is selfishness our new guiding principle? /7

1. 🧵on men in tradwife spaces: The pretty pictures of freshly baked bread and well-behaved children that tradwives crank out promote the ideal performance of a gentle patriarchy that serves God. But this performance isn’t always accepted by men.

Also, I did it because I’m there to observe, not make myself the story. I want to film what they do for their cause, not what they do in response to me. Getting footage of personal confrontations is of little value and could make things less safe for anyone else observing. /23

Fortunately, the conspiracy crowd was having none of it. They advised the assistant wasn’t welcome and asked why Global didn’t report on their assorted perceived triumphs and fears. Below is just a sample of the responses. /2

6. Having said that, though, my response to well-meaning friends and loved ones who told me to be smarter or perhaps even take a break, surprised me. Planning and being safe makes sense, however…

I lied for two reasons, the most important being my safety. I was there alone and this interaction happened when everyone was standing outside CityTV. He could’ve yelled and had the crowd hear in a tight space and that could’ve been dicy. I wasn’t going to take the chance. /21

A few brave residents spoke out, including this person with a “Darwin Awards 2022” sign. At least 2 men went up to them, including 1 with a camera rolling, in an effort to intimidate. /12
