Today, I covered the protests. Tonight, I was arrested for walking to my car past curfew. (Despite having a press exemption and wearing my press pass prominently.) I am ok. More soon.

teacher Joyce Abbott doesn't work for recognition. But she got recognized in a big way when her former student
@quintabrunson
created a TV show inspired by her. AKA, that's why it's called

I am trying to write a story at my desk. This dog just brought me her leash and is now sitting with it, looking disapproving and periodically whining. If any

This is my dad, Bill Graham. He’s 76, a lifelong fan who taught me about the beauty of baseball. He’s newly recovered from pneumonia and he is thrilled to be here. His rally helmet is at the ready.
OK this is a sign.
@PhillyInquirer
reader Karen Townsend sent this photo of the clouds in the shape of a Phanatic, and I was skeptical, but COME ON IT’S THE PHANATIC! Go Phils.
20(!) years ago today, I became a FT reporter at the
@PhillyInquirer
. (As a
#PHLed
student, I always said this was my dream job.) Here’s a vintage press photo, a deep appreciation for everyone who’s trusted me tell to their stories, endured my questions, and read my work. Onward!
Central is second-largest school in Philly with over 2k kids. Students still streaming out of the school’s front door. School principal Tim McKenna had no idea how many would show up. “This is all student driven.”
#NationalSchoolWalkout
I have never seen this many
#phled
kids at a protest, and I've been covering the district for almost a decade. Wall to wall at City Hall.
#NationalSchoolWalkout
Nerves, still, before the

first day of school. Much respect to you all who will greet our amazing kids despite all the unknowns. Tell me how your first day goes!
Personal note-covering a protest down the street from your parents’ house is v different from other coverage. A) Dad offers to drive you. B) Mom questions you sharply about whether you have enough snacks, water, sunscreen. C) Dad tells you to call him first if you get arrested.
Hey, BFF
@ShaneVictorino
, remember me? You called me after I won the Pulitzer in 2012 & we met at a game later that year. Now I’m teaching my 5-year-old about the your heart & drive. Thanks for being a beloved hero.
My 7-year-old was crushed when I broke the news of the Phillies loss to him this morning. "But why, Mom? We were the better team, we were at home." If you're the parent of a sad Phillies fan kid who had to do some explaining last night or this morning, I'd love to hear from you!
I'm no TV critic, but I was interested in Abbott Elementary, the new show about a fictional Philly public school created by Philly's
@quintabrunson
. So I asked a Philly teacher to watch with me. We may or may not have snort-laughed multiple times.
Here’s a new poll worker at Fox Chase ES in the NE. He’s a recent cancer survivor, with bad arthritis that makes his back ache. Why did he volunteer? “This is my civic duty. It’s never been more important.” First vote, 1968, never missed an election. Say hi to Bill Graham: my dad
Got out of my car to cover a

graduation and heard the distinct sounds of a drumline, then saw the amazing

Class of 2022 walking up the street to their hard-earned moment. Chills!!
Become a journalist, they said. It will be super glamorous! My kids wanted to know where I was, so hi from my mobile newsroom, base of operations for a day of school reopening protest coverage. Onward!
We already had tickets, so once I got drafted for fan coverage, it became “take your kid to work” day. Me and my junior reporter will be looking for amazing tales!
First time back in a bustling
@PhillyInquirer
newsroom since 2020. Told my family it felt a little like the first day of school. My 6-year-old insisted on making a sign for me and taking a picture.
Here’s 13 seconds of unbridled

happiness - Penn Alexander kids celebrating their school’s National Blue Ribbon win while the Rocky theme plays and after confetti cannons shoot streamers everywhere. It’s the 1st time the school has been together since COVID hit.
Just had a conference with my 4-year-old's (amazing) teacher. Apparently he likes to tell his classmates about the time Mom got arrested doing her job. "They put her in handcuffs," he says! Can only imagine what the other kids' parents think I do!
Well. If the ? is “what will Kristen do in the name of journalism,” the answer is, “a lot.” Wore an Astros jersey because my editor asked me to, for a story. Ppl have been mostly fine. A few boos. My cousin Eileen, pictured here, was aghast. “What the hell are you wearing?”
"Can you let us know why the kids at Masterman and Central have a way different education than the kids at Strawberry Mansion?"

So it looks like I'm going to Houston to write Phillies fan stories (!!!!). Are you headed there to cheer on the road, or know someone who is? Get in touch!
When your 9-year-old begs to read the

before going to school and your mom/journalist heart grows three sizes. (He’s gobbling up your Trea Turner coverage,

On my morning workout, whenever I see a
@PhillyInquirer
on a lawn or sidewalk, I have to fight the urge to walk the paper up to the subscriber’s door. Nothing to see here, just your friendly neighborhood reporter who still loves the printed page!
On Int’l Overdose Awareness Day, I am thinking of Claire Gregory, my beloved cousin, whom we lost to addiction in 2020. She was kind, smart, & stylish with great taste in music. If you ever see me wear red lipstick, it’s in her honor, a reminder to be brave and bold. Like Claire.
Every person I've talked to today has asked me how I'm still awake. The answer is clear: IT'S PHILLIES OPENING DAY and yes I'm shouting. By my count, that's 299 days with no regular-season baseball and I am so stinking excited.
Tia Harvey: most determined voter? Lives in Chester, tried to vote there before work. Was told she wasn’t registered there, but in Port Richmond, where she’s never lived. She sat in traffic after work to wait in line to vote, worried she wouldn’t be able to. She did, for Biden.
Councilmember Kendra Brooks, a restorative justice trainer and

parent: "Police do not make schools feel safer.
They increase the likelihood that young people of color will be criminalized."
I feel that I reached peak mom reporter today when the Secret Service searched my bag and noted the presence of many snacks and a Lightning McQueen car, in addition to the requisite notebooks, pens and charging cables. Always prepared.
Real talk: shoutout to my 7-year-old, who sprinted across a parking lot in a wet bathing suit, post swim lesson, shouting “I’m part of the news! I have to go fast so Mom can write her story!” so, well, I could write my district budget story.
Listening to
@wxpnfm
this morning: my 4-year-old hears a mention of
@PHLschoolboard
and its meeting tonight and excitedly says “Mama, that’s your school board!” 7-year-old pipes in: “yeah, but remember the SRC?” Dangers of growing up with me as a parent covering

Of all the challenges he might have conquered, the “1,000 books before kindergarten” challenge is perhaps the pinnacle in this nerdy education reporter mama’s eyes.
“It’s time to put a stop to the looting of the working class by the owning class,” speaker Nijmie Dzurimko says. “Revolution is a project, not a moment.”
Meet my cousin Maureen, the mom who went viral for printing out 80-plus pages of

helped make it happen. On the kind of fan devotion that brings tears to your eyes:
I’m going to be doing some Phils fan stuff this weekend (!) Here at the stadium picking up my credential. This nun is trying to get tickets for this weekend, too! (She was too busy getting tickets to talk.)
Carol Mickey, 80, almost died during a dangerous pregnancy in 1968. A judge had to intervene to allow doctors to terminate her pregnancy and save her life. “And people wonder why I march - never again.”
Some kids have signs on poster board. Some have written messages on ripped-out pieces of notebook paper. Crowd swelling - definitely 1,000 kids or more converging on City Hall.

Walter Wallace Jr was under a physician’s care for mental issues and was taking lithium, lawyer Shaka Johnson says. Wallace’s brother called for an ambulance and the police arrived, Johnson says.
I can't stop thinking about Quintien, the 16-year-old victim of the Fairmount fire. He held doors for people at his

school. When a teacher's relative died from gun violence, he went to her home to comfort her. Stories of some of the lost:
A

student went to his principal for protection from bullying. Instead of offering help, she threatened to "call ICE and deport all of his family." The district has entered into a settlement in the case, vowing more training.
Negotiations while livetweeting: 4 yo - read me this book. Me: I’m working. 4 yo - please? Me: I can’t. 4 yo: fine, show Twitter my book and I’ll let you work.
Hey,
#PHLed
, I am thinking of you all today, doing the excruciating and important work of helping our kids process their trauma while processing yours. Much love.
My kids’ babysitter is off today. I have to work, my spouse is out of town. It took me about 5x longer than usual to write a story b/c my 4-year-old insisted on bringing me stuffed animals, singing loudly under my desk as I worked. Dry run for the school year: going really well!
News:

teachers DON'T have to report tomorrow, per the city, because the mediator won't have a ruling tonight. PFT confirms. More as soon as I have it.
My mobile office at the moment is outside a

Oh hey, just two

The kids of

Strawberry Mansion wish you knew the real Mansion - not the talk about a dangerous school, but the reasons they feel safe, the adults who care, the innovative things happening. Here's my look inside:
Post assignment, I'm sitting in
@FreeLibrary
branch to write my

story. Listening to a librarian help a kid, 9 or so, find just the right book, ask abt school (she's super excited to start tomorrow!) Flashback to the great Philly librarians who did the same for me as a kid!
My 8-year-old just asked me to rid the world of injustice for Christmas, and my 5-year-old said he didn’t want anyone in their 40s taking him to his swim lesson. (I am 43, my husband is 44.) So that’s how my morning is going.
Interrupting my regular

I vividly remember interviewing Nate Gordon in 2022 - a
