Crazy that the last time he was nominated Robert Downey Jr. lost the Supporting Actor Oscar to an actor from a Christopher Nolan movie and now he’s the Supporting Actor Oscar frontrunner for a Christopher Nolan movie
Only one woman of color has won Best Actress at the Oscars in 95 years.
One. In nearly a century.
This week, it’s time for the second.
It’s time for Michelle Yeoh.
Zac Efron has always been a good actor, but he is PHENOMENAL in The Iron Claw. What a tremendous physical and emotional performance that tears your heart out at the end. I hope he receives a Best Actor nomination somewhere this awards season, he deserves it.
Any Best Actress line-up without Sandra Hüller in Anatomy of a Fall is a disgrace. That is unequivocally one of the best performances of the year, and SAG dropped the ball.
Saoirse Ronan gives a spectacular, Oscar-worthy performance in The Outrun, the first great film I’ve seen at Sundance. She’s the whole show in this riveting, powerfully made drama about an alcoholic’s road to recovery after hitting rock bottom. Ronan fans, you are in for a treat.
So let me get this straight—
-Netflix bought Passing out of Sundance for 15 million
-It was given a brief theatrical release before streaming on Netflix exclusively
-It’s not on physical media
-It’s now LEAVING the service
-Netflix is increasing to $23 a month
Seriously, WTF
So every January 1st I choose an actor whose entire filmography I will watch in chronological order throughout the year. I’ve done Meryl Streep, Sean Connery, Bette Davis, Denzel Washington. For 2024, I have chosen JAMES STEWART!
If Paul Giamatti wins Best Actor at SAG next month, he’s probably going to win the Oscar. He gives amazing speeches. He’s extremely likable. He’s overdue. He gave an incredible performance in The Holdovers, a movie everybody likes or loves. This might just be Giamatti’s moment.
I think Poor Things will win big at the Oscars. It’s easily Oppenheimer’s greatest competition. It might be too out there for *some* Academy members, but it’s going to be a threat in Picture, Director, Supp Actor, and right now Emma Stone is clearly the Best Actress frontrunner.
One of the most ridiculous Oscar nomination omissions in recent years was Lupita Nyong’o for Jordan Peele’s US. Yes it’s of the horror genre, which is so difficult to break through, but that amazing dual performance is a total knockout that absolutely deserved a Best Actress nom!
Remember when Kathy Bates won an Oscar for a horror film and then just one year later Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins won Oscars for another horror film
Honestly maybe the biggest SAG shocker of all is Mark Ruffalo missing for Poor Things. That is a spectacular performance I figured actors especially would LOVE. I’m stunned.
In Killers of the Flower Moon, Robert De Niro gives his best performance since Casino. I didn’t think he would be this good again. He’s charming & likable but with a quiet, haunting menace that slowly rises up throughout the narrative. He’ll be nominated everywhere this season.
Multiple studios with nominated films complained to The Academy about allowing Messi to attend the
#Oscar
nominees luncheon event
He will not be attending the Oscars ceremony.

Watched Past Lives for the second time last night and I cried even harder at the end. It remains my favorite film of 2023, so richly observed and emotionally true. Those three performances are understated perfection, just wow. Greta Lee deserved a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
I don’t know if he can get the Oscar nomination, but I do think Zac Efron is going to make the final five in Best Actor at SAG for The Iron Claw. It feels right in my gut. It’s just too good of a performance to be ignored this awards season.
She gave the performance of the year, so why the hell not?
Should Jodie Foster have lost her second Best Actress Oscar for The Silence of the Lambs at 29 years old because she didn’t “need” two Oscars?
There’s been talk of how Lily Gladstone is making a mistake going Best Actress, she had the Oscar in the bag in Supporting, Lead is too competitive. My feeling is we should CELEBRATE actors who refuse to go the easy route and believe themselves to be the lead of their movie. Yes!
UPDATE: Cate Blanchett, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Martin Scorsese have all called Andrea Riseborough’s performance in TO LESLIE, “the greatest screen performance in the history of the cinematic medium.”
Farewell to the incredible Louis Gossett Jr., the first Black man to win the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. What a remarkable performance he gave in An Officer and a Gentleman, and what a legacy this great actor has left us.
I’m genuinely surprised Milo Machado Graner hasn’t shown up in Best Supporting Actor anywhere this season. His role in Anatomy of a Fall is complex, haunting, emotionally devastating. One of the best child performances in years.
Wow, I’ve been a little saddened by all the hate aimed at Saltburn. I watched it for a second time last night & once again fell under its spell. Those wicked twists. The gorgeous cinematography. A banger soundtrack. Rosamund Pike’s comic performance. There’s just so much to love.
Another ridiculous Oscar nomination omission of the last decade is Amy Adams for ARRIVAL. This might be her finest performance of all, such rich dramatic depth throughout, and the film’s noms in Picture, Director, and Screenplay make her absence in Actress all the more baffling.
So often the Oscar presenter and winner walk off stage barely acknowledging each other.
Not after Yeoh’s historic win. Just look at the love there ❤️❤️❤️
This is still in my eyes the best performance in recent years to not be recognized by the Academy. I know the horror genre can be treacherous ground during awards season, but if Kathy Bates could WIN for Misery, Toni Collette absolutely should've been nominated for HEREDITARY
A great performance from Killers of the Flower Moon that has stuck with me is Cara Jade Myers as Mollie’s sister, Anna. She has a fiery, charismatic power that lights up the screen. I wish she could’ve been in more of the movie.
The shocker Oscar nomination I want the most is Milo Machado Graner in Best Supporting Actor for Anatomy of a Fall. It’s one of the most impressive child performances we’ve had in YEARS, so bold and complex and emotionally devastating. Come on, Academy!
A Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination that would delight me is John Magaro in Past Lives. This is a role that could’ve gone wrong in so many ways, but it’s instead a beautifully written character warmly acted by a performer at the height of his powers.
